Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Armenian Awakening: A History of the Armenian Church, 1820-1860 The Armenians, like the Greeks and Latins, have seven sacraments. Baptism is administered to infants eight days old by threefold immersion, with the adjuncts of confirmation and unction. Baptism is regarded as the cause of regeneration, and is sup posed to remove original sin. It is held to be liter ally a christening. Without it the infant is a heathen; and an Armenian mother will not kiss her babe until it has been baptized. The Armenians celebrate mass as a propitiatory sacrifice. They believe in transubstantiation, and venerate the elements as the divine body and blood. Like the Latin church and unlike the Greek, they use unleavened bread in the eucharist, and unlike either mix no water with the wine. Prayers for the dead accompany the mass, but no purgatory is recognized. Oricular confession is observed preparatory to the communion, the priest imposing penance and pronouncing absolution. Book The Ottoman East in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book The Ottoman East in the Nineteenth Century written by Ali Sipahi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ottoman East what is also called Western Armenia, Northern Kurdistan or Eastern Anatolia compared to other peripheries of the Ottoman Empire, has received very little attention in Ottoman historiography. So-called taboo subjects such as the fate of Ottoman Armenians and the Kurdish Question during the latter years of the Ottoman Empire have contributed to this dearth of analysis. By integrating the Armenian and Kurdish elements into the study of the Ottoman Empire, this book seeks to emphasise the interaction of different ethno-religious groups. As an area where Ottoman centralization faced unsurpassable challenges, the Ottoman East offers an ideal opportunity to examine an alternative social and political model for imperial governance and the means by which provincial rule interacted with the Ottoman centre. Discussing vital issues across this geographical area, such as trade routes, regional economic trends, migration patterns and the molding of local and national identities, this book offers a unique and fresh approach to the history and politics of modernization and empire in the wider region."

Book excerpt: A literary detective story, a historical survey, and an important contribution to translation studies This book from Kenneth J. Thomas is both a philological and linguistic analysis of Persian translations and a call for interfaith cooperation. Thomas appraises biblical translation efforts from the fifth to the twenty-first centuries of Persian history when successive translators and groups of translators, sometimes of different faiths, worked to reshape and refine versions of the Bible in the supple Persian language of their times. Restless, impelled, and wide-ranging, this is a story of translations commissioned by shahs, undertaken by Christian and Jewish communities, and produced by teams working outside the country. Features Demonstration of the effects of the lack of a standard Persian vocabulary for key biblical terms on literary style and word choice Technical analyses and overviews of Persian biblical translations A careful examination of sixteen centuries' worth of Bible translations
