Book The Auchenorrhyncha of Central Europe Die Zikaden Mitteleuropas Volume 1 Fulgoromorpha Cicadomorpha excl Cicadellidae

Download or read book The Auchenorrhyncha of Central Europe Die Zikaden Mitteleuropas Volume 1 Fulgoromorpha Cicadomorpha excl Cicadellidae written by Werner E. Holzinger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume in the bi-lingual handbook The Auchenorrhyncha of Central Europe / Die Zikaden Mitteleuropas (to be published in 3 volumes) is an essential and highly valuable addition to the literature available in this field since the last keys published date from 1935 (Haupt) and 1896 (Melichar) respectively. These insects are a very important group: in grassland ecosystems they are one of the most abundant and diverse groups. They are collected in enormous numbers in every entomo-ecological project and are also important from a phytopathological point of view, since many species are virus vectors and/or damage crops as well as various herbs and ornamental trees and shrubs. Simple keys allow an easy identification to the 250 species treated from Central Europe, Northern Europe and the UK. More than 250 drawings as well as 250 distribution maps are included. Almost all species are figured in (700) colour photographs. In addition, information on taxonomy, host plants, habitats, phenology, distribution and economic importance are given. Planthoppers and leafhoppers are among the most abundant and diverse taxa in terrestrial ecosystems. Therefore, this first volume of the handbook will be a very important reference tool, not only for entomologists but for everyone working in the fields of ecology, applied zoology and nature conservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hemiptera (true bugs, cicadas, leafhoppers, planthoppers, aphids, scale insects, psyllids) are among the most numerous and diverse in morphology, biology, ecology and behavior insect groups, with vital ecosystems. Many of them are important in the base of the food chain. Others have economic significance as pests on fruit trees, vines, greenhouse crops and other agrocoenoses. Invasive alien species are the second most important cause of biodiversity loss in Europe and many of them belong to Hemiptera. This special issue of ZooKeys includes a collection of 26 papers presented during the 6th European Hemiptera Congress, which was held at Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria from 25th to 29th June 2012. Leading Hemiptera experts from 26 countries in four continents took part at the congress. The discussions were focused on general aspects of Hemiptera studies treating faunistics and biogeography of the Mediterranean Basin and Europe more generally as well as on taxonomy and phylogeny of Cicadomorpha, Fulgoromorpha, Heteroptera, Aphidoidea and Psylloidea; complex application of ecological, acoustic, genetic, palaeontological and behavioral methods; applied research and pest control. This special issue will be of great value for anyone interested in the biology of Hemiptera in general and of certain groups in particular, stimulating future research on this interesting group of insects.

Book Catalogue of the Cicadoidea Hemiptera Auchenorrhyncha

Download or read book Catalogue of the Cicadoidea Hemiptera Auchenorrhyncha written by Allen F. Sanborn and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third in a series of catalogs and bibliographies of the Cicadoidea covering 1981-2010. The work summarizes the cicada literature, providing a means for easy access to information previously published on a particular species or to allow researchers the ability to locate similar work that has been published on other species. A total of 2,591 references are included in the bibliography. The book is a source of biological and systematic information that could be used by zoologists, entomologists, individuals interested in crop protection, and students studying entomology as well as anyone interested in cicadas or who require specific information on the insects. Each genus/species is identified with the reference, the page number, any figures (if applicable), the topics covered by the reference, any synonymies, and any biogeographic information mentioned for the species in the individual reference. An added benefit to the catalog is that it is the first complete species list for the Cicadoidea, including all synonymies and new combinations through 2012. Provides nearly four times the number of references of the previous catalog, demonstrating the explosion of data since that time Contains all references found that mention a genus or species name in the work Includes more than 300 additional references that were not in the two previous works on this subject Features the first complete species list for the Cicadoidea, including all synonymies

Book Studying Vibrational Communication

Download or read book Studying Vibrational Communication written by Reginald B. Cocroft and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explains the key ideas, questions and methods involved in studying the hidden world of vibrational communication in animals. The authors dispel the notion that this form of communication is difficult to study and show how vibrational signaling is a key to social interactions in species that live in contact with a substrate, whether it be a grassy lawn, a rippling stream or a tropical forest canopy. This ancient and widespread form of social exchange is also remarkably understudied. A frontier in animal behavior, it offers unparalleled opportunities for discovery and for addressing general questions in communication and social evolution. In addition to reviews of advances made in the study of several animal taxa, this volume also explores topics such as vibrational communication networks, the interaction of acoustic and vibrational communication, the history of the field, the evolution of signal production and reception and establishing a common vocabulary.

Book Insect Diversity Conservation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael J. Samways
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2005-01-20
  • ISBN : 0521783380
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Insect Diversity Conservation written by Michael J. Samways and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-20 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book is a contemporary global synthesis of the rapidly developing and important field of insect conservation biology. Insects play important roles in terrestrial ecological processes and in maintaining the world as we know it. They present particular conservation challenges, especially as a quarter face extinction within the next few decades. This textbook addresses the ethical foundation of insect conservation, and asks why should we concern ourselves with conservation of a butterfly, beetle or bug? The success of insects and their diversity, which have survived glaciers, is now facing a more formidable obstacle: the meteoric impact of humans. After addressing threats, from invasive alien plants to climate change, the book explores ways insects and their habitats are prioritised, mapped, monitored and conserved. Landscape and species approaches are considered. This book is for undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers and managers in conservation biology or entomology, and the wider biological and environmental sciences.

Book Field Crop Arthropod Pests of Economic Importance

Download or read book Field Crop Arthropod Pests of Economic Importance written by Peter A. Edde and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-08-21 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Crop Arthropod Pests of Economic Importance presents detailed descriptions of the biology and ecology of important arthropod pest of selected global field crops. Standard management options for insect pest control on crops include biological, non-chemical, and chemical approaches. However, because agricultural crops face a wide range of insect pests throughout the year, it can prove difficult to find a simple solution to insect pest control in many, if not most, cropping systems. A whole-farm or integrated pest management approach combines cultural, natural, and chemical controls to maintain insect pest populations below levels that cause economic damage to the crop. This practice requires accurate species identification and thorough knowledge of the biology and ecology of the target organism. Integration and effective use of various control components is often enhanced when the target organism is correctly identified, and its biology and ecology are known. This book provides a key resource toward that identification and understanding. Students and professionals in agronomy, insect detection and survey, and economic entomology will find the book a valuable learning aid and resource tool. - Includes insect synonyms, common names, and geographic distribution - Provides information on natural enemies - Is thoroughly referenced for future research
