Book The Avicultural Magazine 1908 Vol 6 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Avicultural Magazine 1908 Vol 6 Classic Reprint written by Avicultural Society and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, 1908, Vol. 6 Once more we have come to the close of our Society's year and to the completion of another volume of our Magazine, and we think that our members may congratulate themselves that Volume VI. of the New Series is equal to any of its predecessors. Many articles of great interest and value have appeared, and we are glad to notice amongst the contributors several who have not previously written for our journal. Seven coloured plates by Mr. Herbert Goodchild, and numerous black and white plates and text figures have been published, the illustrations being on the whole quite equal, if not superior, to those which have previously appeared in this journal. In the pages of the present volume mention is made of many species of birds which have been imported alive for the first time this year; and accounts are published of the breeding in captivity of several species which had not previously been known to rear young in the United Kingdom. We are glad to be able to report that the Society is in a sound and prosperous condition, and that the membership continues to increase in a very satisfactory manner. Our best thanks are due to those members who, by their contributions to our pages or in other ways, have helped to make the present volume a success. Especially we are indebted to Dr. A. G. Butler for very kindly undertaking the Editorship, in addition to his duties as Honorary Correspondence Secretary, during the absence from England of Mr. Seth-Smith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 6: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society for the Study of Foreign and British Birds in Freedom and Captivity; Nov; 1914 to Oct; 1915 This last volume will be found quite up to the standard, both in size and quality of its contents to any of its predecessors, and it is this fact which calls for special thankfulness, for in this time of stress and anxiety, when so many of our contemporaries have had to be very much reduced, or have been forced to disappear altogether, we have been able to give our members their usual monthly magazine. How much this happy state of affairs is due to the unceasing efforts of our untiring Editor perhaps the majority of our members scarcely realize, for only those who see the actual production of a monthly magazine like ours know the continual strain and labour which it entails. Book The Avicultural Magazine Vol 1

Download or read book The Avicultural Magazine Vol 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 1: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society, November, 1894 One of our chief objects will be to endeavour to bridge over the gulf which exists between the lover of live birds and the scientific ornithologist - we believe that each has much to learn from the other. We want to infuse a little science into the bird-keeper, and to interest the cabinet ornithologist in the habits of birds. A word as to our name. It seems desirable and even necessary, to invent or acclimatize a word which shall denote "a person interested in the keeping and breeding of birds." and Aviculturist (being analogous to Horticulturist) will do perhaps as well as another. If any one will suggest a better, we shall be glad to adopt it - till then, we beg to subscribe ourselves Aviculturists. We rely for the success of the Society upon the energy of the members in inducing others to join, and in contributing to the Magazine. Those who are not prepared to write a formal article have generally met with some little facts or fancies in their avicultural experience, which will be of interest to others, and if they will note these down and send them to the Secretary, they will place the rest of the Society under an obligation. We want the benefit of the practical experience of all - we neither expect nor want literary skill. In order that the Society may be of real assistance to beginners, we have arranged to give advice to members upon all matters relating to aviculture by Post. The vexatious delay which arises when correspondents are only answered in the columns of a magazine or newspaper will thus be avoided. All letters and questions must be sent to the Secretary, and contain a stamped envelope for reply. The Secretary will forward the letters to those Members of the Committee who are best qualified to deal with the subjects to which they relate, and who are willing to undertake the task of replying to questions. For the present, questions relating to Parrots will generally be replied to by Mr. Camps or Dr. Simpson; Insectivorous Foreign Birds will be undertaken by Mr. Phillipps or Dr. Simpson; Foreign Finches, by Dr. Butler or Mr. Fillmer; and British Birds by Mr. Frostick or Mr. Swaysland. Those questions and answers which appear to be of general interest, will be published in the Magazine. Dr. Simpson regrets that he cannot undertake post mortem examinations of birds, and it is particularly requested that bodies of birds be not sent either to him or to any of the other officers of the Society. We should be glad to hear from any member willing to undertake post mortems. It has been suggested that a sale and exchange column should be opened, and we are prepared to admit advertisements of birds at the rate of 3d. for each insertion, of not more than two lines. Longer advertisements will be charged in proportion. Advertisements of "wants" will be inserted free of charge. It is hoped that this arrangement will prove of mutual advantage to our members, who will thus know with whom they are dealing. We do not pretend to be exclusive, but we believe that under our rules (which have been very carefully thought out, and will be vigilantly administered), it will not be possible for any but honourable and straightforward men and women to become members of the Avicultural Society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, 1898, Vol. 4 Mr. Low obtained them in January, 1873. and he states that the native name of the species is "Burong puyu puyu." Dr. Russ informs us that since 1870, single pairs of the Chinese Quail have been occasionally imported; that it is much sought after for the bird-room, and has 011 several occasions been bred; that according to Mr. E. Berin, who indeed was the first to breed it, it is shy and timid, needs a place of retirement, one of which he provided in the form of a straw covering leaning against the back wall of the cage or bird-rooin. "At the breeding-season the male and female arc continually together, the former being gentle and watchful; both build the nest; even- disturbance is to be avoided. From the experience of this and other breeders, Dr. Russ gathers that the laying consists of from four to seven clear brownish, generally dark dotted eggs. Incubation lasts from sixteen to eighteen days. The uestling-down is yellowish, and the young acquire their full colouring when three months old. Early in the present year, a good many pairs of this Quail came into the London market, and were offered to the public at prices even lower than those noted by Dr. Russ. Two pairs were offered to me, and I was so delighted with the colouring of these quaint little things that I gladly added them to my collection. My experience has not altogether coincided with that of Mr. Berin, as I shall now show. When first introduced into a tolerably large aviary I found the Chinese Quails exceedingly nervous, so that when I entered the aviary they would fly recklessly upwards, striking their heads against the wire netting under the glass roofing and falling heavily to the earth; but 110 sooner did they perceive that my intentions were never hostile, than they contented themselves with merely running out of my way or leaping in a surprising manner to a raised bank of earth, bounded in front by a wall nearly two feet high from the sanded floor. At one end of the bank above noted, I provided a place of retirement by sticking a row of fir-twigs into the earth about six inches from the back wall: behind this partial screen the Quails often sat down during the day-time, sometimes scratching a shallow depression in the soil and dragging in a little hay and a few feathers; but at other times they settled down all together in an open corner of the aviary upon the sand, and at night they frequently went to roost in another open corner upon a cemented wall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird-Lore, 1908, Vol. 10: An Illustrated Bi-Monthly Magazine Devoted to the Study and Protection of Birds They nest from to feet or more above sea-level in Colorado, almost always within reach of the ying spray from swift brooks. The collee tions and notes of Mr. Gale indicate that in this locality their nesting dates vary from the first of May to the middle of June, the variation doubtless in part but not altogether due to differences in altitude. With nests made so snug and dry inside, why constantly sprayed moss 0n the outside should be essential to their happiness or welfare has not, so far as we are aware, been satisfactorily explained, but that it is a fact seems hardly to admit of a doubt. Mr. Stevenson, of the Hayden Survey of the western territories, reported that in one case where the nest was built beyond reach of spray the birds daily sprinkled it by ying swiftly from the water to the nest and shaking off the few drops remaining on their plumage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 2: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society for the Study of Foreign and British Birds; November, 1895, to October, 1896 I have found few birds so interesting in captivity as the family of Herons There are few birds more grace ful, or that will become so familiar with their master. Of course they are not cage - birds in the ordinary sense of the word; but anyone with a small piece of ground at the back of his house can easily keep them, and will, undoubtedly, find a fund of amusement in watching them and their habits. The size of my aviary is 15 feet by 8 feet by 6 feet high, having a pond 3 feet by 2 feet, I foot deep at one end. It is provided with two good broad perches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Avicultural Magazine, Vol. 12: Being the Journal of the Avicultural Society for the Study of British and Foreign Birds in Freedom and Captivity The year which ends with this number has been one of the most difficult of the so-called "peace" years; but the Society has come through the ordeal, and rather than look back at the trials of the past we should look forward to the future with confidence and hope, seeing the signs that are visibly pointing to a real revival of aviculture. Several large consignments of birds have come into this country in the course of the year, and the importation of foreign species is the most important factor in the support of the Society, for without birds to keep aviculture alive we can neither get contributions to our Magazine nor hope to secure new members. The difficulties of the present time have caused many aviculturists to give up their hobby and resign their membership, and unless these resignations can be made good, it will be impossible to enlarge the Magazine so long as the cost of production remains as high as it is at present. It is to be hoped, therefore, that members will do their best to induce their friends to join the Society and will send the Editors accounts of the doings of their birds, so as to help to get back to the days of a Magazine of thirty-two pages and a coloured plate.
