Book The Assembly Praise Book Hymns and Tunes for General Use with Responsive Readings from the Psalms Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Assembly Praise Book Hymns and Tunes for General Use with Responsive Readings from the Psalms Classic Reprint written by Leo Rich Lewis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Assembly Praise-Book: Hymns and Tunes for General Use With Responsive Readings From the Psalms The nucleus of this collection was a group of perhaps twenty hymns gathered from various American and British sources. Be tween 1885 and 1905, the senior Editor assisted in the making of several hymnals, and therefore had occasion to examine many collee tions. From time to time, as an admirable new hymn or tune was found, it was laid aside for future use. When the need of a distinctly non-sectarian hymnal seemed to be manifesting itself, the junior Editor undertook to examine care fully the standard American collections used in church and school. About five hundred candidates were thus gathered. Then began a series of winnowings. At each stage in the process of selection, competent advisers and helpers gave hearty co-operation. When the final and severest tests were applied, one hundred hymns remained, including not only the nucleus above mentioned, but also some patri otic songs and a few representative products of great epochs of hymn-writing. To these were added, in conformity with the judg ment of representative supervisors, certain standard hymns and tunes which are not strictly non-sectarian, but nevertheless are in well-nigh universal use. There has been no occasion to make new versions of hymns. In some cases an altered version had already supplanted the original. • Publisher : HarperChristian Resources
  • Release : 2019-04-02
  • ISBN : 0310086698

Download or read book Life Lessons from Psalms written by Max Lucado and published by HarperChristian Resources. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship is a daunting but important part of discipleship. For that reason, God gave us the Psalms... This collection of hymns and petitions was written over a span of centuries, in many different settings, by kings such as David and Solomon and commoners like Asaph, Heman, and the sons of Korah. Some of the psalms are defiant; others are reverent. Some are meant to be sung; others are to be prayed. Some are intensely personal; others are communal. But all have one purpose—to help us express our hears to God. As you read, study, journal, and discuss the book of Psalms, watch for these key themes that Max will unpack throughout the book: God is worthy of all worship. God will defend his people against their enemies. Being in relationship with God is the key to all joy and security. The Life Lessons with Max Lucado series brings the Bible to life in twelve lessons filled with intriguing questions, inspirational stories, and poignant reflections to take you deeper into God's Word. Each lesson includes: An opening reflection on the Bible book you're studying. Background information to deepen your understanding of the cultural and historical setting. An excerpt of the text (from the NIV and the NKJV). Exploration questions with plenty of room to write your own thoughts and notes. Inspirational thoughts from Max as well as a closing takeaway for further reflection. The Life Lessons series is ideal for use in both a small-group setting or for individual study.

Book The Assembly

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gordon W. Lathrop
  • Publisher : Fortress Press
  • Release : 2022-05-17
  • ISBN : 1506478824
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book The Assembly written by Gordon W. Lathrop and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his previous book, The Pastor: A Spirituality, Gordon W. Lathrop writes: "The most important symbol of Christ in the room is not the minister, not the altar, not even the bread and wine or the water of the font. It is the assembly, the Body of Christ, as the New Testament says" (page 27). This statement forms the central theme of this new book. Reflecting on the recent painful time of pandemic, when the wisest and most caring course was not to assemble at all, has illuminated the author's conviction and strengthened it. But as churches return to in-person worship and life in community, they will need to revisit formation in assembly practice. This book articulates why and how the assembly is so important in Christianity. Lathrop intends the book to assist Christian congregations and their pastors or priests to recover vital, participatory, and life-giving in-person worship after the pandemic. He further intends that participants will see and treasure the importance of assembly as the primary form of "church" and as a vital source of Christian daily life. Part 1 of the book looks in depth at the assembly, discusses why the sacraments are assembly events, and explores how the assembly forms Christians for daily living. Part 2 presents a critical catechism for the assembly, with emphasis on the sacraments, the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments.
