Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Living: And Other Addresses to Girls To undertake to speak of the art of living suggests a difficulty at the very outset. Ought there, in truth, to be any art in right living? Must it not be spontaneous, the mere unconscious self-expression of a beautiful nature? It is to the child, blessed with perfect health, living in an atmosphere of freedom, that we turn when we wish to see the supreme example of the art of living. We love to watch him because he is so natural, so absolutely simple, because what he expresses is himself, himself shown to us without any thought, without any self-consciousness. This is what gives him his charm of character, his grace of action. How can there be an art of living when the beauty of living seems to lie in its very absence of art? But reflection shows that childhood cannot last. Its grace, its spontaneous charm is too often followed by a period of awkwardness in mind and morals as well as in body, a condition generally spoken of as self-consciousness. So used, the epithet self-conscious is one of reproach. But in philosophical language self-consciousness is necessary to the development of character. The individual must become conscious of himself; he must realise self in his relations to things outside himself, to men, to God. He must take count of self, of his powers, of his limitations, so that he may be master of his own career, of his own inner life. This phase of human development is naturally attended by its own particular perils. It no doubt frequently leads to that unpleasant condition described in ordinary language as self-consciousness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Living Poets Such a book would not, of course, have been possible without the kindly co-operation of the poets cited, to each one of whom the Editor is greatly indebted, not only for permission to quote from his works but also for giving cam blanche in the matter of selection. Like indebtedness to the publishers of the various volumes from which the poems have been quoted is cordially acknowledged. The Editor is alone responsible for the selection of the different poems by which the various writers are repte sented. It is inevitable that a selection of the kind must in a measure represent the individual preference of the compiler, and he can only trust that his idiosyncrasies are not such as to make his collection anything but fairly representative according to the average taste of those who delight in all manifesta tions of the poetic Spirit. Book Epictetus Handbook and the Tablet of Cebes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new translation presents two works, one by Epictetus and the other by Cebes, two ancient Greek philosophers of the Imperial period, in new translations of clear, straightforward English. In this book, readers will learn how to sustain emotional harmony and a ‘good flow of life’ whatever fortune may hold in store for them. This modern English translation of the complete Handbook is supported by and includes: * the first thorough commentary since that of Simplicius, 1500 years ago * a detailed introduction * extensive glossary * index of key terms * chapter-by-chapter discussion of themes * helpful tables that clarify Stoic ethical doctrines as a glance. Accompanying the Handbook is the Tablet of Cebes, a curious and engaging text. In complete contrast, yet complementing the Handbook’s more conventional philosophical presentation, the Tablet shows progress to philosophical wisdom as a journey through a landscape inhabited by personifications of happiness, fortune, the virtues and vices.
