Book Archives of Dentistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Archives of Dentistry Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archives of Dentistry A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art is a compendium of dentistry around the United States in 1887. The Archives is the successor to the Missouri Dental Journal and a consolidation of the New England Journal of Dentistry. Calling the Archives a record of "dental science and art" is perceptive because the book is a combination of hard scientific research with discussions about the life of dental practitioners. These slice of life stories liven up the text, which also includes important speeches, case studies and scientific reports. There are annual and semi-annual reports from nearly every professional dental association in the United States, many of which still exist today. The minutes of the meetings typically begin with fanciful introductions and even jokes, such as Dr. Twitchell's observation that everyone was in such good cheer, one would never suspect that the day before everyone had been "down in the mouth." Papers from the leading dental schools of the time are presented in their entirety, which is excellent research material for academics. Ethical dilemmas are discussed in detail, and they include issues that still resonate with dentists today, like the demand for cheap dental services and what to do about nervous and anxious patients. There are summaries of medical practices which have since been discarded, like using peroxide to treat ulcers and sinuses. As with any volume from the time period, there are references that are culturally dated. Still these observations have much to teach us about history generally. For example, the Archive notes without further comment that the National Hospital of London has decided to admit "lady dentists," while a dentist from Honolulu writes to explain that the "noble savages" of Big Island are not insulated from tooth decay. A toothache, it seems, is one of the world's great unifying experiences. This more than 700 page volume earns a 5-star rating. Book The Archives of Dentistry 1886 Vol 3

Download or read book The Archives of Dentistry 1886 Vol 3 written by John G. Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art is a surprisingly entertaining compendium of dentistry around the United States. The compilation is the successor to the Missouri Dental Journal and a consolidation of the New England Journal of Dentistry. The three publications combined forces to provide a comprehensive look at the practice of dentistry in the 19th Century. The first thing you learn reading The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art is that the practice of dentistry in the 19th Century is more advanced than one would have assumed. There are research papers on everything from the science of tooth decay, to the types of cement, to proper hygiene practices for patients. Case studies are presented throughout. Some cases seem roughly equivalent to how dental problems would be handled today, but in other instances the advice reads like horror or science fiction. For example, the professionals debate about whether teeth could be transplanted from one person to another. There is also a description of the uses of cocaine as anesthetic for operations, with the conclusion that it makes surgery completely painless. Minutes from local meetings of dental societies are also presented. For example, at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Connecticut Valley Dental Society, the dentists share lectures on crown and bridgework before engaging in a round-table about specific case studies. These are great learning opportunities for readers, regardless of whether they are dental practitioners. Cultural stereotypes of the time surface, such as when a dentist says that when fillings were performed on the canine teeth of "the negro," the teeth were guaranteed to fail within three years. Strange ideas are presented, like the alleged relationship between abscessed teeth and the condition of the bowels. There are advertisements for things like tin foil, tooth powder, and Listerine sprinkled throughout the Archive. These observations, case studies and advertisements alone compel me to recommend The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art for a general audience, not just those interested in the dental profession. Book The Archives of Dentistry Vol 7

Download or read book The Archives of Dentistry Vol 7 written by W. H. Eames and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archives of Dentistry is an assortment of articles on dentistry from the turn of the nineteenth century. This publication is successor to the Missouri Dental Journal and represents a consolidation with that publication and the New England Journal of Dentistry. This edition has four illustrious editors: Dr. W. H. Eames, Dr. C. S. Stockton, Dr. John G. Harper, and Dr. William Conrad, and fifty individual contributors, each presenting a unique point of view on a different topic in the field of dentistry. Archives of Dentistry boasts that "No article will be published in this department that has been read before any society or has appeared in any publication" as an attempt to establish legitimacy as a leading source of information for anyone interested in the field. This volume consists of a well-spring of information for both dentists and dentistry enthusiasts. Topics covered include fillings, enamel, hygiene, dental legislation, ethics in dentistry, notable figures in dentistry, historic practices of dentistry, and new research and treatment. The book even includes some submissions on topics that are not directly related to dentistry, but often impact dentists in a tangential sense, namely hypnotism as a means of reducing anxiety and the inconvenience of mustaches! Archives of Dentistry is an interesting text full of articles on dental practice, history, and issues impacting dentists at the turn of the nineteenth century. This book is one of a series of books on dentistry and promises a wealth of topics to explore. An interesting read for those intrigued by dentistry and dental issues. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Archives of Dentistry, 1884, Vol. 1: A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art This objection to its use, where its surface is exposed only to the secretions of the mouth, is practically of no moment. Ten or twelve years integrity as a stopping, should be satisfactory endorse ment of its value as a filling material, and this is not too much to expect of it in favorable locations. In such it may properly be depended upon as a permanent filling. As a temporary filling, the facility with which it may be removed and replaced at any time, recommends it. To secure the best results, as perfect preparation of the cavity is necessary, as for any other material, and as careful protection against moisture is demanded in the introduction of the filling, which feature in the operation must also be performed with the utmost care. Suitable instruments are as necessary for the proper working of this material, as for gold or any other, and without them, the best results cannot be expected. The method of its introduction into the cavity, not unlike other materials, varies with the peculiarities of the case presented, and a satisfactory result demands the best judgment of the operator. With proper care, a satisfactory result is comparatively easy of attainment, but neglect of proper precaution will as certainly result in failure, as would the indifferent use of any other material. Danger of failure, threatens in proportion to the degree of careless ness, induced by the simplicity of the task to be undertaken, while success attends our efforts in ratio with the degree of anxiety and purpose excited by the difficulties presented. Not unlike other materials, experience will be found no disadvantage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Archives of Dentistry Vol 1 written by Edgar Park and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Dentistry, Vol. 1: January, 1884 Amalgam will save the teeth; we have all Been proof of this, and consequently it commends itself to us. In the discharge of our duty to the poor, remembering our duty to ourselves, I know of no agent by whose employment we can furnish to the patient so great satisfaction in return for the expenditure of their limited means. There arc seductive features possessed by this material against which it is well to guard ones self, as the temptation it offers to economize time, relieve anxiety, avoid labor, or the gratification of any other selfish motive. To my mind its use for a permanent purpose, in cases where a fair compensation is obtainable, is unwise, and not worthy of the act of a skilled practitioner. There is something more demanded of the dentist, than the mere saving of a tooth to usefulness. This first object having be accomplished, the appearance his operation presents, must never he lost sight of. The intelligent patron presents himself to the dentist, because he has confidence in his ability and integrity, depending upon his professional judgment and skill, to do the best thing his case requires, and I must say. my honest convictions are that this is not to be done by the use of amalgam in filling the teeth. My own experience in the use of amalgam. i somewhat limited, but my observation prejudices me against its use; not only because of the objectionable appearance of the plug itself from oxidation, but because nearly every tooth I have ever seen filled with it, has become discolored in consequence of its use. It is claimed for some: the recent alloys, that these objections have been overcome. If this proves to be true, I am not sure but my prejudices may in time be upset. The color of the newly finished amalgam plug, is perhaps Less objectionable than that of any other metallic filling; if one can be fair and ignore the popular predilection for the material which has so long endured the onslaught of innovating competitors, and which we may still denominate the "old reliable." But before passing the subject, there are other preparations to which a word is due. Hill's Stopping, and like preparations, embodying a large proportion of gutta percha, are anions the most valuable and indispensible agents, in operations upon carious teeth.
