Book The Annals of the English Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Annals of the English Bible Classic Reprint written by Christopher Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annals of the English Bible In the literature of this country, although it has been so often felt and regretted, a more observable deficiency does not exist, than that of there being no history of the English Bible. It may have been imagined, that such a narrative could embrace no heart-stirring incidents, or incidents laid as the foundation of a great design, no frequent peril of life, no hairbreadth escapes, nor, especially, any of those transactions in which the vital interests of this nation have been involved. No mistake could have been greater, but whatever has been the cause, the defect is notorious. The Sacred Volume, indeed, carries internal evidence of its divine origin, and that in abundance; but still, with reference to the Bible now being used daily, no questions can be more natural than these - When was this volume first translated from the original, and put into print? Who was the man that labored night and day to accomplish this? Like his Divine Master, was he betrayed unto death? If so, who betrayed him? What became of his betrayers? Or, was there any one man who befriended him, in his last days, or final trial? And since all this, and much more, did take place abroad; in the first transmission, in the secret and singular conveyance of the heavenly treasure to our shores, what were the distinct tokens of a superintending Providence to be observed and adored? What were the notable circumstances connected with its earliest triumphs over the prejudice and passion of our common nature? Or, in short, how has this Sacred Volume, revised, and re-revised, after three hundred years, come down into our hands? And yet, up to the present moment, should any individual apply to his Christian teacher, or any child to his Parent, and put these and other deeply-interesting questions, no definite answer can be returned; nor is there a single publication, which, if it lead not astray, will not leave the inquisitive reader nearly as far from satisfaction as when he began. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annals of the English Bible, Vol. 1 Certain portentous signs, unexpectedly marking our own day, and at which not a few have been startled, very power fully invite the general mind to the sacred text, in its all sufficiency, by itself alone, or to the Bible without note and comment. But without even glancing at these here, to the Sacred Volume, in our native tongue, considered simply in the light of a printed book, there happily belong two pecu liarities, more than sufficient to fix the mind, with intense interest, on its origin and history. These are the number of its copies, and the extent to which it is now in perusal. Neither the one, nor the other, has yet been rendered so pal pahle, as to engage the notice they deserve, and which they will, at last, certainly secure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the Old Testament Nearly all Old Testament scholars in Germany, England, and America, who have been trained in the universities and are not adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, are agreed as to the main results which have been achieved by careful investigations carried on during the nineteenth century, though there are necessarily differences of opinion upon secondary details. It is important that the reader should realise the immense gulf which separates the modern physical conditions of book-making, since the discovery of printing, from the ancient conditions when all records were laboriously copied by hand upon such rough materials as skins or papyrus and were preserved in rolls. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annals of England; An Epitome of English History, Vol. 3: From Contemporary Writers, the Rolls of Parliament, and Other Public Records This remarkable man, born at Huntingdon, April 25, 1599, was the son of Robert Cromwell, and the grandson of Sir Henry Williams (or Cromwell), of Hinchinbrook, who claimed descent from the ancient princes of Wales. Oliver was in 1616 sent to Sydney Sussex College, Cambridge, and subsequently professed to study the law in London, but was not distinguished for orderly conduct or application in either. He soon retired to the country, and married; obtained, by bequest from an uncle, a considerable addition to his property, and held largely as a lessee from the bishop of Ely. He had now become a Puritan, but was named a justice of the peace for his native town in a new charter granted in 1630. He was member for Huntingdon in the first three parliaments of Charles I., and was a person of sufficient consequence to greatly impede the drainage of the Fen district, which had been granted to the earl of Bedford, with powers which were generally regarded as too extensive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronicles: Edited, With an Introduction and Notes The greatest interest in the present volume will perhaps be in that part which goes over the ground already trav ersed by the history of Tne Kings. There can be few better exercises in the study of historic literature than to compare these two divisions of Bible history, alike in their treatment Of the same incident, and again in the general historic perspective which may be traced through lengthy portions of narrative. An incident that is necessarily prominent in both works is David's bringing of the Ark to Jerusalem, the ceremony by which was inaugurated the metropolis of Jehovah's monarchy. I proceed to indicate in parallel columns the two treatments of a common theme. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of Chronicles: With Maps, Notes and Introduction The present General Editor for the Old Testament in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpretations adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement with one another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Bible Society: From Its Organization to the Present Time The necessity of some such work as the following was suggested to the mind of the author when he entered upon his duties as agent of the American Bible Society several years since. He found the field of labor in which he had engaged one concerning the nature of which he knew but little. To obtain such information as would qualify him for his work, it therefore became necessary for him to study the policy and operations of the society, as contained in the printed reports, circulars, and letters of instruction issued from the Board from time to time, and embracing a period of many years. He found that, to give a full and intelligible answer in regard to almost any important topic connected with the society, the whole field of its operations must be searched, and the scattered fragments lying here and there must be gathered up and arranged. In the preparation of each of the thirty-nine chapters, with but few exceptions, the writer has traveled over the entire ground every time, collecting from the reports and collateral documents every important fact connected therewith. Book The Classical Journal Vol 3

Download or read book The Classical Journal Vol 3 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Classical Journal, Vol. 3: For March and June, 1811 It is to be remarked, that the learned author does not seem to establish the correctness of these instances, on the ground of any peculiar idiom of the English tongue. He refers, for their justi fication, to the nature and sense of the phrases. He approves of the use of the subjunctive mood on these occasions, upon principles of universal grammar - upon the supposition of some philosophical propriety. These instances are collected from the vulgar translation of the bible; and it may excite some Surprize to be told, that not one of these examples is expressed in the subjunctive mood in the languages, from which they are translated. A reference to the originals will clearly establish this singular fact. The only author within my knowledge who has noticed this curious inadvertence (for such it certainly is) of the learned Bishop, is Mr. Webster.' In his Dissertations on the English Language, he has fully investigated these examples, by a collation with their originals. Such is the unstable foun dation, on which some of our most eminent grammarians have rested their conclusions on this subject. But so discordant are the notions of the very advocates of the English moods, that few of them agree even on the number of them; and as to the particular mood in'question, the most vague and inconsistent doctrines have prevailed. Some persons have thought it to consist in the adoption of the plural form of the verb, without regard to the persons, whether singular or plural, to whom it relates, when it is preceded by particular con junctions. Others consider it to be a mere second form of the verb, to be used after certain conjunctions, but hesitate to exalt it to the dignity of a nominal mood. Many, who denominate this form of expression an actual mood, limit its existence to one tense; while others extend it to various tenses. Such vagueness and indecision can only be the result of speculation: attempts to define a nonentity naturally terminate in confusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Our Ancestors: One Hundred and Fifty Years of History in the Watkins Family Bible, written with a quill pen by some ancestor who long ago passed on from sight. What memories come to me, their granddaughter, on this one hundredth anniversary ofthe birth of their son and our father, Benjamin Watkins! I am happy, in beginning this history of our family, to pay a tribute to so worthy an ancestor, and I feel as I write that we have just cause to be proud of the root from which this present family sprang. James Watkins was born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey, in the reign of our then Sovereign Lord, King George III, on Saturday, July 30, 1768. His father, Joseph Watkins, was of English descent, and his name would mark him as of Welsh origin. It seems little that we know of him, and yet we do possess some authentic information concerning this ancestor. He was a mechanic of Elizabethtown before the Revolution, and once owned a sailboat plying between a port in New Jersey and New York City. He lost all his property in the collapse of Revolutionary currency. He married Elizabeth Spinning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
