Book Regolith Exploration Geochemistry in Tropical and Subtropical Terrains

Download or read book Regolith Exploration Geochemistry in Tropical and Subtropical Terrains written by C.R.M. Butt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of exploration geochemistry has increased enormously in the last decade. The present volume specifically addresses those geochemical exploration practices appropriate for tropical, sub-tropical and adjacent areas – in environments ranging from rainforest to desert. Practical recommendations are made for the optimization of sampling, and analytical and interpretational procedures for exploration according to the particular nature of tropically weathered terrains. The underlying theme is the recognition that regions between 35°N and 35°S in particular have a common history of deep chemical weathering and lateritization during the late Mesozoic and early Tertiary. This has had a profound and lasting effect, so that the surface geochemical expressions of mineralization throughout these regions have many similar features, with local modification due to more recent weathering under changed climates. The volume discusses the data derived from numerous research and case studies in terms of exploration and dispersion models based on the weathering and geomorphological history. The models permit valid comparisons between equivalent terrains that may be geographically widely separated and situated in quite different climatic environments. The basis of the volume is to view geochemical dispersion within the context of a genetic understanding of the evolution of landforms and the regolith (i.e. landscape geochemistry) and to develop exploration procedures based on this understanding. This book should be of interest to exploration geochemists, economic geologists, soil scientists, geomorphologists and environmental geochemists.

Book The Biogeochemical Cycling of Gold Under Surface and Near surface Environmental Conditions

Download or read book The Biogeochemical Cycling of Gold Under Surface and Near surface Environmental Conditions written by Jeremiah P. Shuster and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobility of gold at near-surface environmental conditions, e.g., supergene weathering environments, lateritic weathering systems, saline to hypersaline systems and placer gold environments, takes place as oxidised, soluble gold complexes and as reduced elemental gold. The transformation between aqueous and solid states of gold is attributed to the varying geochemical conditions that occur in dynamic environments that are catalysed in part by the biosphere. The primary focus of this research is the investigation of biogeochemical processes that contribute to the cycling of gold using laboratory models to represent various natural systems including chemolithotrophic bacteria, e.g., iron-oxidising bacteria, and heterotrophic sulphate-reducing bacteria and nitrifying bacteria. Results from these studies demonstrate that bacteria initiate the gold cycle by liberating gold through the chemical weathering of gold-bearing minerals. Through oxidative-complexation, soluble gold complexes, e.g., gold (I) thiosulphate and gold (III) chloride, could be produced; however, destabilisation of these gold complexes coupled with bioprecipitation and biomineralisation can immobilise gold thereby completing the cycle. Since the biosphere has an influence on the geochemical conditions of natural environments, the duration of the mobility of gold as soluble complexes is finite and represents a brief snap shot of gold's occurrence. Therefore under surface and near-surface environmental conditions gold will predominantly occur as secondary gold. Secondary gold occurs as nanometre-size to micrometre-size colloids, octahedral platelets, euhedral crystals and bacteriomorphic structures. Furthermore, when bacteria develop as a structurally cohesive biofilms, reduction and enrichment of gold can occur and produce macroscopic gold structures including foils, grains and nuggets. Therefore, bacteria can have a profound effect on the occurrence of gold in natural environments as long as nutrients necessary for microbial metabolism are sustained and gold is in the system. The direct and indirect biogenic effects on gold biogeochemistry will persist over geological time forming observed anomalous gold concentrations such as nugget formations and supergene gold enrichment. Characterising the morphology of gold grains and nuggets in association with understanding how biogeochemical conditions contribute to gold immobilisation is important for gold exploration as it has practical application in mineral vectoring.

Book Sustainable and Economic Waste Management

Download or read book Sustainable and Economic Waste Management written by Hossain Md Anawar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles research findings directly related to sustainable and economic waste management and resource recovery. Mining wastes and municipal, urban, domestic, industrial and agricultural wastes and effluents—which contain persistent organic contaminants, nanoparticle organic chemicals, nutrients, energy, organic materials, heavy metal, rare earth elements, iron, steel, bauxite, coal and other valuable materials—are significantly responsible for environmental contamination. These low-tenor raw materials, if recycled, can significantly address the demand–supply chain mismatch and process sustainability as a whole while simultaneously decreasing their impacts on human life and biodiversity. This book summarises the large volume of current research in the realm of waste management and resource recovery, which has led to innovation and commercialisation of sustainable and economic waste management for improved environmental safety and improved economics. Key Features: Reviews the key research findings related to sustainable and economic resource recovery and waste management techniques Discusses minimizing waste materials and environmental contaminants with a focus on recovering valuable resources from wastes Examines the potential uses of mining waste in the re-extraction of metals, provision of fuel for power plants, and as a supply of other valuable materials for utilisation/processing Presents research on recycling of municipal, urban, domestic, industrial and agricultural wastes and wastewater in the production and recovery of energy, biogas, fertilizers, organic materials and nutrients Outlines topical research interests resulting in patents and inventions for sustainable and economic waste management techniques and environmental safety

Book Reactions of Gold iii Complexes with Alkenes in Aqueous Solution

Download or read book Reactions of Gold iii Complexes with Alkenes in Aqueous Solution written by Chad Rezsnyak and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, the chemistry of gold has been underappreciated due to its inert and noble nature. Recently, investigations of the chemical properties of gold complexes have undergone a renaissance, due largely to its activity as a catalyst for organic reactions involving unsaturated substrates. This manuscript describes experiments undertaken to aid in establishing the fundamental aspects of gold-alkene reactions in an aqueous environment. A brief overview of gold chemistry (focusing mainly on the +3 oxidation state) and the reactions of gold(III) complexes with simple, unactivated alkenes in solution is presented.

Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.
