Book excerpt: The Digha Nikaya or the collection of long doctrinary lectures of the Buddha is one of the five Nikayas or collections belonging to the Suttapitaka or the basket of (Buddha`s) discourses which is one of the three majorr collections of Pali Buddhist texts, the other two being Vinayapitaka and Abhidhammapitaka. It consists of 34 long suttas of which each individual one treats intensively some particular point or points of the doctrine. The Buddha, like other Indian teachers of his time, taught by conversation. He followed the literary habit of his time by embodying his doctrine in set phrases, sutras, on which he enlarged on different occasiions in different ways. When the Buddha died these sayings (suttas) were collected together by his disciples into the great Nikayas of which the present one is the first.

Book The Saga of the Aryan Race

Download or read book The Saga of the Aryan Race written by Porus Homi Havewala and published by Arktos. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saga of the Aryan Race is a historical epic about the origins of the Aryan people. The Saga chronicles the ancient Indo-Europeans of twenty thousand years ago, who proudly called themselves the Aryans - the Noble Ones. They were the first worshippers of Ahura Mazda, the name of God in the ancient Aryan tongue of Avestan. The Saga is a work of historical fiction based on Zoroastrian scriptures. Volumes I and II speak of the early days of the Aryans in the ancestral homeland Airyane Vaejahi, the seedland of the Aryans, and the great migrations to Iran, land of the Aryans. Volumes III, IV and V carry on with the childhood and youth of the first Aryan prophet, Asho Zarathustra, his revelations from the Creator Ahura Mazda and his divine mission to rejuvenate the ancient religion in Iran. Ancient Avestan words and concepts from sacred texts such as the Gathas, Vendidad, and Yashts, are woven into the story in a way that makes these lofty ideals easy to understand. This is a wonderful legend from the time of the Aryan ancestors that is little known in the Western world. The author, Porus Homi Havewala, born in India, is descended from the Aryan forefathers who settled in Iran. A group of Aryans, known as Parsi Zoroastrians, migrated to India after the Arab conquest of Iran in order to preserve their ancient Aryan religion. The aim of the author in writing this book is to inspire his fellow Aryan Zoroastrians, especially the young, with faith and righteous pride in their religion, like their Aryan ancestors in ancient times, as well as to educate others about the remarkable history and beliefs of the Aryan peoples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kalachakra, or "Wheel of Time," is one of the most profound and sublime of the Buddhist tantric systems. It is an intricate interweaving of astrology, eschatology, physiology, and yoga into a meditational path system that embraces the entire material universe and leads to complete, perfect enlightenment. The Kalachakra, with its special connection to the land of Shambhala and a future golden age of Dharma, has a special appeal for people of all levels of learning and practice. Initiation into its practices traditionally have been large public events, especially when granted by the Dalai Lama. Initiation into the Kalachakra Tantra has been given with increasing frequency in recent years, but information on this complex system and practice remains sparse. The Wheel of Time attempts in part to fill the gap. The book opens with a Foreword by His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama. Then the five articles discuss, respectively, the Buddhist background, history, initiation rites, generation stage sadhana, and completion stage practices of the Kalachakra Tantra.

Book W E B Du Bois International Thought

Download or read book W E B Du Bois International Thought written by W. E. B. Du Bois and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. E. B. Du Bois was one of the most significant American political thinkers of the twentieth century. This volume collects 24 of his essays and speeches on international themes, spanning the years 1900-1956. These key texts reveal Du Bois's distinctive approach to the problem of empire and demonstrate his continued importance in our current global context. The volume charts the development of Du Bois's anti-imperial thought, drawing attention to his persistent concern with the relationship between democracy and empire and illustrating the divergent inflections of this theme in the context of a shifting geopolitical terrain; unprecedented political crises, especially during the two world wars; and new opportunities for transnational solidarity. With a critical introduction and extensive editorial notes, W.E.B. Du Bois: International Thought conveys both the coherence and continuity of Du Bois's international thought across his long life and the tremendous range and variety of his preoccupations, intellectual sources, and interlocutors.

Book Imperfect Solidarities

Download or read book Imperfect Solidarities written by Madhumita Lahiri and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, activists confronting racism and colonialism—in India, South Africa, and Black America—used print media to connect with one another. Then, as now, the most effective medium for their undertakings was the English language. Imperfect Solidarities: Tagore, Gandhi, Du Bois, and the Global Anglophone tells the story of this interconnected Anglophone world. Through Rabindranath Tagore’s writings on China, Mahatma Gandhi’s recollections of South Africa, and W. E. B. Du Bois’s invocations of India, Madhumita Lahiri theorizes print internationalism. This methodology requires new terms within the worldwide hegemony of the English language (“the global Anglophone”) in order to encourage alternate geographies (such as the Global South) and new collectivities (such as people of color). The women of print internationalism feature prominently in this account. Sonja Schlesin, born in Moscow, worked with Indians in South Africa. Sister Nivedita, an Irish woman in India, collaborated with a Japanese historian. Jessie Redmon Fauset, an African American, brought the world home to young readers through her work as an author and editor. Reading across races and regions, genres and genders, Imperfect Solidarities demonstrates the utility of the neologism for postcolonial literary studies.
