Download or read book The Astrologer written by James Parris and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the darkest days of the Second World War, with Europe falling under German occupation and Britain facing invasion, a 36-year-old refugee from the Nazis, Louis de Wohl, made a curious offer to British Intelligence. Based on the widely-held belief that Hitler's every action was guided by his horoscope, de Wohl claimed he could reveal precisely what advice the Fuhrer's astrologers were giving him. Rather than being dismissed out of hand as a crank, Churchill could see de Wohl's worth for himself. He was subsequently made an army captain and quartered in the Grosvenor House Hotel, from where he passed detailed astrological readings to the War Office and Naval Intelligence, before being transferred to work for the SOE in the United States. Was it possible that senior military and naval intelligence officers could take the ancient and arcane practice of astrology seriously? And was de Wohl genuine or merely a charlatan? In The Astrologer, author James Parris examines the evidence, including recently released files, and reaches remarkable conclusions about this bizarre aspect of the war.

Book The Astrologer s Magazine 1895 Vol 5

Download or read book The Astrologer s Magazine 1895 Vol 5 written by Alan Leo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For six shillings and six pence, Victorians could peruse The Astrologer's Magazine, Vol. 5, a periodical solely dedicated to astral science. You are unlikely to find this magazine in libraries or archives because it was not considered a proper science. This is another example of the extremely valuable role played by Forgotten Books, because you can only find something like this online. The Astrologer's Magazine was the first periodical devoted only to astrological science. This volume collects several of the first issues. It begins with an article charting the stars of Prince Edward VIII, who was born on June 23, 1894. The young Prince, later King and then Duke of Windsor, was the great-grandson of still-reigning Queen Victoria. History buffs will love the prognostications for the Prince, which include the prediction that "the chief planets of the fixed signs show little or no control over the impulses, which are strong, due to Mars being in square to the Sun." Call it the Sun - or Wallis Simpson - but on this point the stars were correct: Edward abdicated the throne because of his uncontrollable love for the American divorcee. An essay by Alan Leo presents case studies of failed marriages. Leo was the founder of modern astrology, the founder of The Astrologer's Magazine, Vol. 5, and a great proselytizer for the art and science of the heavens. Leo is more responsible for the 20th Century's astrological revival than any other practitioner. This issue also marked the debut of "Alan's Page," which was devoted to Leo's wisdom. One of Leo's goals was to reintroduce astrology to the masses. This is illustrated by a fascinating piece about palmistry which explains the practice to both astrologers and the public. Likewise, the many letters to the editor are from both laypersons and astrologists, which gives varying perspectives for the reader to consider. There are many notes throughout the volume that relate to current events, even those involving nations, and the way they were said to be influenced by the stars. With the modern focus on horoscopes, this is a forgotten aspect of astrology. With its emphasis on history, personal relationships, The Astrologer's Magazine, Vol. 5 can be an absorbing read. The Astrologer's Magazine, Vol. 5 will please readers who are interested in the astral sciences, those who are experienced astrology as well people who are just interested in browsing through something new.
