This book was released on 2011-03-28 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report acknowledges that cuts in public spending will have a major impact on arts and heritage organisations, and some may well be forced to close. However, the report also notes that over recent years the arts have enjoyed a period of high levels of public investment and criticises the Arts Council in particular for wasting money on some projects. In particular the case of the Public gallery in West Bromwich, which the Committee considers a gross waste of public money by the Arts Council, is highlighted. The Committee realises the impact that cuts in public spending will have however they feel it is right that all sectors share the burden. This report suggests ways in which arts and heritage organisations might improve financial management and explore other funding schemes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1938, and as a third edition in 1974, this volume presents the results of original research into the economic aspects of the transition from the medieval manuscript to the modern printed book. It discusses the problems of supply of materials and labour created by the introduction of machinery and the growth of the literary market. The social evolution of the printing crafts is portrayed, focussing first upon the Stationers’ Company and later upon the trade union. The book traces the development of the author-printer-publisher relationship, and its bearing on the question of copyright and reviews, inter alia the organisation and price policy of bookselling from the days of legal maximum prices to the net book agreement. The 3rd edition contains sections on Public Lending Right, paperbacks, photo-copying in its relation to publishing and the rise of international publishing. .

Download or read book Fiction and the Fiction Industry written by J. A. Sutherland and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This topical, lively and wide-ranging book examines the material conditions under which the contemporary English novel is produced and consumed. Its starting point is the general economic emergency which showed up these conditions with unusual clarity in the early 1970s. The first section of the book, 'Crisis and Change', considers the changing patterns of institutional book-purchase, inflation and novel-production, the 'Americanisation' of the British book trade, and the present state of fiction reviewing. The second section, 'State Remedies', surveys such interventions, and failed interventions, as Public Lending Right, Arts Council patronage, and university support for creative writers. The third section, 'Trends, Mainly American', selects specific areas (paperback publishing, self-publishing, book-clubs, television work) which offer pointers to significant future developments in British literary culture. Fiction and the Fiction Industry pays close attention to actual novels, combining literary criticism with its examination of the book trade.

Download or read book The Long Drive Home written by Stan Rogal and published by Insomniac Press. This book was released on 2009-11-18 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gay middle-aged hit men, a pathological interior designer, an idiot savant child and a gun-toting donut shop manager are some of the disparate characters that populate Stan Rogal's first novel. Beginning at vastly different points, geographically and emotionally, these seemingly unconnected people are woven together in the taut fabric of a story that follows the sweet sadness of the search for lost youth. The characters' paths move together gradually until they ultimately converge in an explosive showdown in a sleazy, road-side motel parking lot in Magog, Quebec. Peppered with beauty, absurdity and Rogal's typical rapid-fire dialogue, The Long Drive Home makes for a wonderfully disturbing read.
