Book The Art of Horsemanship Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Art of Horsemanship Classic Reprint written by Xenophon Xenophon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Horsemanship Among technical treatises, that of Xeno phon on Horsemanship is almost unique in one particular. Even after more than twenty three centuries it is still, in the main, a sound and excellent guide for so much of the field as it covers. This fact, together with the simple and delightful manner in which the subject is treated, has led me to think that some who are not able or do not care to approach the book in the original Greek, might like'to read a translation of the earli est known work on the horse and how to ride him. To be sure, there have already been versions in English; but these seem to me, and have seemed to others, unsatisfactory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Horsemanship: Altered and Abbreviated, According to the Principles of the Late, Sir Sidney Medows I hope your Royal Highness will pardon me for saying, that our admiration was frequently excited by the just observations which you made at the time; and by the precision with which you gave those aids, when riding there, which is seldom attained without great practice. The gracious manner in which, after Sir Sidney's death, you were pleased to give me a horse so completely dressed by him, demands my warmest acknowledgements. Indeed it was to me a valuable present, equally unexpected and unsolicited. The proud passage on which the offspring of that horse passed his Majesty at the review of the corps of volunteer infantry, in which I serve as Major, particularly attracted his attention. Book Practical Horsemanship Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Horsemanship Classic Reprint written by W. A. Kerr and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Horsemanship England has the credit of being a nation of horsemen. To any such specialite our countrymen have no valid claim. Half an hours stroll in the Park, or a few minutes' loll over the rails by Rotten Row, will convince any capable equestrian that this popular belief is not founded on fact, but, on the contrary, is a palpable fallacy. During the London season, and out the of season, some of the worst, as well as some of the best, riding in the world is displayed. Before the Crimean War our cavalry rode very indifferently, so much so that Napoleon the Great is reported to have said that did he possess our horses, he could readily beat our men. But we have changed all that. Of hard-riding, bold-riding, and rough-riding we could always boast, but with us the manage (derived from the Latin words, manis, "the hand," and ago, "to do, or act") was never popular. A national failing is to "talk horse," but a large majority are supremely ignorant on the subject, and few and far between arc those who can be termed manus agcre, or skilful to handle. Book The Art of Horse Shoeing Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Art of Horse Shoeing Classic Reprint written by William Hunting and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Horse-Shoeing This little book is written for three classes of readers: for horse-owners who may interest themselves in the subject, for farriers who are open to conviction, and for veterinary students who have to be examined. The method pursued has been, to first describe the form and action of the foot, next the preparation of the foot for shoeing. Then the form of a shoe is treated of and the details to be observed in making it. The selection of shoes for varieties of feet or for special kinds of work follows, and afterwards the fitting and nailing-on are considered. Other chapters are devoted to roughing, shoeing defective feet, accidents, the use of leathers and pads. Throughout an endeavour has been made to be as simple and clear as possible in expression, to lay down correct general principles and to point out the technical details, which are essential to good shoeing. On all these points authorities are not agreed, and I trust those who differ from me will pardon any too dogmatic expressions of opinion in these pages. The illustrations will be of assistance in making clear the text. Some of these are copied from books, some are drawn from models or preparations, and some are diagrammatic. The books I am indebted to are: "Anatomy of the Domestic Animals," by Gamgee and Law; "On the Horse's Foot," by Bracy Clark; Bouley's "Atlas of the Foot," and Goyau's "Marechalerie." Above all, I am indebted to the late Professor Joseph Gamgee, who first gave me an interest in horse-shoeing and to whose teachings and writings I trace whatever ideas I now possess. Book Hints on Horsemanship Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hints on Horsemanship Classic Reprint written by M. F. McTaggart and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Horsemanship Just before the commencement of the war, I started, through the courtesy of the editor of the Field, publishing a series of articles on horsemanship. This series was rudely interrupted by the outbreak of war, and my military duties precluded my taking any further steps for a considerable period. But after fighting in France continuously for nearly four years, it was my fate, through the fortune of war, to be taken prisoner. Taking advantage of the enforced leisure at my disposal, I have passed many an otherwise weary hour in compiling this little volume. If it gives any of my readers as much pleasure to read as it has given me to write, I shall be fully rewarded; but it is more than I can hope that they will finish the last page with as much regret as I felt on the conclusion of my task. Now that peace has been declared and we can, once more, resume the pleasures of the hunting field, of racing, polo, and the show-ring, I am at last able to place my MSS. into the hands of the publishers.
