Its Islamic era began in 1071, when the Seljuk Turks, nomads from Central Asia who had already taken control of Persia, defeated the Byzantine army at Manzikert and moved west, creating a new sultanate in Anatolia. The Seljuks were eventually succeeded in this region by the Ottoman Turks, who crossed the Bosphorus to conquer an exhausted Constantinople in 1453, and went on to extend their power far beyond the borders of modern Turkey, establishing an empire that endured until the early twentieth century. Ruling over a land that had always been at the crossroads of east and west, these Islamic dynasties developed a cosmopolitan art and architecture. As art historian Giovanni Curatola demonstrates in this insightful new book, they combined elements of the prestigious Persian style and memories of their nomadic past with local Mediterranean traditions, and also adopted local building materials, such as stone and wood. Curatola introduces us first to the new types of buildings introduced by the Seljuks?like the caravansary and the türbe, or mausoleum?and then to the sophisticated architectural achievements of the Ottomans, which culminated in the great domed mosques constructed by the master builder Mimar Sinan (d. 1588). The present series is a contribution to make available for all people around the world to see in pictures the architectural features (i. e., forms, designs, decorations of buildings) in selected countries. It is a comparative, pictorial introduction of architectural features in six selected countries to show the talents, skills, and masterships of builders in creation of architectural forms and designs in the selected countries. More specifically, there are two main architectural styles in Europe (--as well as in mountainous countries such as Armenia and Georgia, ) and in Iran. While a stone architecture is common in Europe and in the mountainous countries, a clay architecture is used in Iran. A comparative display of the two styles, the stone vs. clay architecture, therefore, is the main theme of the series titled: A Comparative Display Of Art And Architecture. The third volume of this series is about architectural styles in Turkey [ Turkiye ] (Istanbul) and Iran. Using a functional-equivalency approach, the series focuses on architectural features from Europe and mountainous countries and Iran that, while structurally are different, functionally are similar or have similarity with each other. For example, both a church and a mosque are religious buildings with similar functions but with different structures. Although there are numerous published books about art and architecture in Europe or in Iran separately, but none makes a comparative introduction using a functional- equivalency approach. The present series, therefore, should be regarded as the first original work that seeks to present a comparative, pictorial introduction of two different architectural styles, stone vs. clay architectural styles, by displaying their main features side by side. For example, the illustrations are grouped into several categories (Introduction) [ i. e, 1) Historic or Heritage Buildings; 2) Stone (Khachkar) vs. Brick or Tile decorations; and 3) Religious Buildings: Churches vs. Jam'a mosques]. (Otherwise, assuming that the images collected and presented in this volume are also presented randomly in some other books about art and architecture in Armenia or in Iran, an estimated 50 to 100 books on the subjects of art and architecture in either Turkey (Turkiye) or Iran should be browsed over, here or there, to find similar images collected in this volume.) Volume III of this series compares architectural features in Turkey [ Turkiye ] (Istanbul) to similar, clay architectural features in Iran. Many architectural features in Turkey are similar to those in Iran. Both countries have mosques, baazaars, and residences built by the use of bricks. Book excerpt: In its transition from 18th century capital of the Ottoman Empire to economic powerhouse of the Turkish Republic, the city of Istanbul has been transformed beyond recognition. After the establishment of the Republic, Turkey increasingly turned to the West for ideas about how to create, shape and direct the development of a modern culture. This desire was felt most strongly in Istanbul, Turkey's most populous city. Its status as the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and later the economic hub of Turkey, made Istanbul a forum for the different regimes to display their political, ideological and social policies in the context of the built environment. Some modernisation policies never came to fruition - such as the unsuccessful late nineteenth century attempt by young Ottoman bureaucrats to initiate planning reforms at a time when the Empire was on the verge of collapse. The new Turkish Republic at first neglected the old Ottoman capital, and later attempted to make it conform to its secular political ideology. After World War II, Istanbul entered a new era in modernisation, with the Democratic Party government conducting a large scale re-design of Istanbul's urban form in order to show Turkey as a major political and economic force in post-war Europe and the Middle East. The scale of this modernisation process mirrored the spectacular transformation of Paris a century before: thousands of buildings were demolished, boulevards were carved out within the old city, and whole new residential neighbourhoods were created. In telling the story of this dramatic transformation, Murat Gül investigates and traces the impact of these changing policies on the very fabric of the city itself - in its streets, buildings and landscapes - and in the process provides new insights into the history of Turkey.
