Book G TZ VON BERLICHINGEN Autobiography of a 16th Century German Knight

Download or read book G TZ VON BERLICHINGEN Autobiography of a 16th Century German Knight written by Gotz von Berlichingen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gotz von Berlichingen's autobiography is the first autobiography of a German knight. It was originally published between 1556 and 1562. Gotz was known for the fact that he lost his right hand in battle and had it replaced by an iron prosthesis which was so cleverly crafted that he could still use his sword with it. He is also well-known for his famous quote made to one of his enemies, "Lick (kiss) my ass." This work discusses his many feuds and battles, his participation in the peasant's war, and an invasion of France. This is the only English translation of this work.

Book The Autobiography of Sir G tz Von Berlichingen

Download or read book The Autobiography of Sir G tz Von Berlichingen written by Götz von Berlichingen and published by Antelope Hill Originals. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gottfried "Götz" von Berlichingen, the Knight of the Iron Hand, was one of the last great medieval knights of history. Born in the year 1480, Götz came of age in an era of great change, both in his native German lands and the wider world. The Reformation would fundamentally change the landscape of political power in Europe, and the ensuing wars would tear the continent apart. Yet, for a time, Götz' world remained true to its feudal history, and Götz himself participated in many feuds and conflicts. A good friend and a terrible enemy, Götz recalls how he fought and struggled in the internal politics of Germany, which pitted princes and lords against one another over land, titles, and wealth. He crosses paths (and sometimes swords) with other famous knights, esteemed princes, and, on more than one occasion, with the Holy Roman Emperor himself. Campaigning with the Imperial army abroad in France, Switzerland, and Hungary, he often survived on nothing more than his wits and his prowess in battle. His legacy as a folk hero lived on long after his death, inspiring Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to write a play based on his life, and becoming the namesake of the 17th SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Götz von Berlichingen" in the Second World War. Before his death Götz von Berlichingen wrote down his unique story in an autobiographical account of one of Europe's most notable medieval knights. Translated from the original 1567 manuscript, Antelope Hill is proud to present The Autobiography of Sir Götz von Berlichingen, available for the first time ever to the English reader. Although politics and military technology may have changed since the time of this famous knight, one thing remains the same, that honor, bravery, and loyalty count for much, even for a man of humble beginnings.

Book The 17th Waffen SS Panzergrenadier Division G tz Von Berlichingen

Download or read book The 17th Waffen SS Panzergrenadier Division G tz Von Berlichingen written by Massimiliano Afiero and published by Schiffer Military History. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 17th Waffen-SS Panzergrenadier Division "Gtz von Berlichingen" was one of the few SS formations to be employed exclusively on the western front during World War II. From the time of its formation in France in 1943, "Gtz von Berlichingen" saw bitter and bloody fighting in Normandy, the Seine front, Metz, the Saar, the Palatinate, and later the defense of the west wall until the final battles in Germany. Despite the overwhelming superiority of Allied forces, the units that comprised the division always managed to offer dogged resistance, counterattacking ferociously, and defending every foot of ground with great courage and determination. The units of "Gtz von Berlichingen" received praise, not only from the German high command, but also earned the respect of its Allied adversaries. In addition, the "Gtz von Berlichingen" division was never involved in any war crimes, or in crimes against civilians. Detailed operational history, rare combat images, maps, and personality profiles make this book the definitive history of "Gtz von Berlichingen."

Book excerpt: For millennia, war was viewed as a supreme test. In the period 1750-1850 war became much more than a test: it became a secular revelation. This new understanding of war as revelation completely transformed Western war culture, revolutionizing politics, the personal experience of war, the status of common soldiers, and the tenets of military theory.

Book The Metamorphosis of Plants

Download or read book The Metamorphosis of Plants written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009-09-11 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goethe's influential text, newly illustrated with stunning color photographs. The Metamorphosis of Plants, published in 1790, was Goethe's first major attempt to describe what he called in a letter to a friend “the truth about the how of the organism.” Inspired by the diversity of flora he found on a journey to Italy, Goethe sought a unity of form in diverse structures. He came to see in the leaf the germ of a plant's metamorphosis—“the true Proteus who can hide or reveal himself in all vegetal forms”—from the root and stem leaves to the calyx and corolla, to pistil and stamens. With this short book—123 numbered paragraphs, in the manner of the great botanist Linnaeus—Goethe aimed to tell the story of botanical forms in process, to present, in effect, a motion picture of the metamorphosis of plants. This MIT Press edition of The Metamorphosis of Plants illustrates Goethe's text (in an English translation by Douglas Miller) with a series of stunning and starkly beautiful color photographs as well as numerous line drawings. It is the most completely and colorfully illustrated edition of Goethe's book ever published. It demonstrates vividly Goethe's ideas of transformation and interdependence, as well as the systematic use of imagination in scientific research—which influenced thinkers ranging from Darwin to Thoreau and has much to teach us today about our relationship with nature.

Book Land and Lordship

  • Author : Otto Brunner
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2015-07-28
  • ISBN : 1512801062
  • Pages : 490 pages

Download or read book Land and Lordship written by Otto Brunner and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otto Brunner contends that prevailing notions of medieval social and constitutional history had been shaped by the nineteenth-century nation state and its "liberal" order. Whereas a sharp distinction between the public and the private might be appropriate to descriptions of contemporary society, such a dichotomy could not be projected back onto the Middle Ages. Focusing particularly on forms of lordship in late medieval Austria, Brunner found neither a "state" in the modern sense nor any distinction between the public and private spheres. Behind the apparent disorder of late medieval political life, however, Brunner discovered a coherent legal and constitutional order rooted in the the rights and obligations of noble lordship. In carefully reconstructing this order, Brunner's study weaves together social, legal, constitutional, and intellectual history.
