Book Metamorphic Readings

Download or read book Metamorphic Readings written by Alison Sharrock and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ovid's remarkable and endlessly fascinating Metamorphoses is one of the best-known and most popular works of classical literature, exerting a pervasive influence on later European literature and culture. A vast repository of mythic material as well as a sophisticated manipulation of story-telling, the poem can be appreciated on many different levels and by audiences of very different backgrounds and educational experiences. As the poem's focus on transformation and transgression connects in many ways with contemporary culture and society, modern research perspectives have developed correspondingly. Metamorphic Readings presents the state of the art in research on this canonical Roman epic. Written in an accessible style, the essays included represent a variety of approaches, exploring the effects of transformation and the transgression of borders. The contributors investigate three main themes: transformations into the Metamorphoses (how the mythic narratives evolved), transformations in the Metamorphoses (what new understandings of the dynamics of metamorphosis might be achieved), and transformations of the Metamorphoses (how the Metamorphoses were later understood and came to acquire new meanings). The many forms of transformation exhibited by Ovid's masterpiece are explored—including the transformation of the genre of mythic narrative itself.

Book excerpt: In this book, visual and poetic emblems of God's love, created by Otto van Veen and Jeanne Guyon, symbolically represent spiritual meaning and, as such, offer a gift of revealed strength and purpose to the aware reader. In our age, when love seems almost forgotten, this emblem book uniting Guyon's poetry and D'Othon Vaenius's illustrations give us a faithful look into what might be. What if Divine love becomes part of the human endeavor and joins to human souls? Otto van Veen and Jeanne de la Mothe Guyon internalized this hope and here reveal to us their vision of the love of God bonding and becoming one with the human soul. Translated into English for the first time here, these emblems of divine love become available to postmodern readers.

Book Earth Divination Earth Magic

Download or read book Earth Divination Earth Magic written by John Michael Greer and published by Aeon Books. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a complete guide to the lost art of geomancy--one of the major divination systems that are a part of the Western magical tradition. Geomancy is simple, quick, and direct--anyone can get answers to a question in a matter of moments by learning how to read the patterns revealed by the 16 symbolic figures formed of single and double points. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, geomancy was used by everyone from popes to peasants because it provided practical, useful results. Often mistaken for feng shui or ley lines, or hidden within poorly explained tables and charts, geomancy has become something of a lost art--until now. Earth Divination, Earth Magic provides a fascinating look into the history, theory, and practice of geomancy, including a thorough set of instructions for both casting and interpreting a chart for yourself or a friend.

  • ISBN : 1594174113
  • Pages : 58 pages

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the interior insights that St. Josemaría Escrivá received in his early priestly life. Many of these insights were the fruits of his meditations on Scripture with a focus on God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as well as a the fruits of a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The author points out that we, much like St. Josemaría, can also be vessels of percipient interior insights: “Our diligent seeking and pondering can prepare our soul to receive these lights.” Themes include God’s fatherhood, the sense and strengthening of divine filiation, abandoning oneself in God’s hands, identifying with Christ through the Cross, having real friendship with Jesus Christ, and placing oneself into his wounds in order to serve others, listening to the Holy Spirit, and seeking Jesus through a strong devotion to his Blessed Mother.

Book The Practical Art of Divine Magic

Download or read book The Practical Art of Divine Magic written by Patrick Dunn and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient world of Egypt, Greece, and Rome was home to a set of magical and spiritual technologies, called theurgy, that unite the practice of magic with the aims of religion. Theurgy, or "godwork," is the art of creating a stronger bond between the theurgist and his or her deities. The results of this stronger bond were imminently practical: stronger magic, more meaningful existence, and a better life. With the fall of Rome, these techniques faded into obscurity, and many of them were lost forever. This book revives, restores, and reinvents these practices for a contemporary pagan or magical practitioner. A mixture of scholarly research and examination of source texts and daring experimentation and extrapolation leads to a complete and workable system that can inform a variety of practices, all presented in a relaxed, lighthearted, and readable way. Whether you practice witchcraft, ceremonial magic, or chaos magic, you can benefit from the practice of theurgy. You will learn techniques to create stronger bonds with divine forces, call up and communicate with spiritual beings, summon a magical assistant, create statues imbued with divine spirit, and master your own mind. The ultimate goal is union with the divine, but theurgy is a practical path, and every step on that path is designed to improve your life.

Book Art and Agency

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alfred Gell
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 0198280130
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Art and Agency written by Alfred Gell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Art and Agency, Alfred Gell formulates an anthropological theory of visual art that focuses on the social context of art production, circulation, and reception. As a theory of the nexus of social relations involving works of art, this work suggests that in certain contexts, art-objects substitute for persons and thus mediate social agency. Diversely illustrated and based on European, Polynesian, Melanesian, and Australian sources, Art and Agency was completed just before Gell's death at the age of fifty-one in January 1997. It embodies the intellectual bravura, lively wit, vigor, and erudition for which he was admired, and will stand as an enduring testament to one of the most gifted anthropologists of his generation.
