Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, situated high in the Chilean desert, is the largest ground-based telescope on Earth. This is an insiders' account of how this complex mega-project came to fruition from authors with intimate knowledge of its past and present. The separate roots of ALMA in the United States, Europe, and Japan are traced to their merger into an international partnership involving more than 20 countries. The book relates the search for a suitable telescope site, challenges encountered in organization, funding, and construction, and lessons learned along the way. It closes with a review of the most significant results from ALMA, now one of the most productive telescopes in the world. Written for a broad spectrum of readers, including astronomers, engineers, project managers, science historians, government officials, and the general public, the eBook edition is available to download as an Open Access publication on Cambridge Core.

Book Problem Solving by Scientists and Engineers

Download or read book Problem Solving by Scientists and Engineers written by Fernando Sanchez and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation asks the following research question: Which boundary spanning mechanisms affect the effective solution of problems under different organizational contexts? I draw upon problem solving and boundary spanning mechanisms literature to shed light on how communities of knowledge cope with a stream of variable and unpredictable problems under different environments. To empirically answer the research question, I focus on the conception and construction of ALMA - the "Atacama Large Millimeter Array", which is the world's largest, most expensive and most sensitive radio telescope array operating at millimeter wavelengths. I rely upon primary data based on interviews and the digital archive of entries in the knowledge-management software used by ALMA personnel to seek out and share knowledge to solve problems. I add to our understanding about how scientists and engineers employ different mechanisms to transfer and create knowledge to solve heterogeneous problems as they emerge.

Book The Emergence of Astrophysics in Asia

Download or read book The Emergence of Astrophysics in Asia written by Tsuko Nakamura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the ways in which attitudes toward astronomy in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan, Thailand and Uzbekistan have changed with the times. The emergence of astrophysics was a worldwide phenomenon during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and it gradually replaced the older-style positional astronomy, which focused on locating and measuring the movements of the planets, stars, etc.. Here you will find national overviews that are at times followed by case studies of individual notable achievements. Although the emphasis is on the developments that occurred around 1900, later pioneering efforts in Australian, Chinese, Indian and Japanese radio astronomy are also included. As the first book ever published on the early development of astrophysics in Asia, the authors fill a chronological and technological void. Though others have already written about earlier astronomical developments in Asia, and about the recent history of astronomy in various Asian nations, no one has examined the emergence of astrophysics, the so-called ‘new astronomy’ in Asia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
