Book The Array of Sukhavati Pure Land A Concise Mahayana Sutra eBook

Download or read book The Array of Sukhavati Pure Land A Concise Mahayana Sutra eBook written by FPMT and published by FPMT. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the root text: If you write in gold The Array of Sukhavati Pure Land you will be reborn in Sukhavati for 100,000 eons. If you write it in gold and silver, you will be reborn in Sukhavati for 10,000 eons. If you write it in silver, you will be reborn in Sukhavati for 1,000 eons. If you write it in vermillion, you will be reborn in Sukhavati for 100 eons. If you write it in black ink, you will be reborn in Sukhavati for 10 eons. You will be reborn in the pure realm of Dharmakaya Boundless Light. This is the essence of the ultimate. It is the pith of the dharmata. It is the king of all confessions of misdeeds. If you write and recite this, you will definitely be purified even if you kill insects and creatures, such as 100 people, 100 horses, 100 snakes, 100 dogs, 100 women, 100 cattle, 100 fish, 100 pigs, 100 monkeys, and 100 sheep; curse others; poison others; engage in miserliness and deceit; are the owner of a dog that kills deer; have degenerated your promises and commitments and then engage in sexual misconduct; kill your guru, abbot, or teacher; or do any of the ten nonvirtues. When someone dies, the best is to have a lama do this ritual for the corpse on the morning of the cremation; the middling is for a geshe to do it; and the last is for a monk to do it. If that isn’t possible, at least someone who knows how to read should do it. If it is recited three times and then tapped on the corpse’s head three times, without doubt that person will become a buddha. In this eon, all Dharma practices that are sealed with this prayer of dedication are greatly meritorious. If those who write, recite, keep, or disseminate it, read or recite it three times, they will not experience sickness or (untimely) death. May all of their wishes be fulfilled, and may they meet with those who are propitious and endowed with the fortunate karma to be reborn in Sukhavati Pure Land. 2020 edition.

Book excerpt: The Infinite Life Sutra is a Mahayana Buddhist sutra, and the primary text of Pure Land Buddhism. It is the longest of the three major texts of Pure Land Buddhism. In the Longer Sukhavativyuha Sutra, the Buddha begins by describing to his attendant Ananda a past life of the Buddha. Amitabha. He states that in a past life, Amitabha was once king who renounced his kingdom, and became a bodhisattva monk named Dharmakara ("Dharma Storehouse").Under the guidance of the buddha Lokesvararaja ("World Sovereign King"), innumerable buddha-lands throughout the ten directions were revealed to him. After meditating for five eons as a bodhisattva, he then made a great series of vows to save all sentient beings, and through his great merit, created the realm of Sukhavati ("Ultimate Bliss").This land of Sukhavati would later come to be known as the Pure Land. The sutra describes in great detail Sukhavati and its inhabitants, and how they are able to attain rebirth there. The text also provides a detailed account of the various levels and beings in the Mahayana Buddhist cosmology. The sutra also contains the forty-eight vows of Amitabha Buddha to save all sentient beings. The eighteenth vow is among the most important as it forms a basic tenet of the Pure Land school. This vow is most commonly known as shi nian bi sheng yuan, because it states that if a sentient being makes even "ten recitations" of the Amitabha Buddha's name they will attain "certain rebirth" into the Pure Land.

Book excerpt: The Heart Sutra is a famous sutra in Mahayana Buddhism. Its title literally means "The Heart of the Perfection of Understanding." The Heart Sutra is often cited as the best-known and most popular Buddhist scripture of all. Various commentators divide this text into different numbers of sections. Briefly, the sutra describes the experience of liberation of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokitesvara, as a result of insight gained while engaged in deep meditation to awaken the faculty of prajna (wisdom). The insight refers to apprehension of the fundamental emptiness of all phenomena, known through and as the five aggregates of human existence (skandhas): form (rupa), feeling (vedana), volitions (samskara), perceptions (samjna), and consciousness (vijnana). The Supplementary Amitabha Sutra The bulk of the Amitabha Sutra, considerably shorter than other Pure Land sutras, consists of a discourse which the Buddha gave at Jeta Grove in Sravastito his disciple Sariputra. The talk concerned the wondrous adornments that await the righteous in the western pure land of Sukhavati, as well as the beings that reside there, including the buddha Amitabha. The text also describes what one must do to be reborn there.

Book Dogen s Manuals of Zen Meditation

Download or read book Dogen s Manuals of Zen Meditation written by Carl Bielefeldt and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1990-08-16 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zen Buddhism is perhaps best known for its emphasis on meditation, and probably no figure in the history of Zen is more closely associated with meditation practice than the thirteenth-century Japanese master Dogen, founder of the Soto school. This study examines the historical and religious character of the practice as it is described in Dogen's own meditation texts, introducing new materials and original perspectives on one of the most influential spiritual traditions of East Asian civilization. The Soto version of Zen meditation is known as "just sitting," a practice in which, through the cultivation of the subtle state of "nonthinking," the meditator is said to be brought into perfect accord with the higher consciousness of the "Buddha mind" inherent in all beings. This study examines the historical and religious character of the practice as it is described in Dogen's own meditation texts, introducing new materials and original perspectives on one of the most influential spiritual traditions of East Asian civilization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late one night, as he seeks shelter in a potter’s entrance hall, Kamanita meets an old ascetic. Encouraged by the monk, he relates the story of his life so far: how, born the son of an Indian merchant, he follows in his father’s footsteps; how, on his first trading trip, he meets and loses his great love Vasitthi; how he builds up a fortune and raises a family; and how one day he leaves everything behind to set on a pilgrimage. But the old monk is not who he seems, and when Kamanita refuses to accept his teachings, the consequences are startling and irreversible. What follows is a colorful, bewildering, revelation-filled journey through the past, present, and the Paradise of the West. Sixteen years before Hermann Hesse published Siddharta, there was another European writer who used Buddhism as a source of inspiration for a novel. After earlier naturalistic works such as Minna and Germanernes Lærling (The German Apprentice), The Pilgrim Kamanita was a stylistic turning point for the Dane Karl Gjellerup. It became a worldwide success, and his subsequent novels would touch on Buddhism as well. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: Shantideva’s Bodhisattvacharyavatara (A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life) holds a unique place in Mahayana Buddhism akin to that of the Dhammapada in Hinayana Buddhism and the Bhagavadgita in Hinduism. In combining those rare qualities of scholastic precision, spiritual depth and poetical beauty, its appeal extends to a wide audience of Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Composed in India during the 8th century of the Christian era, it has since been an inspiration to millions of people throughout the world. This present translation by Stephen Batchelor is based upon a 12th century Tibetan commentary as orally explained by Ven. Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey. The ninth chapter on wisdom has been expanded for this edition with relevant commentarial passages.

Book Sacred Mandates

Download or read book Sacred Mandates written by Timothy Brook and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-05-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary discussions of international relations in Asia tend to be tethered in the present, unmoored from the historical contexts that give them meaning. Sacred Mandates, edited by Timothy Brook, Michael van Walt van Praag, and Miek Boltjes, redresses this oversight by examining the complex history of inter-polity relations in Inner and East Asia from the thirteenth century to the twentieth, in order to help us understand and develop policies to address challenges in the region today. This book argues that understanding the diversity of past legal orders helps explain the forms of contemporary conflict, as well as the conflicting historical narratives that animate tensions. Rather than proceed sequentially by way of dynasties, the editors identify three “worlds”—Chingssid Mongol, Tibetan Buddhist, and Confucian Sinic—that represent different forms of civilization authority and legal order. This novel framework enables us to escape the modern tendency to view the international system solely as the interaction of independent states, and instead detect the effects of the complicated history at play between and within regions. Contributors from a wide range of disciplines cover a host of topics: the development of international law, sovereignty, state formation, ruler legitimacy, and imperial expansion, as well as the role of spiritual authority on state behavior, the impact of modernization, and the challenges for peace processes. The culmination of five years of collaborative research, Sacred Mandates will be the definitive historical guide to international and intrastate relations in Asia, of interest to policymakers and scholars alike, for years to come.

Book Religions and Extraterrestrial Life

Download or read book Religions and Extraterrestrial Life written by David A. Weintraub and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, the debate about life on other worlds is quickly changing from the realm of speculation to the domain of hard science. Within a few years, as a consequence of the rapid discovery by astronomers of planets around other stars, astronomers very likely will have discovered clear evidence of life beyond the Earth. Such a discovery of extraterrestrial life will change everything. Knowing the answer as to whether humanity has company in the universe will trigger one of the greatest intellectual revolutions in history, not the least of which will be a challenge for at least some terrestrial religions. Which religions will handle the discovery of extraterrestrial life with ease and which will struggle to assimilate this new knowledge about our place in the universe? Some religions as currently practiced appear to only be viable on Earth. Other religions could be practiced on distant worlds but nevertheless identify both Earth as a place and humankind as a species of singular spiritual religious importance, while some religions could be practiced equally well anywhere in the universe by any sentient beings. Weintraub guides readers on an invigorating tour of the world’s most widely practiced religions. It reveals what, if anything, each religion has to say about the possibility that extraterrestrial life exists and how, or if, a particular religion would work on other planets in distant parts of the universe.

Book Six Session Guru Yoga Commentary eBook

Download or read book Six Session Guru Yoga Commentary eBook written by Lama Zopa Rinpoche and published by FPMT. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practice is restricted to only those with the appropriate tantric initiation. If you are unsure whether you are qualified or not, please email us at [email protected]. By purchasing this text, you confirm you have received the appropriate initiation. You need to have received an initiation (wang) of the yoga tantra or highest yoga tantra class in order to read these commentaries of the six-session guru yoga. Within the Gelug tradition, practicing the six-session guru yoga is a daily commitment for anyone who has received a highest yoga tantra initiation. This text provides the commentary from Lama Zopa Rinpoche on the benefits of the practice, how to meditate on each verse of the sadhana, and the samayas of the five buddha families. The commentary uses the extension version of Phabongkha Dechen Nyingpo’s Six-Session Guru Yoga as its basis. Contents Include: - The Benefits of Six-Session Guru Yoga - How to Practice Six-Session Guru Yoga - The Samayas of the Five Buddha Families “Phabongkha Dechen Nyingpo said Six-Session Guru Yoga is much more precious than three galaxies filled with gold,” Lama Zopa Rinpoche teaches in Six-Session Guru Yoga Commentary. “Why? Because the practice of Six-Session Guru Yoga has unbelievable benefits. It gives incredible protection. This practice eliminates so much heavy negative karma and purifies all ten nonvirtuous actions. It purifies broken pratimoksha vows, bodhisattva vows, and tantric vows. It allows us to practice the general tantric vows, the samayas of the five buddha families, and the particular tantric root vows. By doing Six-Session Guru Yoga, we practice all the samayas and are reminded of the fourteen root downfalls and eight bompos of mother tantra samaya. We accumulate unbelievable merit by keeping the samayas and vows of tantra. According to the root tantra of Manjughosha, without practicing the pure morality of these vows, we have no basis for tantric realization and no way to achieve enlightenment. Even if we don’t do many other practices, living purely in the samaya vows is enough. Therefore, this practice gives incredible protection.” 76 pages, 2020 edition.

Download or read book Buddhist Fasting Practice written by Wangchen Rinpoche and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2009-06-16 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tibetan Buddhist practice of Nyungne (“nyoong-nay”) has been gaining increased attention in Buddhist centers across North America. Participants say the practice purifies them both physically and spiritually. This volume is the only comprehensive treatment in English of these powerful teachings. Nyungne is a profound, two-and-a-half-day practice, a length of time especially helpful for people whose schedules cannot accommodate long-term retreat. It involves the keeping of strict vows; the second day is devoted to complete silence and fasting. The meditation centers on the recitations, mantras, and guided visualizations of the Thousand-Armed Chenrezig, the embodiment of all the buddhas’ loving-kindness and compassion. Translated as “abiding in the fast,” Nyungne is said to be effective in the healing of illness, the nurturing of compassion, and the purification of negative karma.
