Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vital collection of interdisciplinary essays that illuminates the significance of Marian shrines and promises to teach scholars how to “read” them for decades to come. American Patroness: Marian Shrines and the Making of US Catholicism is a collection of twelve essays that examine the historical and contemporary roles of Marian shrines in US Catholicism. The essays in this collection use historical, ethnographic, and comparative methods to explore how Catholics have used Marian devotion to make an imprint on the physical and religious landscape of the United States. Using the dynamic malleability of Marian shrines as a starting place for studying US Catholicism, each chapter reconsiders the American religious landscape from the perspective of a single shrine to Mary and asks: What does this shrine reveal about US Catholicism and about American religion? Each of the contributors in American Patroness examines why and how Marian shrines persist in the twenty-first century and subsequently uses that examination to re-read contemporary US Catholicism. Because shrines are not neutral spaces—they reflect and shape the elastic yet strict boundaries of what counts as Catholic identity, and who controls prayer practices—the studies in this collection also shed light on the contested dynamics of these holy sites. American Patroness demonstrates that Marian shrines continue to be places where an American Catholic identity is continuously worked on, negotiations about power occur, and Marian relationships are fostered and nurtured in spaces that are simultaneously public and intimate.

Book The Life Story of Lester Sumrall

Download or read book The Life Story of Lester Sumrall written by Lester Sumrall and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For sheer entertainment, he was hard to beat. The Man of a Thousand Stories and the quick smile also stored up spiritual power form the Lord, and the result of all these characteristics was that Lester Sumrall worked to advance the gospel for a staggering 65 years. A leader. This giant of Pentecostal circles never saw himself that way, preferring to steamroll through projects God had for him. From his hilarious beginnings as a teenage preacher staring at a roomful of bemused farmers, to his final work as director of global food outreach, Sumrall lived with no regrets. This look back at his life is by turns funny, poignant, and inspiring. In this day of denominational partnership, which Sumrall would no doubt have loved, Christians of all backgrounds will enjoy the passion and power of a most remarkable life. Sumrall passed away in 1996, but not before preparing the ministry for that event. He worked to the last to feed the souls and bodies, the passions of his extraordinary life. I daily realize that I cannot fill my father's shoes, bit I find myself walking in his footsteps - sharing his love for the lost, pasturing the church he founded, leading the areas of ministry that God first entrusted him, and believing and trusting God to direct us and give us strength to complete all that He has called us to do. Let me encourage you to "arise" and continue to trust Him. Stephen Sumrall • Photo Section

Book Religious Pluralism State and Society in Asia

Download or read book Religious Pluralism State and Society in Asia written by Chiara Formichi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a critical approach to the concept of ‘religious pluralism’, this book examines the dynamics of religious co-existence in Asia as they are directly addressed by governments, or indirectly managed by groups and individuals. It looks at the quality of relations that emerge in encounters among people of different religious traditions or among people who hold different visions within the same tradition. Chapters focus in particular on the places of everyday religious diversity in Asian societies in order to explore how religious groups have confronted new situations of religious diversity. The book goes on to explore the conditions under which active religious pluralism emerges (or not) from material contexts of diversity.

  • Author : Matthew J. Milliner
  • Publisher : Fortress Press

Download or read book Mother of the Lamb written by Matthew J. Milliner and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mother of the Lamb tells the remarkable story of a Byzantine image that emerged from the losing side of the Crusades. Called the Virgin of the Passion in the East and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the West, the icon has expanded beyond its Byzantine origins to become one of the most pervasive images of our time. It boasts multiple major shrines on nearly every continent and is reflected in every epoch of art history since its origin, even making an appearance at the Olympics in 2012. Matthew Milliner first chronicles the story of the icon's creation and emergence in the immediate aftermath of the Third Crusade, whereupon the icon became a surprising emblem of defeat, its own fame expanding in inverse proportion to Christendom's political contraction. Originally born as a Christian response to the Christian violence of the Crusades, it marked the moment when Mary's ministry of suffering love truly began. Having traced the icon's origin and ubiquity, Milliner teases out the painting's theological depth, and continues the story of the icon's evolution and significance from its origins to the present day. As the story of the icon moves well beyond Byzantine art history, both temporally and thematically, it engages religion, politics, contemporary art, and feminist concerns at once. Always, though, the icon exemplifies dignity in suffering, a lesson that--through this image--Byzantium bequeathed to the wider world. Encapsulating eleven centuries of development of the mourning Mary in Byzantium, the Virgin of the Passion emerges as a commendable icon of humility, a perennial watchword signaling the perils of imagined political glory. The Virgin of the Passion, emblemizing political humility, the powerful agency of women, and the value of inter-Christian and extra-Christian concord, is an exemplary Marian image for the fledgling twenty-first century.

Book Asian Perspectives on Digital Culture

Download or read book Asian Perspectives on Digital Culture written by Sun Sun Lim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Asia, amidst its varied levels of economic development and diverse cultural traditions and political regimes, the Internet and mobile communications are increasingly used in every aspect of life. Yet the analytical frames used to understand the impact of digital media on Asia predominantly originate from the Global North, neither rooted in Asia’s rich philosophical traditions, nor reflective of the sociocultural practices of this dynamic region. This volume examines digital phenomena and its impact on Asia by drawing on specifically Asian perspectives. Contributors apply a variety of Asian theoretical frameworks including guanxi, face, qing, dharma and karma. With chapters focusing on emerging digital trends in China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan, the book presents compelling and diverse research on identity and selfhood, spirituality, social networking, corporate image, and national identity as shaped by and articulated through digital communication platforms.
