Book The Old Tradition and the New Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Tradition and the New Classic Reprint written by Willis Judson Beecher and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Tradition and the New In a publication of the year 1902 may be found the four paragraphs, defining the issues at stake between the older orthodoxy and the type of Higher Criticism now currently denominated the Modern View. I do not name the author because I prefer to treat the publication as representative rather than personal. The ability displayed in it entitles it to be so treated. Many statements of like character have appeared; this is one of particular excellence, chosen from among the many. "And what are these two methods? That of the Higher Criticism is - that the Bible shall be interpreted by a devout study of its various parts with all the light that can be thrown upon it from all sources. Its concrete purpose is to ascertain its full and exact history. It has no theory of inspiration; it simply investigates, and reports what it finds. "The method of the other side is based on an unquestioning assent to the Bible as a miraculously inspired book, every word literally true, every event historical, without myth or legend - infallible - the whole being the product of the direct inspiration of God and therefore equally authoritative in all its parts. Such and so unlike are the two methods." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Media and Religious Authority

Download or read book The Media and Religious Authority written by Stewart M. Hoover and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the availability and use of media platforms continue to expand, the cultural visibility of religion is on the rise, leading to questions about religious authority: Where does it come from? How is it established? What might be changing it? The contributors to The Media and Religious Authority examine the ways in which new centers of power and influence are emerging as religions seek to “brand” themselves in the media age. Putting their in-depth, incisive studies of particular instances of media production and reception in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and North America into conversation with one another, the volume explores how evolving mediations of religion in various places affect the prospects, aspirations, and durability of religious authority across the globe. An insightful combination of theoretical groundwork and individual case studies, The Media and Religious Authority invites us to rethink the relationships among the media, religion, and culture. The contributors are Karina Kosicki Bellotti, Alexandra Boutros, Pauline Hope Cheong, Peter Horsfield, Christine Hoff Kraemer, Joonseong Lee, Alf Linderman, Bahíyyah Maroon, Montré Aza Missouri, and Emily Zeamer, with an afterword by Lynn Schofield Clark.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appeal From Tradition to Scripture and Common Sense: Or an Answer to the Question, What Constitutes the Divine Rule of Faith and Practice The Circulation of the Oxford Tracts and kindred publications, in this country, together with the progress which their doctrines have made in certain quarters, has awakened great interest among the churches. And such is the bold front Of the Pusey party, such their extra vagant assumptions, and such their lofty preten sions, that the sects, as they are scornfully deno winsted, have naturally been aroused to a new and thorough investigation of the grounds Of their faith. Much is also heard of the real or supposed secret influence excited by some leading zealots upon their devoted followers, both in the university and out of it. Reports are in circulation of secret meetings, and discussions in deep c'onclave, among the leaders and the initiated; of assem blies of a more popular character suited to the mass of disciples; of means used with great skill and discrimi nation of character to entice and entrap novices of promising talents. 1whispers, moreover, are heard of the profoundly austere exercises of the more advanced. Book Investigating Prayer

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ian Olver
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-10-11
  • ISBN : 1461445701
  • Pages : 155 pages

Download or read book Investigating Prayer written by Ian Olver and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book relates the experience of researching, planning, and conducting a scientific study into intercessory prayer (prayer for others). The purpose of the study was to ascertain whether the impact of prayer could be measured in a formal study, based on the large number of anecdotal reports of efficacy. The study was a prospectively randomized double-blind trial that added prayer by an established Christian prayer group to conventional therapy for cancer. The unique design feature was that the primary endpoint was a change in a validated scale of spiritual well-being. The patients were informed that they were participating in a study about spiritual well-being and quality of life but remained blinded to the intervention. The initial observation from the baseline data was that spiritual well-being made a unique contribution to quality of life. The final outcome of the study was that there was a statistically significant difference in spiritual well-being favoring the prayer group. The background includes a fascinating review of the medical literature on the topic, which contains positive and negative studies that each attracts a vigorous debate about methodology, endpoints, and whether metaphysical phenomena can or should be studied using scientific methodology. The complementary and alternative medicine literature is also equivocal as to whether prayer, arguably the most common complementary medical therapy, should be included in the range of interventions grouped under that heading. In addition to reporting the background and results of the study, the book explores the reactions of a range of individuals to the trial, all of which help reflect on the nature of prayer.
