Book Asia and Europe Global Governance as a Challenge to Co operation

Download or read book Asia and Europe Global Governance as a Challenge to Co operation written by William Wallace and published by Japan Center for International Exchange. This book was released on 2004-07 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the cold war and the terrorist attacks of 9/11 have brought about profound changes in international politics. A new system of global governance —one that is better suited for the new political realities —is desperately needed. Global governance is defined here as a structure for consultation and cooperation among states to maintain global order, to contain disorder, to promote global prosperity through shared management of an open world economy, and to address the difficult issues of global equity, rights, and justice. This Council for Asia-Europe Cooperation (CAEC) book attempts to redefine the roles of Asia and Europe in a changed world. The authors analyze the ways cooperation could enhance global governance —through future multilateralism and international institutions, international economic and financial institutions, trade and development, and new security challenges.

Book ASIAN Countries Strategies towards the European Union in an Inter regionalist Context

Download or read book ASIAN Countries Strategies towards the European Union in an Inter regionalist Context written by Wai Ting、Michito Tsuruoka、Si Hong Kim等 and published by 國立臺灣大學出版中心. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on Asian countries’ strategies towards the EU. Since the introduction of Common Foreign and Security Policy in 1993 and the publication of the EU’s first strategic document on Asia one year later, hundreds of books and journal articles have been dedicated to the study of the EU policies towards Asia as a whole, or to individual Asian countries. However, very few of these researchers ever intended to explore the strategies of Asian countries, and Asian leaders’ mindsets, vis-à-vis the EU. Quite often, the policies of Asian countries towards the EU were simply interpreted as responses to the EU’s actions in Asia. Having been passive players for decades, Asian countries are now increasingly willing to participate in the formulation of regional and global orders, for which they need to articulate their own strategies and the world needs to better understand their mindsets. In the past two years, in the framework of EU Centres in Asia-Pacific, some top Asian scholars on EU-Asian relations were brought together to debate the strategies of individual Asian countries towards the EU, and evaluate the EU’s actions in the region. In their eyes, the EU was interpreted as a normative power, a security player, a civilian promoter and a health-care supplier. Together, they aimed to establish some common rules for explaining Asian countries’ strategies towards the EU after in-depth study of the actions of individual countries in their bilateral relations with the EU. This book is therefore indispensable to any efforts to understand Asian leaders’ mindset in the EU-Asian relations and their strategies towards the EU in the twenty-first century.

Book Power Transition and International Order in Asia

Download or read book Power Transition and International Order in Asia written by Peter Shearman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-23 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume examines how the transition and diffusion of power in global politics is impacting on stability and order in Asia. Both in the academic field of International Relations (IR) and among policymakers, the big question today concerns the rise of China, the relative decline of the United States, and the increasing importance of Asia in global politics. The level of impact the international power transition will have in the region remains unclear, but observers agree that Asia is a potential tinderbox for crises and conflict. This volume brings together leading scholars from around the world to assess current thinking in IR on these issues. The authors apply appropriate theories and methods of analysis in their specific area of expertise to examine the likely effects of the changing global power distribution on Asia. There is also said to be an ongoing diffusion of power away from states to non-state actors in the region; hence, in addition to examining changing relations between the Great Powers, the book will also assess the implications that other actors, from terrorist groups, insurgents and organised crime syndicates, could have on stability and order. This book will be of much interest to students of Asian politics, security studies, diplomacy and international relations.

And what does the future hold for the economic, political, and cultural policies between these two powerful regions? This book explores the relationship between European and emerging Asian economies, as globalization changes the international economic and political landscape. Reflecting on past interactions and possibilities for the future, the book brings together Asian and European perspectives from former politicians, diplomats, and academic experts to examine questions around trade and security, rights and climate change, identity clashes, and the colonial legacy. Book excerpt: The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) is an inter-governmental, not-for-profit organisation that promotes understanding and interactions between Asia and Europe. In 2022-2023, ASEF is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. The past 25 years have been an extraordinary opportunity to bring Asia and Europe closer. The next 25 years could be more challenging; in a fragmenting world, it could also mean a bigger role for ASEF given its bridging capabilities and its reputation as an honest broker. As the only permanent institution of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), the future of ASEF is inextricably linked to ASEM. How would Asia-Europe Cooperation look like 25 years from now? What are the driving forces? What do Asians and Europeans stand to gain or lose? What is at stake? What is your vision for ASEM’s destination? Voices from Asians and Europeans on The Future of Asia-Europe Cooperation: An Essay Competition Commemorating ASEF’s 25th Anniversary collects 68 essays from Asians and Europeans that elaborate on this topic, seeking to answer these questions and present the hopes for the future of Asia-Europe cooperation.
