Book Shakespeare in the Marketplace of Words

Download or read book Shakespeare in the Marketplace of Words written by Jonathan P. Lamb and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making innovative use of digital and library archives, this book explores how Shakespeare used language to interact with the verbal marketplace of early modern England. By also combining word history with book history, Jonathan P. Lamb demonstrates Shakespeare's response to the world of words around him, in and through the formal features of his works. In chapters that focus on particular rhetorical features in Richard II, The Merchant of Venice, As You Like It, Hamlet, and Troilus and Cressida, Lamb argues that we can best understand Shakespeare's writing practice by scrutinizing how the formal features of his works circulated in an economy of imaginative writing. Shakespeare's interactions with this verbal market preceded and made possible his reputation as a playwright and dramatist. He was, in his time, a great buyer and seller of words.

Book The Variety of Shakespeare s Prose

Download or read book The Variety of Shakespeare s Prose written by Volker Beckmann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 1983 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 3,0, Bielefeld University (Sprachenzentrum), course: Elizabethan English, language: English, abstract: The aim of the following paper is to take a closer look at Shakespeare’s prose from a stylistic, linguistic and rhetorical point of view. Given the fact that Shakespeare’s prose occurs both in his comedies, tragedies and histories and prose is being used in his plays by characters of different social ranks the question is to be asked which various functions prose as a medium fulfils in relationship to such other functions as setting, dialogue, action and theme. According to Brian Vickers Elizabethan audiences must have been aware of the alternation of prose and verse. It can be assumed that any deviation from the norm which was blank verse was a) felt by attentive audiences and b) had an impact on the way actors behaved on the stage. In the following essay I shall employ the critical method devised by Vickers in his book “The Artistry of Shakespeare’s Prose”. First, I shall be dealing with different forms of Shakespearean imagery. For the sake of convenience, I am making use of the categories suggested by Vickers. Second, I am trying to find examples showing those recurrent Shakespearean devices which have a determinant influence on what Vickers calls ‘the linguistic structure’. These devices include features like repartee, equivocation, comic logic; malapropism, repetition; foreign and regional English; unusual syntax; fondness for proverbs; word play and punning. Third, I shall prove that Shakespeare made frequent use of various rhetorical figures.

Book Shakespeare and the Politics of Commoners

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Politics of Commoners written by Chris Fitter and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare and the Politics of Commoners is a highly original contribution to our understanding of Shakespeare's plays. It breaks important new ground in introducing readers, lay and scholarly alike, to the existence and character of the political culture of the mass of ordinary commoners in Shakespeare's England, as revealed by the recent findings of 'the new social history'. The volume thereby helps to challenge the traditional myths of a non-political commons and a culture of obedience. It also brings together leading Shakespeareans, who digest recent social history, with eminent early modern social historians, who turn their focus on Shakespeare. This genuinely cross-disciplinary approach generates fresh readings of over ten of Shakespeare's plays and locates the impress on Shakespearean drama of popular political thought and pressure in this period of perceived crisis. The volume is unique in engaging and digesting the dramatic importance of the discoveries of the new social history, thereby resituating and revaluing Shakespeare within the social depth of politics.

Book Rematerializing Shakespeare

Download or read book Rematerializing Shakespeare written by B. Reynolds and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To 'rematerialize' in the sense of Rematerializing Shakespeare: Authority and Representation on the Early Modern English Stage is not to recover a lost material infrastructure, as Marx spoke of, nor is it to restore to some material existence its priority over the imaginary. Indeed, this collection of work by some of the most highly-regarded critics in Shakespeare studies does not offer a single theoretical stance on any of the various forms of critical materialism (Marxism, cultural materialism, new historicism, transversal poetics, gender studies, or performance criticism), but rather demonstrates that the materiality of Shakespeare is multidimensional and consists of the imagination, the intended, and the desired. Nothing returns in this rematerialization, unless it is a return in the sense of the repressed, which, when it comes back, comes back as something else. An all-star line-up of contributors includes Kate McLuskie, Terence Hawkes, Catherine Belsey and Doug Bruster.

Book excerpt: The beauty and meaning behind his poetry and prose has meant that Shakespeare's work has lived on throughout history long after his death. We still fall in love and become passionate, or jealous, or dim-witted, or melancholy, or dreamy, or vengeful, or courageous on behalf of a loved one. We still use language with outlandish imagery or moving simplicity of expression to attempt the impossible - that is, distil the essence of love into words. Shakespeare achieved this alchemy of the imagination as no other writer before or since. Here, in a beautiful volume to treasure, we offer wonderful words on love in all its moods, in verse and prose, from the poetry and the plays - with a brilliantly illuminating introduction and commentary from a Shakespeare scholar. From the star-crossed Romeo and Juliet, and the witty Benedick and Beatrice, to the broody passion of Othello and the Dark Lady of the sonnets, there is so much here to admire, enjoy and be moved by
