Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Artist Tradesman's Guide It will be most conducive to science to consider all those substances as simple, which no mode of decomposing has yet been discovered. Simple substances naturally divide them selves into two classes. Those which belong to the first class are of too subtile a nature to be confined to any vessels which we possess. They do not seriously affect the most delicate balance, and have received therefore the name Of imponder able bodies. The second class of bodies may be confined in proper vesselsvmay be exhibited in a separate state, and their weights or other properties may be determined. They have received the name ofponderable bodies. The imponderable bodies at present supposed to exist are four, light, heat or ca loric, electricity, and magnetism. The first three are inti mately connected with chemistry, but magnetism has with it no known connexion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Drawing-Book: A Manual for the Amateur, and Basis of Study for the Professional Artist; Especially Adapted to the Use of Public and Private Schools, as Well as Home Instructions A knowledge of Design, even in copying, gives great advantages. If he understands the principles upon which the original is produced, there is no fear of the workman committing offensive variations. How often do we see the most beautiful designs distorted into deformity by the variation of a single line; an error of ignorance that must continually occur, until our me chanics are better instructed in this branch of education. It is a vain hope, that a work so limited as this, will supply all the information the artisan should require; but should it lead him to make a, beginning, he will so soon find his advantage in it, that he will beinduced to pursue it farther. He will have his children and apprentices instructed; he will urge the establishment of schools and collections of models, to which they can be directed; and he will in his own time see the fruits, in the advancement of our manufactures to a degree of perfection that can never exist. Book Handbook of Drawing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Handbook of Drawing Classic Reprint written by William Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All true education consists in the cultivation of the judgment," writes William Walker in the Preface to Handbook of Drawing. With this simple statement of intent, Walker imparts lessons on drawing and lessons about the nature of art. Walker describes techniques and art together, so the reader learns not to copy, but instead to see art for him or herself, and approach that readers will surely be delighted with. The Handbook of Drawing has two aims. First, the book sets out to teach the elementary principles of drawing. Second, it seeks to impart judgement on matters involving art, so that students can develop a good eye. To teach students how to draw, Walker begins with the basics: how to see, how to hold the pencil, how sketch, how to outline and how to use shade and light. The lessons are easy to understand and are accompanied by illustrations. The second half of the book touches on the essence of what it means to be an artist. There are many beautiful passages examining how to draw an object in a more natural, artistic way. For example, after describing how to draw a leaf, Walker discusses how to make it the leaf more life-like and more beautiful. "But if a leaf is so placed as to show its varied and delicate curves in front one of another then we are no longer drawing from the flat... but from an object in space, with all the exquisite changes of curve and surface, and there is now more properly a field for Art expression." The illustrations - one of a flat leaf and one of a foreshortened, flowing leaf - expertly demonstrate Walker's advice. Handbook of Drawing discusses perspective and how technical ability differs from artistic ability. Walker repeatedly warns students against mere copying, encouraging them, instead, to find their own style. Anyone interested in drawing must have this expertly written text. Book A Pattern Language

Download or read book A Pattern Language written by Christopher Alexander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

Book Adventures in Bookbinding

Download or read book Adventures in Bookbinding written by Jeannine Stein and published by Quarry Books. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each project in this book combines bookbinding with a specific craft such as quilting, jewelry making, or polymer clay, and offer levels of expertise: basic, novice, and expert. Illustrated step-by-step instructions and photographs demonstrate how to construct the cover pages, and a unique binding technique, easy enough for a beginner to master. Each project also features two other versions with the same binding geared to those with more or less experience. The novice version is for those who have no knowledge of the craft and want shortcuts, but love the look. For the quilter's book, for example, vintage quilt pieces become the covers so all that's needing in the binding. Or if you're interested in wool felting use an old sweater. This offers great opportunities for upcycling. The expert version is for those who have a great deal of knowledge and proficiency of a certain craft - the master art quilter, for example. For this version, an expert guest artist has created the cover and the author has created the binding. This offers yet another creative opportunity - the collaborative project. Since crafters often get involved with round-robins and other shared endeavors, this will show them yet another way to combine their skills. No other craft book offers the possibilities and challenges that Adventures in Bookbinding does. Readers will return to it again and again to find inspiration and ideas.

Book Art of Coppersmithing

Download or read book Art of Coppersmithing written by John Fuller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art of Coppersmithing: A Practical Treatise on Working Sheet Copper Into All Forms And while the aspirations of my youth died away amid the busy' turmoil of mechanical life, and smoldered for years (with an occasional burst of warmth), the thoughts were still cherished, and I began without any preparation, save my memory, to give the helpless boys of the trade reliable instruction in things they should know in starting out to acquire the Art of Coppersmithing. I did my best to tell from my own experience, in the most lucid manner, that which is being called for in everyday life, in three separate branches of the copper trade, sup posing with each lesson there was a good boy at my side. I am pleased with the result of my first effort, which was in a measure impromptu. It will not, however, make Coppersmiths of any one without effort and application, but I trust it will be a help to all who have need of assist ance, and be an incentive to boys to exercise whatever talents they may possess for their own benefit and that of others less fortunate.
