Book excerpt: Based on a true story. Murder. Marriage. Mystery. It's not an easy juggling act. In May of 1903, Thomas "Anglo" Horton was the cover story for London's influential and immensely popular Magic Magazine. One year later he was dead. Then in 1907, Hamley's of London publishes The Art of Modern Juggling. It's the world's first book on the subject and Anglo is cited as the author. Not only was "Australia's Greatest Juggler" rotting away in an unmarked grave by the time the book came out, it was widely known that Horton, 24 at the time of his death, couldn't "spell a word of four letters". How does an illiterate juggler, three years gone, author a ground-breaking book about a timeless tradition? According to a local bookseller and Horton's one-time promoter, there's only one possible explanation. Only he doesn't believe in ghosts. As an appendix to this true crime novel, you will be able to read Thomas' origin book "The Art of Modern Juggling" that's included as a free bonus after the main story. On May 11, 1904, Anglo wrote the following letter to the Hamley Brothers. "Dear Messrs. Hamley: I thought that I would just drop you a line to tell you of my misfortune. Since I left London, I have had varied luck. The first thing on landing at Adelaide I was greeted with the news of my wife's death, which took place two days before. A few months after I married again, and then my troubles commenced afresh. My second marriage was in every way a complete failure. I had no idea what sort of a woman I was taking for my wife. Everything that I could do to try and live with her in happiness was futile. She so worried me that I hardly knew what I was doing. She left me after we had been married 3-1/2 months and went home to her people. Had she been satisfied and contented with leaving me, all would have been well, but unfortunately for me such was not the case. She used to carry on with other men and one Saturday night I met her in the street. I got wild and shot her dead. You may quite imagine my position then. I, of course, was put on trial and the jury brought in a verdict against me. So tomorrow, the 12th, I die. I do not think that I have any more to write about, so will thank you in anticipation and wishing you all success and a long farewell, I am, Yours Sincerely, T. Horton." Thomas Horton was hanged the next day.

  • Author : Seth D. Kunin
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2009-07-16

Download or read book Juggling Identities written by Seth D. Kunin and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juggling Identities is an extensive ethnography of the crypto-Jews who live deep within the Hispanic communities of the American Southwest. Critiquing scholars who challenge the cultural authenticity of these individuals, Seth D. Kunin builds a solid link between the crypto-Jews of New Mexico and their Spanish ancestors who secretly maintained their Jewish identity after converting to Catholicism, offering the strongest evidence yet of their ethnic and religious origins. Kunin adopts a unique approach to the lives of modern crypto-Jews, concentrating primarily on their understanding of Jewish tradition and the meaning they ascribe to ritual. He illuminates the complexity of this community, in which individuals and groups perform the same practice in diverse ways. Kunin supplements his ethnographic research with broader theories concerning the nature of identity and memory, which is especially applicable to crypto-Jews, whose culture resides mainly in memory. Kunin's work has wider implications, not only for other forms of crypto-Judaism (such as that found in the former Soviet Union) but also for the study of Judaism's fluid nature, which helps adherents adapt to new circumstances and knowledge. Kunin draws fascinating comparisons between the intricate ancestry of crypto-Jews and those of other ethnic communities living in the United States.

Book Juggling with Knives

Download or read book Juggling with Knives written by Jim Jubak and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stunning volatility is the new "fact of life" that defines our age. Financial markets fall off cliffs one day, but then stage a recovery the next, only to do it all over again. The switch back and forth is emotionally draining, making us susceptible to irrational responses that can turn manageable problems into huge personal crises. But while there is danger in volatility, there is also the opportunity to profitably juggle the knives that volatility throws your way -- with less risk than you might think. The first step toward profiting from volatility is to understand why these radical ups and downs are taking place now. Jim Jubak's deep and broad-ranging analysis looks into not only the financial but also the economic, market, and social trends, showing how they reinforce each other, including: the consequences of global central banks operating as cash machines, a financial system that will not be reformed, China as the world's largest game of three-card monte, the aging of populations around the world and the resulting war between the young and old, and the large bill we will have for the consequences of environmental externalities such as climate change and energy uncertainty. Jubak analyzes these and other trends, providing practical insights and specific investing strategies that show investors how to respect -- but not be scared of -- market volatility, and how to make smarter investment decisions to profit from and hedge against it.

Book The Ordinary Acrobat

Download or read book The Ordinary Acrobat written by Duncan Wall and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary story of a young man’s plunge into the unique and wonderful world of the circus—taking readers deep into circus history and its renaissance as a contemporary art form, and behind the (tented) walls of France’s most prestigious circus school. When Duncan Wall visited his first nouveau cirque as a college student in Paris, everything about it—the monochromatic costumes, the acrobat singing Simon and Garfunkel, the juggler reciting Proust—was captivating. Soon he was waiting outside stage doors, eagerly chatting with the stars, and attending circuses two or three nights a week. So great was his enthusiasm that a year later he applied on a whim to the training program at the École Nationale des Arts du Cirque—and was, to his surprise, accepted. Sometimes scary and often funny, The Ordinary Acrobat follows the (occasionally literal) collision of one American novice and a host of gifted international students in a rigorous regimen of tumbling, trapeze, juggling, and clowning. Along the way, Wall introduces readers to all the ambition, beauty, and thrills of the circus’s long history: from hardscrabble beginnings to Gilded Age treasures, and from twentieth-century artistic and economic struggles to its brilliant reemergence in the form of contemporary circus (most prominently through Cirque du Soleil). Readers meet figures past—the father of the circus, Philip Astley; the larger-than-life P. T. Barnum—and present, as Wall seeks lessons from innovative masters including juggler Jérôme Thomas and clown André Riot-Sarcey. As Wall learns, not everyone is destined to run away with the circus—but the institution fascinates just the same. Brimming with surprises, outsized personalities, and plenty of charm, The Ordinary Acrobat delivers all the excitement and pleasure of the circus ring itself.
