Book Art of the Drama Classic Reprint

Download or read book Art of the Drama Classic Reprint written by Fred B. Millett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art of the Drama This book is not a history of the drama. Nor is it a manual for the multitudes who aspire to write plays and sell them. It is a tool for the use of those who wish to deepen their understanding and enhance their enjoyment of plays witnessed in the theater or read in the study. As a textbook, it may prove useful in the study of the history of the drama or of the drama as a literary type, or in such a course as the Introduction to the Study of Drama as given at the University of Chicago. The book is divided into three parts, each of which emphasizes a particular aspect of the drama. Part I is mainly devoted to the historical aspect of the drama, the spirit of the age, the nature of the theater and audience in each of the major periods in dramatic his tory. It also contains a general discussion of the major forms or types of drama - tragedy, comedy, melodrama, and farce - and a more detailed consideration of the types of drama and comedy characteristic of each period. Part II considers the major modes of drama - classicism, romanticism, realism, sentimentalism, symbol ism, and expressionism. Part III concerns the major problems of dramatic technique and the characteristic solutions of those prob lems in the various types and modes and periods of drama. There is no question that it would have been more logical to con sider first the technical, second the aesthetic, and third the historical approach to the study of drama, and students of a logical turn of mind will have no difficulty in using the text in that order. But we have come to feel that it will, in general, be preferable for the student to master the facts in Part I before he ventures upon the more theoretical considerations of Parts II and III. Book The Illusion of the First Time in Acting Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Illusion of the First Time in Acting Classic Reprint written by William Gillette and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illusion of the First Time in Acting But is he a bad actor merely because he adopts his own methods and knows nothing about the art of other people? Well, I think perhaps he is. Altho he amuses me, I'm afraid he is a bad actor. But he is not as bad as he would be if that other type, who really knows the rules, took him in hand and tried to make him a good actor. Then he would be atrocious. As a matter of fact, he is an actor who can play only one kind of part. But he plays that better than any good actor living. Therefore the public, for whom the theater is run, gets the advantage. His reign lasts just as long as there are plays which require that type. If his part is a prominent one and he makes a very great success, so much the worse for him. He isthen placed in an exalted position from which he is bound to fall when the authors have worn themselves out in their frantic endeavor to hold him there; and he will automatically pass from the public ken, des tined merely to bob up now and then in a small part that lends itself to his personal ity - and destined to become a disappointed man for the rest of his life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plays, Acting, and Music: A Book of Theory When this book was first published it con tained a large amount of material which is now taken out of it; additions have been made, besides many corrections and changes; and the whole form of the book has been remodelled. It is now more what it ought to have been from the first; what I saw, from the moment of its publication, that it ought to have been: a book of theory. The rather formal announcement of my intentions which I made in my preface is reprinted here, because, at all events, the programme was carried out. Book Talma on the Actor s Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book Talma on the Actor s Art Classic Reprint written by Franc ̧ois Joseph Talma and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talma on the Actor's Art No one an read Talma's subtle yet simple description of the qualities and the course of study essential to the actor, without a conviction that acting is one of the most fascinating of the arts. To the actor the whole field of human nature is Open. Whether in the ideal world of the stage or in the actual world of social intercourse, hismind is continually accumulating impressions Which become a part of his artistic being. This experience is common to the students of 'other arts, 'ibut the actor has this advantage, that all he learns is embodied in his own personality, not translated through some medium, like the painter's canvas or the novelist's page. At the same time, this purely personal art is subjected to the most severe tests. It is easier to detect a aw in an actor's impersonation than an improbability in a book. The man enacts the character before many - a false intonation jars immediately upon the ear, an unnatural look or gesture is promptly convicted by the eye. The co-operation of sensibility and intelligence of which Talma speaks, has thus to be conducted under the most exacting conditions. There must be no suggestion of effort. The essence of acting is its apparent Spontaneity. Perfect illusion is attained when every effect seems to be an accident. If the declamation is too measured, the sense of truth is at once impaired 3 if, on the other hand, it falls only the shadow of a shade below the level of appropriate expres sion, the auditor's sympathy is instantly checked. The union of grandeur without pomp, and nature without triviality, is of an artistic ideals the most difficult to attain; and with this goal before him no actor can feel that his art is a plaything. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Acting Of course, the unthinking spectators will always fail to give a thought to the unseen dramatist, and they will always confuse the actor with the character he is personating. They will applaud the lovely heroine, because they sym pathize with her sufferings or her sen timents, wholly regardless of the artis tic accomplishment of the actress who irnpersonates her; and they will hiss the unsightly villain, whom they de test for his evil intent, even tho the actor taking the part may be the most skilful of the performers. They would discover nothing absurd in the remark of a certain drummer, once made to a distinguisht comedian: Mr. Drew, I don't see how you manage to think of so many clever things to say on the stage. I wish I could learn to do that ofi'hand. It would be mighty useful to me in my business. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Stella Adler on Ibsen Strindberg and Chekhov

Download or read book Stella Adler on Ibsen Strindberg and Chekhov written by Stella Adler and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-04-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her long-awaited book, the legendary acting teacher Stella Adler gives us her extraordinary insights into the work of Henrik Ibsen ("The creation of the modern theater took a genius like Ibsen. . .Miller and Odets, Inge and O'Neill, Williams and Shaw, swallowed the whole of him"), August Strindberg ("He understood and predicted the forces that would break in our lives"), and Anton Chekhov ("Chekhov doesn't want a play, he wants what happens in life. In life, people don't usually kill each other. They talk"). Through the plays of these masters, Adler discusses the arts of playwriting and script interpretation ("There are two aspects of the theater. One belongs to the author and the other to the actor. The actor thinks it all belongs to the author. . .The curtain goes up and all he knows are the lines. . .It is not enough. . .Script interpretation is your profession"). She looks into aspects of society and class, and into our cultural past, as well as the evolution of the modern spirit ("The actor learns from Ibsen what is modern in the modern theater. There are no villains, no heroes. Ibsen understands, more than anything, there is more than one truth"). Stella Adler--daughter of Jacob Adler, who was universally acknowledged to be the greatest actor of the Yiddish theater, and herself a disciple of Stanislavsky--examines the role of the actor and brings to life the plays from which all modern theater derives: Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, An Enemy of the People, and A Doll's House; Strindberg's Miss Julie and The Father; Chekhov's The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orchard, and Three Sisters ("Masha is the sister who is the mystery. You cannot reach her. You cannot reach the artist. There is no logical way. Keep her in a special pocket of feelings that are complex and different"). Adler discusses the ideas behind these plays and explores the world of the playwrights and the history--both familial and cultural--that informed their work. She illumines not only the dramatic essence of each play but its subtext as well, continually asking questions that deepen one's understanding of the work and of the human spirit. Adler's book, brilliantly edited by Barry Paris, puts her famous lectures into print for the first time.

Download or read book Screen Acting written by Inez Klumph and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Screen Acting: Its Requirements and Rewards It is difficult to step from behind the motion picture screen and tell those who have always sat in front of it how and why we who make pictures do the things we do. It is even harder to tell those who want to become one of us, how they may do so, as it is hard, always, to put the telling of things in the place of actual experience. What can be done in this way, I feel that this book can do, for I know its authors, and am assured of their knowledge of their subject and their sincerity in presenting it. There is only one place where a motion picture actor can develop his art, and that is in a motion picture studio. But many a person who sees only the glamor of the work and knows nothing of the hardships it entails can learn much by reading all that he can obtain on the subject. In that way he can get an idea of whether or not he is suited to this profession. When you have read this book, and see the motion picture screen through news eyes, you may lose your desire to join the company of those who act before the camera. But if your desire to follow this profession still persists, then I can only say - good luck to you! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Amateur Theatricals: A Practical Guide for Amateur Actors Another serious fault which frequently puts a damper on an entertainment, is the inexcusable error Of putting Off certain lines of stage business until the night of the performance. If a man in command of an ocean steamer should declare that it would be. Time enough to learn navigation after he got Out of sight of land, people would call him a lunatic; yet amateurs act in a similar way when they go through rehearsal after rehearsal, leaving important stage business until the last night. And finally we have that unmitigated nuisance, the stumb ling actor, who is never up in his lines, gives eng cues, and, over and again, throws an entire scene into confusion. Such a man, no matter how great his natural ability may he, should be dropped without ceremony. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
