Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Army of the Potomac From 1861 to 1863: An Inside View of the History of the Army of the Potomac and Its Leaders as Told in the Official Dispatches, Reports and Secret Correspondence The following pages are a compilation of all the impor tant official reports, dispatches, and correspondence, relating to the formation and movements of one of the largest, grandest, and most magnificent armies which the world had eve-r seen; and, of the actions of the principal actors in that momentous struggle in the life of the nation during the period from 1861 to 1863. The process of research through the tangled mass of official records, and the method of their arrangement; in chronological and narrative form necessarily involved a very great deal of time and labor, embracing as it does the records and correspondence of both the Union and Confederate armies, and forms a concise and accurate his; tory of its movements during that eventful period, as it was recorded from day to day, in regular and consecutive order of events by the actors themselves. No special attention has been given to the particular action or movements of individual army corps, divisions, brigades, or other military subdivisions, as such; the aim has been to treat the respective armies with their com manders, as distinct units, and from their own reports and correspondence, (much of which was secret and never heretofore published, ) much light is thrown on acts. And movements which have in many instances - maybe from their not being clearly understood, -been grossly mis represented. Download or read book McClellan and the Union High Command 1861 1863 written by Jeffrey W. Green and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Washington’s proximity to the Confederate capital of Richmond, Union military operations in the first two years of the Civil War focused mainly on the Eastern Theater, where General McClellan commanded the Army of the Potomac. McClellan’s “On to Richmond” battle cry dominated strategic thinking in the high command. When he failed and was sacked by President Lincoln, a coterie of senior officers sought his return. This re-examination of the high command and McClellan’s war in the East provides a broader understanding of the Union’s inability to achieve victory in the first two years, and takes the debate about the Union’s leadership into new areas.

Book The Army of the Potomac Birth of command November 1860 September 1861

Download or read book The Army of the Potomac Birth of command November 1860 September 1861 written by Russel Harrison Beatie and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the first detailed and comprehensive study of the Army of the Potomac, the Union's largest and most important army in the field throughout the Civil War. It is the first volume in a multipart work that will be the Union counterpart to Douglas Southall Freeman's award-winning epic, Lee's Lieutenants: A Study in Command. Like Freeman, Russel H. Beatie meticulously examines the relationships and performance of the high-ranking officers of one army -- the Army of the Potomac -- as well as those who served in the satellite forces that also operated in the Eastern Theater. He draws almost entirely on manuscript sources, many previously unexamined, and thus reaches conclusions about the actions of the Union's prominent generals that differ -- often significantly -- from traditional historical thinking. - Jacket flap.
