Book Music in the British Provinces 1690 1914

Download or read book Music in the British Provinces 1690 1914 written by Rachel Cowgill and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period 1700-1900, roughly from Purcell to Elgar, has traditionally been seen as a dark age in British musical history, while research into British music of the period has tended to concentrate on London. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that by 1750 Britain had a highly distinctive musical culture, in terms of its reach, the way it was organised, and its size, richness and quality. This is the first book to concentrate specifically on musical life in the provinces, bringing together new archival research and offering a fresh perspective on British music of the period.

Book Music and Theatre in Handel s World

Download or read book Music and Theatre in Handel s World written by Donald Burrows and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 1268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Harris (1709-80) was an author of philosophical treatises and an enthusiastic amateur musician who directed the concerts and music festivals at Salisbury for nearly fifty years. His family and social circle had close connections with London's music-making: his brother was a witness toHandel's will, and his correspondents sent him lively reports on all aspects of musical life in the capital-opera, oratorio, concerts, but also about the leading performers, music copyists, and instrument makers. In 1761 Harris became a member of Parliament and thereafter divided his time betweenLondon and Salisbury. His letters and diaries provide an unrivalled record of concert- and theatre-going in London, including exchanges of letters with David Garrick about a production at Drury Lane. As his children grew up an engaging family correspondence emerged. We learn of his daughters'involvement in concerts and amateur theatrical productions; his son, who pursued a diplomatic career, reported on operas, concerts, and plays in the court of Frederick the Great and Catherine the Great. Now, for the first time, it is possible to enjoy in full the lively first-hand descriptions fromHarris's family papers, which contribute fascinating insights into contemporary eighteenth-century musical and theatrical life.

' - The Sphere At 3 p.m. on the 13th February, a huge army of soldiers swept into the remote Highland Valley of Glencoe, a stronghold of the MacDonald clan. The Master of the Stair sent them there. Cruel and ambitious, he did not shrink from mass murder to satisfy his lust for power. Jock Campbell led them. At last his chance had come to rid Scotland of his old enemies and reign supreme in the Highlands. Delia tried to stop them. A beautiful Jacobite spy, she risked her life to warn the MacDonalds and save the man she loved. Fighting against time and the evil madness or her opponents, Delia plotted secretly to avert the threatened tragedy. The Glen O'Weeping is a passionate historical romance from a master of the genre. Praise for Marjorie Bowen 'A book remarkable alike for its vividness and for its historical perspective' - Daily Express '... one of the most novel features of Miss Bowen's book is the care she takes to see the point of view of Mary's lovers. She makes a plausible case for Bothwell and even joins the very select band of those who have something good to say for Darnley' - Times Literary Supplement 'Fresh, vivid, exciting and enthralling ... This is a fine book' - The Sphere 'A book in every way worthwhile ... as an individual contribution to the subject, Miss Bowen's work is of the exceptional class' - The Scotman Marjorie Bowen was born in 1885 and is one of many pseudonyms the writer Margaret Gabrielle Vere Campbell Long used. She was one of Britain's most prolific authors of the twentieth century. Writing was more than just a hobby: her works were the primary source of financial support for her family. Between 1906 and her death in 1952, Bowen wrote over 150 books, garnering much acclaim for her popular histories and historical and Gothic romances. Alongside masterful descriptions and concise, efficient prose, she deftly rendered larger-than-life subjects in the minds of her readers. To this day, aficionados of the genres covet Bowen's work. Her other titles include The Sword Decided, Mary Queen of Scots, The Queen's Caprice, The Governor of England, Mistress Nell Gwynn and Dickon. Book Volume II The Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Volume II The Eighteenth Century written by P. J. Marshall and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1998-05-28 with total page 1063 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume II of the Oxford History of the British Empire examines the history of British worldwide expansion from the Glorious Revolution of 1689 to the end of the Napoleonic Wars, a crucial phase in the creation of the modern British Empire. This is the age of General Wolfe, Clive of India, and Captain Cook. The international team of experts deploy the latest scholarly research to trace and analyse development and expansion over more than a century. They show how trade, warfare, and migration created an Empire, at first overwhelmingly in the Americas but later increasingly in Asia. Although the Empire was ruptured by the American Revolution, it survived and grew into the British Empire that was to dominate the world during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. series blurb The Oxford History of the British Empire is a major new assessment of the Empire in the light of recent scholarship and the progressive opening of historical records. It deals with the interaction of British and non-western societies from the Elizabethan era to the late twentieth century, aiming to provide a balanced treatment of the ruled as well as the rulers, and to take into account the significance of the Empire for the peoples of the British Isles. It explores economic and social trends as well as political.

Book Music Making in North East England during the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Music Making in North East England during the Eighteenth Century written by Roz Southey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The north-east of England in the eighteenth century was a region where many different kinds of musical activity thrived and where a wide range of documentation survives. Such activities included concert-giving, teaching, tuning and composition, as well as music in the theatre and in church. Dr Roz Southey examines the impulses behind such activities and the meanings that local people found inherent in them. It is evident that music could be perceived or utilized for extremely diverse purposes; as entertainment, as a learned art, as an aid to piety, as a profession, a social facilitator and a support to patriotism and nationalism. Musical societies were established throughout the century, and Southey illustrates the social make-up of the members, as well as the role of Gentlemen Amateurs in the organizing of concerts, and the connections with London and other centres. The book draws upon a rich selection of source material, including local newspapers, council and ecclesiastical records, private papers and diaries and accounts of local tradesman, as well as surviving examples of music composed in the area by Charles Avison, Thomas Ebdon and John Garth of Durham, amongst many others. Charles Avison's importance is focused upon particularly, and his Essay on Musical Expression is considered alongside other contemporary writings of lesser fame. Southey provides a fascinating insight into the type and social class of audiences and their influence on the repertoire performed. The book moves from a consideration of music being used as a 'fashion item', evidenced by the patronage of 'big name' soloists from London and abroad, to fiddlers, ballad singers, music at weddings, funerals, public celebrations, and music for marking the events of the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary Wars. It can be seen, therefore, that the north east was an area of important musical activity, and that the music was always interwoven into the political, economic, religious and commercial fabric of eighteenth-century life.
