Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise by Sun Tzu, a high-ranking military general, strategist and tactician. The text is composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare. It is commonly thought of as a definitive work on military strategy and tactics. For the last two thousand years it remained the most important military treatise in Asia, where even the common people knew it by name. It has had an influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy and beyond. The book was first translated into the French language in 1772 by French Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot and a partial translation into English was attempted by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905. However, the most popular (and accurate) English language translation was completed by Lionel Giles in 1910. Leaders as diverse as Mao Zedong, General Vo Nguyen Giap, General Douglas MacArthur and leaders of Imperial Japan have drawn inspiration from the work. This edition has 380 footnotes, an introduction, and brief biographies on the 11 main commentators on Sun Tzu's work. This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket, and is limited to 100 copies.

Book excerpt: The text of Sun Tzu's treatise, of which thirteen chapters have come down to us, deals with everything that concerns the elaboration of strategy and the conduct of battles. While it presents the study of war as vital for the survival of states, it also takes into consideration the economic, moral, and political cost of war; it also sets out the criteria of evaluation that each prince and general must use to estimate the adversary and engage in combat only when he is sure of victory. Certain characteristic elements emerge, which are the autonomy of the military - the general - from the political - the prince - once the decision to fight has been taken, the fundamental importance of cunning, and the necessary practice of espionage.

Book On War 100 Copy Collector s Edition

Download or read book On War 100 Copy Collector s Edition written by Carl Von Clausewitz and published by Royal Classics. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On War is a book on military strategy by Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz, written mostly after the Napoleonic wars, between 1816 and 1830, and published posthumously in 1832. On War is one of the most important treatises on political-military analysis and strategy ever written, and remains both controversial and an influence on strategic thinking. Clausewitz was among those intrigued by the manner in which the leaders of the French Revolution, especially Napoleon, had changed the conduct of war through their ability to motivate the populace and to gain access to the full resources of the state; thus unleashing war on a greater scale than had previously been seen in Europe. Clausewitz was well educated and had strong interests in art, history, science, and education. He was a professional soldier who spent a considerable part of his life fighting against Napoleon. The insights he gained from his political and military experiences, combined with a solid grasp of European history, allowed Clausewitz to write a definitive book on military strategy. This edition contains all three volumes of On War, and includes an introduction, a biography, and annotations. This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket, and is limited to 100 copies.

Book excerpt: Twenty-Five Hundred years ago, Sun Tzu wrote this classic book of military strategy based on Chinese warfare and military thought. Since that time, all levels of military have used the teaching on Sun Tzu to warfare and civilization have adapted these teachings for use in politics, business and everyday life. The Art of War is a book which should be used to gain advantage of opponents in the boardroom and battlefield alike. Sun Tzu said: “Let your plans be dark, and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.” Written in the 6th century BC, Sun Tzu’s The Art of War is still used as a book of military strategy today. Napoleon, Mae Zedong, General Vo Nguyen Giap and General Douglas MacArthur all claimed to have drawn inspiration from it since it was first translated into French in 1782. And beyond the world of war, business and management gurus have also applied Sun Tzu’s ideas to office politics and corporate strategy. This beautifully illustrated collector’s edition is ideal for anyone who wants to outthink and outflank the competition, and its small size and hardcover make it a portable addition to any readers’ collection. With chapters on Laying Plans, Waging War, Attack by Strategem, Tactical Dispositions, Energy, Weak Points and Strong, Maneuvering, Variation in Tactics, The Army on the March, Terrain, The Nine Situations, Attack by Fire, and The Use of Spies, the book provides countless useful metaphors for nearly every modern situation in which there is innate competition. By studying The Art of War, a reader can both become educated on the strategies used in warfare for hundreds of years, and also become prepared for interactions, negotiations, and business situations of all kinds.
