Book excerpt: Randy Wix spent his early years in the fields of construction and landscaping. When you enter his studio, you cannot help but notice that instead of art brushes and canvases, you find power tools, bundles of wire, bags of concrete and other items commonly found in a carpenters workshop rather than an artist studio. His studio is his job site and he is the contractor. The source of art supplies is the local hardware store and his creative process involves a combination of engineering, construction and curation. Randy discovers objects in the world around us daily and sees them as part of his storytelling efforts as he attempts to redefine and challenge the world around us. Randy's keen eye and his deep understanding of the power of form and function drive his creative process which result in powerful works that reflect the evolution and change in our world today. The future of our past is part of his everyday conversation as he thoughtfully engineers and builds his creations.

Book The Southern Textile Basketball Tournament

Download or read book The Southern Textile Basketball Tournament written by Mac C. Kirkpatrick and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-10-18 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1905 Lawrence Peter Hollis went to Springfield, Massachusetts, before beginning his job as the secretary of the YMCA at Monaghan Mill in Greenville, South Carolina. While there, he met James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, and learned of the fledgling game. Armed with Dr. Naismith's rules of the game and a basketball he bought in New York, Hollis returned to the mill and changed the face of athletics in South Carolina. Lawrence Peter Hollis was one of the first to introduce basketball south of the Mason-Dixon line, and the game quickly gained popularity in the textile mill villages throughout South Carolina. In 1921 Hollis and others organized a tournament to determine the best mill team, and thus the southern Textile Basketball Tournament was born. Over the years, some of the south's top cage talent played in the tourney, including "Smokey" Barbare, Lucille Foster Thomas, Bert Hill, Earl Wooten, Billy Cunningham, Pete Maravich, Sue Vickers and Tree Rollins. Decade-by-decade, the history of one of the longest running basketball tournaments is provided, along with profiles of many prominent participants. Full rosters for all teams in all tournaments are given in the appendices, along with all-tournament selections and members of the Southern Textile Athletic Hall of Fame.

Book Deanna Durbin in Hollywood

Download or read book Deanna Durbin in Hollywood written by Barry Lowe and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-03-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the first film teenager, Deanna Durbin was one of the most popular actresses of the 1930s and 1940s. From starring alongside legends like Judy Garland to playing the lead role in classic film musicals, her rise to fame seemed almost like fantasy. But her life behind the scenes was anything but glamorous. Though Durbin was a princess to the public, she was a puppet to film studios and producers and a punching bag for critics and gossip columnists. At the end of her twelve-year career, her only wish was to be forgotten. Impossible. This book pays tribute to Deanna Durbin by detailing her life and career in the context of her time and appraises her film work from both a contemporaneous and a modern view. It includes a short biography, an in-depth discussion of her films, and an extensive filmography and bibliography of her work. Readers will discover the true identity behind the people's Cinderella and how Durbin's career opened Hollywood's studio gates to a generation of adolescent performers.
