Book After the Absolute

Download or read book After the Absolute written by David Gold and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-09 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Rose was an unlikely Zen master: A rugged, plainspoken, ornery West Virginian, he scraped out a living raising goats, planting crops and painting houses. But Richard Rose had a secret: Having once vowed to "find the Truth or die trying," Rose experienced a cataclysmic spiritual awakening at age 30 that thrust him into "Everything-ness and Nothing-ness," or what he called "the Absolute." The experience left him with only one earthly desire: to do anything, for anyone, on a similar quest for Truth. David Gold was an unlikely student: An arrogant, ambitious and egotistical law-student, David Gold only agreed to meet the "enlightened hillbilly" in the hopes of showing him up. But when Rose turned the tables by seeing right through Gold and painting a devastatingly accurate picture of the fears and obsessions that ruled his life, a humbled Gold found himself hungry to know more. Thus began a remarkable 15-year adventure part spiritual odyssey, part legal thriller in which death threats, corrupt politicians, and life-threatening cancer run parallel to glimpses of the divine and extraordinary manifestations of timeless wisdom.

Book Backwoods Survival Guide

Download or read book Backwoods Survival Guide written by Jim Cobb and published by Centennial Books. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to living off the land. Even as the world seems to move faster and faster each day, many people are becoming ever more interested in self-reliance. They are spending more time outdoors, hiking and camping. They are growing and preserving their own food. Exploring self-reliance topics is how more and more people are staying grounded in a busy world. Homesteading is one area that falls under the self-reliance umbrella: This book explains how to raise chickens in your backyard, harvest rainwater and make it safe for consumption, save seeds from your garden harvest, and preserve food from one season to the next. The outdoor skills chapter discusses the basics of tracking, wild plants that have medicinal uses, and how to keep clean while in the field. DIY projects are always popular with the self-reliance audience: This chapter explains how to make a homemade waterproof oilcloth tarp from a thrift store bed sheet, how to build and use a vacucanner for food storage, and, perhaps most importantly, how to roast and brew coffee while off the grid. Survival planning is certainly part of self-reliance as well, and information on caching supplies for emergencies, how to use a bow and arrow to acquire food, and why cotton clothing is a horrible choice for outdoor pursuits are all covered in this book. For everyone who is looking for ways to be more self-sufficient, the Backwoods Survival Guide is here to help.

Book How Did Davy Die And Why Do We Care So Much

Download or read book How Did Davy Die And Why Do We Care So Much written by Dan Kilgore and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just over thirty years ago, Dan Kilgore ignited a controversy with his presidential address to the Texas State Historical Association and its subsequent publication in book form, "How Did Davy Die?" After the 1975 release of the first-ever English translation of eyewitness accounts by Mexican army officer Jose Enrique de la Pena, Kilgore had the audacity to state publicly that historical sources suggested Davy Crockett did not die on the ramparts of the Alamo, swinging the shattered remains of his rifle "Old Betsy." Rather, Kilgore asserted, Mexican forces took Crockett captive and then executed him on Santa Anna's order. Soon after the publication of "How Did Davy Die?, " the "London Daily Mail" associated Kilgore with "the murder of a myth;" he became the subject of articles in "Texas Monthly" and the "Wall Street Journal;" and some who considered his historical argument an affront to a treasured American icon delivered personal insults and threats of violence. Now, in this enlarged, commemorative edition, James E. Crisp, a professional historian and a participant in the debates over the De la Pena diary, reconsiders the heated disputation surrounding "How Did Davy Die?" and poses the intriguing follow-up question, ." . . And Why Do We Care So Much?" Crisp reviews the origins and subsequent impact of Kilgore's book, both on the historical hullabaloo and on the author. Along the way, he provides fascinating insights into methods of historical inquiry and the use--or non-use--of original source materials when seeking the truth of events that happened in past centuries. He further examines two aspects of the debate that Kilgore shied away from: the place and function of myth in culture, and the racial overtones of some of the responses to Kilgore's work.
