Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arts and Crafts of India and Ceylon That the work is divided into two parts, the first concerned with Hindu and Buddhist art, the latter with the Musulman arts, is solely to facilitate an un derstanding of their historical relations and psycho logical development: I do not forget that in almost every art and craft, as also in music, there exists in Hindustan a complete and friendly fusion of the two cultures. The non-sectarian character of the styles of Indian art has indeed always been conspicuous; so that it is often only by special details that one can distinguishjain from Buddhist st pas, Buddhist from Hindu sculpture, or the Hindu from the Musulmz'm minor crafts. The one great distinction of Mughal from Hindu art is not so much racial as social; the former is an art of courts and connoisseurs, owing much to individual patronage, the latter belongs as' much to the folk as to the kings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India and Ceylon With this fact in view, I can scarcely hope that my jour ney to India will arouse any particular interest - especially as an abundance of the best literature descriptive of that wonderful country is already in existence - and I ought perhaps to apologize for asking the reader to accompany me. My personal interests as naturalist and nature's friend alo'ne prompt the journey I am about to undertake. The most earnest desire of every naturalist that has made the organic forms of life a lifelong study, is to stand face to face with the wonders of nature in the tropics; for only here, under the enhancing influence of the sun's light and heat, are developed those astonishing types of form com pared with which the flora and fauna of our temperate zone are but weak and colorless imitations. Where there aren't no Ten Commandments, an' a man can raise a thirst. And not only a thirst for whiskey, but a fiery, demon-like thirst for long nights of reveling after the scorching days; a thirst for that thrilling recklessness of absolute self-abandon ment which creeps over him with the thought that Winding lanes, green fields and happy kindred are leagues and leagues away and he is unnoticed and alone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Adam's Peak to Elephanta: Sketches in Ceylon and India The spectacle of the social changes now taking place in India is one that is full of interest to anyone who has studied and taken part in the Socialistic movement at home; and the interest of it is likely to increase. For though the movement in India is not the same as that at home, it forms a curious counterpart to the latter; and being backed by economic changes which will probably persist for years to come is not likely to die out very soon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Craftsman Trained as we are to measure everything by a mechanical standard, it is difficult for us to see things clearly, to get a correct focus. We are apt to forget that our view is biassed, that we attach a disproportionate value to the productions of machinery, and that a vast number, perhaps 60 per cent., of these productions are not, as is' generally supposed, labour-saving, health-giving and serviceable to our general life and culture, but the reverse. It is questionable, said John Stuart Mill half a century ago, whether all the labour saving machinery has yet lightened the day's labour of a single human being and the years that have followed his death seem not only to have further borne out his statement, but the people themselves who are being exploited by mechanical conditions are beginning to find it out. Book The Industrial Arts of India Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Industrial Arts of India Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by George C. M. Birdwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-22 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial Arts of India, Vol. 1 of 2 Part II, on The Master Handicrafts of India, is a reprint, with added text, of a portion of my Handbook to tlze Indian Court at the Paris International Exhibition of 1878. It was so well received, both on the Continent and in this country by people interested in the minor arts of India, thati resolved to publish a carefully rewritten edition of it for general sale. I began by adding to it copious notes from the annual Administration Reports of the local governments of India; and I had examined all these reports, and all the provincial Gazetteers as yet published, when I was asked in the early part of this year to write a popular handbook on the industrial arts of India, in connexion with the reopening of the India Museum under its new administration by, the Science and Art Depart ment at South Kensington. In undertaking this task my intention was to write such a short sketch as I have given of the Hindu Pantheon, without some knowledge of which half the interest of the manual arts of India is lost and to add a few general observations on the artis tic character of Indian manufactures. But on examining the india'museum collections in detail, and finding how incomplete they were for a systematic representation of the manufacturing resources of India, I saw that what was most wanted was not a handbook to the contents of theeiuseum, but an index to its deficiencies; and I therefore resolved to virtually republish a portion of my Handbook, with new information, as the second part of the present work. Although its preparation has been hurried - (the Science and Art Department received charge ofthe Museum'only on the Ist of January lastj - I hope that it IS a fairly trustworthy index of every district and town 111 British India where manufactures of any specialartistic quality are produced; and I believe it will prove of some assistance to the oofficials of the Science and Art Department in completing the India Museum collections, and to the general public as a guide to the places in India where they may obtain objects of genuine native art.
