Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their beloved parents long passed away, the beautiful Angela Brooke and her brother Trevor are penniless and the upkeep of the dilapidated family Priory is all but impossible to manage. Then one day Trevor returns from London with an exciting plan, a chance for Angela to earn the princely sum of one thousand pounds, which is more than enough to solve their financial problems just by playing ‘make-believe’ for a very short time. The legendary George Edwardes, the impresario behind the famous and glamorous Gaiety Girls and the shows at London’s Gaiety Theatre has promised that the Gaiety Girls will appear in an exclusive show at the Marquis of Vauxhall’s own private theatre. The trouble is that the star of his play based on The Rake’s Progress, which the Marquis himself has written to entertain his guests, has been taken ill and, afraid to disappoint the Marquis, George Edwardes is desperate for another angelic beauty to take her place. Who better, Trevor argues, than Angela, who was so named for her angelic appearance. And so, with great trepidation, Angela arrives at the stately home of the handsome and haughty Marquis where, uncharacteristically made up to look like a wanton Gaiety Girl, she attracts the unwanted attention of the Marquis’s gentlemen-friends. But soon her angelic beauty, her excellent equestrian skills and her gentleness with his young daughter pique the curiosity of her host. And soon he is utterly smitten.

Book excerpt: Since their adored father, Lord Shenley, passed away, the beautiful young Kyla Shenley and her little brother, Terry, have no one to care for them except for their despised stepmother, Sybil, who has already taken a lover and is plotting to get her greedy hands on the children’s large inheritance. When Kyla overhears her plans to ensure that young Terry has a ‘fatal accident’ and to drug Kyla and hand her over to a ghastly old man called ‘Lord Frome’ to face a life of debauchery, she sees no alternative but for them both to flee as far away as possible from their appalling stepmother. Heading for Lilliecote Castle and their beloved Nanny who works there for the Earl of Granston, they are accosted by a highwayman in a wood, but he turns out to be a particularly nice ‘gentleman of the road’, who demands only one of their sandwiches and even offers his protection should they find themselves in dire straits. When they arrive at The Castle, Nanny suggests that the Master, the Earl of Granston, should not be aware of their identities in case their wicked stepmother comes there seeking them. And, passing off Kyla as a new Governess to the Earl’s young niece, Jane, Nanny shows them how to hide in The Castle’s ancient secret passages and Priests’ Holes. But, as the handsome and authoritative Earl takes them under his wing, he suspects that there is more to the lovely Kyla than meets the eye. So eventually it is he, together with their highwayman friend, who defeats the Wicked Widow and her gang of evil accomplices in a terrifying battle in which the Earl wins Kyla’s heart and soul.

Download or read book Migrating Tales written by Richard Kalmin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migrating Tales situates the Babylonian Talmud, or Bavli, in its cultural context by reading several rich rabbinic stories against the background of Greek, Syriac, Arabic, Persian, and Mesopotamian literature of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, much of it Christian in origin. In this nuanced work, Richard Kalmin argues that non-Jewish literature deriving from the eastern Roman provinces is a crucially important key to interpreting Babylonian rabbinic literature, to a degree unimagined by earlier scholars. Kalmin demonstrates the extent to which rabbinic Babylonia was part of the Mediterranean world of late antiquity and part of the emerging but never fully realized cultural unity forming during this period in Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia, and western Persia. Kalmin recognizes that the Bavli contains remarkable diversity, incorporating motifs derived from the cultures of contemporaneous religious and social groups. Looking closely at the intimate relationship between narratives of the Bavli and of the Christian Roman Empire, Migrating Tales brings the history of Judaism and Jewish culture into the ambit of the ancient world as a whole.
