The first kind of cover having a square shape was a protection in its simplest form, and contemporary with the rolls. It was a leathern cover wrapped round Greek and Roman waxed tablets. When, at a later period, leaves were stitched or stuck together, they were bound in a cover having a movable back, the sides being made of leather, wood, or ivory. When placed on shelves books lay on their sides, and had attached to the covers little cedar tablets inscribed with their titles. And yet perhaps the poet is more independent of circum stances than the artist of any other art: his language is ready-made for him, his mind may serve both for a tablet and a storehouse, paper and ink are both cheap and common, and books with the spoils of time are widely spread; or else we might say that Burns was in the position of some mute inglorious Milton. But these natural facilities are by no means available for the possible painter, sculptor, architect, musician, or actor. Many a shepherd lad who has drawn One of his sheep on a bit of slate has not, like Giotto, met with a Cimabue to carry him off to the very centre of Art, to keep him, and to teach him; good examples of contem porary Art must be spread broadcast over the country, and masterpieces of former times, at no impossible distances; and for the poor student there must be opportunities of sup port as well as of instruction. The old monasteries supplied much of the machinery now wanting. A peasant lad could be taught in the school, and, if promising, could be kept and passed on from monastery to monastery till he became a pope, a cardinal, a bishop, or till he was fit to act as a minister of state or to become a great artist.
