Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Developing Curing and Preserving Wood and Lumber Seasoning by what is known as the 'natural process was the first adopted for this purpose, and consisted in a slow drying out of the fluid matter of the wood by exposing it to the action of the open air. As the result sought could only be effected by an exposure of the wood for many seasons, this mode of treatment was termed seasoning, and the treated wood was called seasoned. So generally, and for so longa time has this natural process been in use, that the driving out of the sap by any means is called seasoning, and wood which has parted with any portion of its sap is designated as seasoned. While by seasoning, some of the putrescible substances and fermentable principles are expelled, and the operation of the causes of decay is thus counteracted, or postponed to some extent, its chief object is to put wood into a condition to keep its shape and form. Book The Kiln Drying of Lumber

Download or read book The Kiln Drying of Lumber written by Harry Donald Tiemann and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kiln Drying of Lumber: A Practical and Theoretical Treatise Wood which has been bent in iron forms should not be steamed again after the forms have been removed, but the drying should be started at once at a humidity less than saturation. Bent wood is in a peculiar condition due to the internal stresses introduced in the bending, and if steamed again after it has become "set" the fibers will soften up to such an extent that the wood will warp out of shape or even rupture on the tension side. This caution applies particularly to heavy pieces, such as bent oak wagon rims. When bent wood, after it is dry, is steamed, it will tend to resume its original form with considerable force. Bent wood should therefore not be steamed for removal of casehardening. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Kiln Drying of Lumber

Download or read book Kiln Drying of Lumber written by R.B. Keey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, no single book adequately covers a basic understanding of wood book satisfies the need for such a work. It describes drying in practice. This the fundamental basis of kiln-drying technology, to enable forest companies to imFrove their drying operations as high-quality timbers become scarcer and of yesteryear can no longer be tolerated. Adaptive the wasteful practices is no longer good enough. Innovations change based on past experience of the material being dried and the processes require a sound understanding of drying. Newer techniques, such as the use of ultrahigh temperature sea soning and superheated steam under vacuum, require an even greater depth of physical understanding for these methods to be used effectively and economically. book provides a description of modern ideas about wood structure, This moisture movement and stress development, from which models of the drying process are developed to give the kiln operator important information about the course of drying under specified conditions, and thus a means is compared with practice wherever for rational process improvement. Theory possible.

Book Drying of Silk Oak in Hawaii Classic Reprint

Download or read book Drying of Silk Oak in Hawaii Classic Reprint written by Roger G. Skolmen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-06 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drying of Silk-Oak in Hawaii To date little is known about the drying of lumber milled from trees grown in Hawaii. The study reported here was undertaken to answer some of the questions about the drying of silk-oak. Though this initial study was concerned primarily with air drying, the study material was kiln-dried to a low final moisture content suitable for cabinet wood. Air drying of lumber is influenced greatly by weather conditions and the methods of piling lumber on the yard. Hawaii has a great climatic variation from one location to another. In some inhabited areas rainfall exceeds 150 inches annually and high humidity prevails; here, very mild drying conditions often result in such sl w drying of lumber that stain and mold develop. Other areas have less than 20 inches annual rainfall and low humidity; here, drying conditions are severe and end splitting and surface checking may develop during drying. Since weather conditions vary greatly within relatively short distances, an area best suited for the air drying of local woods might be selected when planning installation of a sawmill. At a given location the effects of adverse weather can be minimized; drying conditions can be controlled on the air-drying yard by the methods of piling and protecting the piles of lumber from direct sun and rain.
