Book Domination and the Arts of Resistance

Download or read book Domination and the Arts of Resistance written by James C. Scott and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Play fool, to catch wise."--proverb of Jamaican slaves Confrontations between the powerless and powerful are laden with deception--the powerless feign deference and the powerful subtly assert their mastery. Peasants, serfs, untouchables, slaves, laborers, and prisoners are not free to speak their minds in the presence of power. These subordinate groups instead create a secret discourse that represents a critique of power spoken behind the backs of the dominant. At the same time, the powerful also develop a private dialogue about practices and goals of their rule that cannot be openly avowed. In this book, renowned social scientist James C. Scott offers a penetrating discussion both of the public roles played by the powerful and powerless and the mocking, vengeful tone they display off stage--what he terms their public and hidden transcripts. Using examples from the literature, history, and politics of cultures around the world, Scott examines the many guises this interaction has taken throughout history and the tensions and contradictions it reflects. Scott describes the ideological resistance of subordinate groups--their gossip, folktales, songs, jokes, and theater--their use of anonymity and ambiguity. He also analyzes how ruling elites attempt to convey an impression of hegemony through such devices as parades, state ceremony, and rituals of subordination and apology. Finally, he identifies--with quotations that range from the recollections of American slaves to those of Russian citizens during the beginnings of Gorbachev's glasnost campaign--the political electricity generated among oppressed groups when, for the first time, the hidden transcript is spoken directly and publicly in the face of power. His landmark work will revise our understanding of subordination, resistance, hegemony, folk culture, and the ideas behind revolt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows a blatant disregard for social acceptability as it instructs readers toward one simple goal: total domination. It's egotistical, sexist, narcissistic, and completely practical. These are the secrets of the alpha male, and throughout the centuries, they have been the only real path to money, women, and power. If you've tried everything else, it may be time to use what actually works. Introduction In every generation there are two groups. There are the masses. For them, the world is chaotic and painful. They live most of their lives knowing something is wrong but not knowing how to fix it. Their battle cry is one of weak mediocrity. They are neither satisfied nor rested. Their biggest fear is that they will die nothing more than the sum of their failures and frustrations. There is another group. They are the elite, the Alphas. They understand the universe as an equation. They get it. They are free in all the ways that others are not because they are free of fear. Everything is in abundance for them. They have the friends you want. They have the jobs you want. They have the cars you want parked in front of the houses you wish you owned. They experience the life you want while surrounded by the women you want. All the things you dream about, they know how to get - easier, faster, and smarter than you can. At the end of every day, they sleep with ease, looking forward to the next day's adventures. Which group are you a member of? What if you had a choice? This book will give you that choice. Inside You Will Discover... Part 1: Social Basics Being the envy of those around you How you choose to see yourself and those around you dictates how you assign value. We are going to stack the deck in your favor by preventing you from sabotaging your own value and stopping you from over-inflating the value of those around you. With these skills, you can thrive in any social environment. Part 2: Business Basics Failure and other necessary ingredients for success This is your guide for maneuvering when things periodically and inevitably go wrong in the business world. Where most men become paralyzed, you will become stronger. This is the art of building today's success out of yesterday's failures. Part 3: Power Basics Understanding the source and nature of your power The source and nature of your power is no great secret, yet most men will never understand these concepts because they expect complex answers. By accepting the truths you didn't expect, and taking action on a plan that is deceptively simple, you will gain power far beyond what you thought possible.

Download or read book On Violence written by Bruce B. Lawrence and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-06 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology brings together classic perspectives on violence, putting into productive conversation the thought of well-known theorists and activists, including Hannah Arendt, Karl Marx, G. W. F. Hegel, Osama bin Laden, Sigmund Freud, Frantz Fanon, Thomas Hobbes, and Pierre Bourdieu. The volume proceeds from the editors’ contention that violence is always historically contingent; it must be contextualized to be understood. They argue that violence is a process rather than a discrete product. It is intrinsic to the human condition, an inescapable fact of life that can be channeled and reckoned with but never completely suppressed. Above all, they seek to illuminate the relationship between action and knowledge about violence, and to examine how one might speak about violence without replicating or perpetuating it. On Violence is divided into five sections. Underscoring the connection between violence and economic world orders, the first section explores the dialectical relationship between domination and subordination. The second section brings together pieces by political actors who spoke about the tension between violence and nonviolence—Gandhi, Hitler, and Malcolm X—and by critics who have commented on that tension. The third grouping examines institutional faces of violence—familial, legal, and religious—while the fourth reflects on state violence. With a focus on issues of representation, the final section includes pieces on the relationship between violence and art, stories, and the media. The editors’ introduction to each section highlights the significant theoretical points raised and the interconnections between the essays. Brief introductions to individual selections provide information about the authors and their particular contributions to theories of violence. With selections by: Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, Osama bin Laden, Pierre Bourdieu, André Breton, James Cone, Robert M. Cover, Gilles Deleuze, Friedrich Engels, Frantz Fanon, Michel Foucault, Sigmund Freud, Mohandas Gandhi, René Girard, Linda Gordon, Antonio Gramsci, Félix Guattari, G. W. F. Book The Art of Sensual Female Dominance

Download or read book The Art of Sensual Female Dominance written by Claudia Varrin and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2000-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this introduction to a different, more daring love style, ex-mistress Claudia Varrin celebrates the delightful and unexpected romance and sensuality of D&S (dominance and submission) and offers suggestions on how to add this delicious spice to a bland sexual relationship. From its light-hearted "party games" to its detailed anatomy lesson (imperative for anyone who plans to wield a whip), The Art of Sensual Female Dominance explores many D&S practices in a direct but sensitive way. Varrin communicates how these practices not only are sexually fulfilling but also can bring couples closer emotionally and spiritually. The book suggests ways in which a woman can introduce D&S into a relationship, gives advice on how to set up one's first D&S scene, and explores the emotions each partner experiences before, during, and after "playtime." There is instruction on the specifics of bondage, foot worship, and discipline, to name just a few of the fabulous fetish and fantasy chapters. Leather one night, lace the next, D&S can provide the techniques and confidence to turn you into a different woman every night, the possibilities limited only by your imagination.

Book The Art of Psychological Warfare

Download or read book The Art of Psychological Warfare written by Christopher Kingler and published by . This book was released on with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it really possible to invade an enemy's mind and win without a fight? Can you achieve your goals by having others do the dirty work for you? Have you ever wondered why politicians, speakers and performers get everything they want? Are you tired of others always getting the better of you at work or in the rest of your life? Do modern life-hack tips always seem repetitive to you? If you ask yourself these questions, the answer is: The Art of Psychological Warfare. Psychological warfare has existed since the beginning of time. Ancient documents such as The Art of War by Sun Tzu or historical people such as Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Niccolò Machiavelli are examples of people who understood the timelessness of military and psychological strategies. With the progress of time, up to the present day, the art of war has become increasingly subtle and difficult to identify. Since the mid-twentieth century, great advances in our knowledge of the most effective methods of mass communication and persuasion have been visible in a wide range of professional fields, including journalism, marketing, public relations, interrogation and public opinion studies. However, these successes have also had troubling implications: propaganda, subversion, intimidation, disinformation, large-scale lies, deception, counter-insurgency, brainwashing and manipulation of public opinion in which our individual freedom of thought is constantly under attack. This manual provides a cutting-edge distillation of some of the most influential concepts of dark psychology, techniques honed over the centuries by politicians, strategists, speakers, performers and sellers around the world. This manual can be in your hands. But use it with diligence. Here are some areas that you will discover within The Art of Psychological Warfare: - What Sun Tzu and Machiavelli can teach you to destroy your enemies. - How to spot dark personalities and how to defend yourself from their influence. - The psychology of deception, influence and domination. - The art of blackmail and manipulation. - How brainwashing works in sects, organisations and brands. - How political propaganda and media tactics manage to do what they want with the masses. - The art of war applicable to work, relationships and the business world. This book is not a joke. Like it or not, ‘out there’, there will always be people who will try to hurt you or try to use you for their own pleasure or benefit. You are not the only person with access to psychological warfare methods. If you don't already know it, chances are you are a lifelong victim. In this book, the author studies the various forms of psychological warfare, the dark personalities, the key elements of this PsyWar and, most importantly, how we can fight back and win. It is, without doubt, the best gift you can give to yourself. The principles in this book are not hype, they have survived through the ages and will continue long into the future. After reading this book, you will never be the same again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new book on the Yaqui people of the north Mexican state of Sonora examines the history of Yaqui-Spanish interactions from first contact in 1533 through Mexican independence in 1821. The Yaquis and the Empire is the first major publication to deal with the colonial history of the Yaqui people in more than thirty years and presents a finely wrought portrait of the colonial experience of the indigenous peoples of Mexico's Yaqui River Valley. In examining native engagement with the forces of the Spanish empire, Raphael Brewster Folsom identifies three ironies that emerged from the dynamic and ambiguous relationship of the Yaquis and their conquerors: the strategic use by the Yaquis of both resistance and collaboration; the intertwined roles of violence and negotiation in the colonial pact; and the surprising ability of the imperial power to remain effective despite its general weakness.
