Book The Anatomy of Meaning

Download or read book The Anatomy of Meaning written by N. J. Enfield and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we understand what others are trying to say? The answer cannot be found in language alone. Words are linked to hand gestures and other visible phenomena to create unified 'composite utterances'. In this book N. J. Enfield presents original case studies of speech-with-gesture based on fieldwork carried out with speakers of Lao (a language of Southeast Asia). He examines pointing gestures (including lip and finger-pointing) and illustrative gestures (examples include depicting fish traps and tracing kinship relations). His detailed analyses focus on the 'semiotic unification' problem, that is, how to make a single interpretation when multiple signs occur together. Enfield's arguments have implications for all branches of science with a stake in meaning and its place in human social life. The book will appeal to all researchers interested in the study of meaning, including linguists, anthropologists, and psychologists.

Book excerpt: The intent of my book is to assist writers of all ages and levels of expertise in improving their skills in discovering the attributes of successful paragraph construction with an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of writing award-winning essays. The most critical component of competitive success is the ability to translate an idea into a comprehensive written report. The MEALS (Main point, Evidence, Analysis, Logic, and synonym), an acronym, is a tool designed to act as a guide to promote ease and excellence in writing endeavors. During his graduate work, Dr. Elsayess developed a new tool with the acronym MEALS. The MEALS method could assist while creating written works to earn a degree. In addition, using this method could allow students to move ahead with a good competency level for writing. Dr. Elsayess utilized the MEALS tool for assessing his students and developing his book. Not only did Lovitts (2007) report a high rate of unacceptable dissertations would lead to university dropout, but also, Lovitts (2007) reported that the Council of Graduate Schools indicated that “a 50% student dropout rate, writing the dissertation reported as the major stumbling block.” Reference: Lovitts, B. E. (2007). Making the implicit explicit: Creating performance expectations for the dissertation. Stylus Publishing, LLC

Book The Anatomy of Change

Download or read book The Anatomy of Change written by Steen Scheuer and published by Copenhagen Business School Press DK. This book was released on 2008 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization, the new economy, and the IT revolution are some of the words used when researchers - as well as practitioners - try to explain the seemingly ever-increasing speed of change in contemporary society. Whatever the label, organizations today are facing change in a host of different ways. Sometimes they act as "change-takers," forced to adapt to changes and innovations coming from the outside. At other times they are "change-makers," who foster innovation and change, giving them a competitive advantage or a heightened legitimacy. Sometimes they force others to adapt to these changes. The analyses presented in this volume provide ample evidence of how the perspective of new institutionalism can help in understanding the anatomy of change, and how some actors avoid complete stasis through utilizing small openings instead of breaking down the whole wall.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÒPaints in chilling detail the distance between Martin Luther KingÕs dream and the reality of present-day America.Ó ÑAnthony Walton, HarperÕs ÒIntellectually rigorous and deeply thoughtful...LouryÕs book deals with racial stigma...in its political and philosophical aspects as a cause of black disadvantage...An incisive, erudite book by a major thinker.Ó ÑGerald Early, New York Times Book Review ÒLifts and transforms the discourse on ÔraceÕ and racial justice to an entirely new level.Ó ÑOrlando Patterson ÒHe is a genuine maverick thinker...The Anatomy of Racial Inequality both epitomizes and explains LouryÕs understanding of the depressed conditions of so much of black society today.Ó ÑNew York Times Magazine ÒLoury provides an original and highly persuasive account of how the American racial hierarchy is sustained and reproduced over time. And he then demands that we begin the deep structural reforms that will be necessary to stop its continued reproduction.Ó ÑMichael Walzer Why are Black Americans so persistently confined to the margins of society? And why do they fail across so many metricsÑwages, unemployment, income levels, test scores, incarceration rates, health outcomes? Known for his influential work on the economics of racial inequality and for pioneering the link between racism and social capital, Glenn Loury is not afraid of piercing orthodoxies and coming to controversial conclusions. In this now classic work, he describes how a vicious cycle of tainted social information helped create the racial stereotypes that rationalize and sustain discrimination. Brilliant in its account of how racial classifications are created and perpetuated, and how they resonate through the social, psychological, spiritual, and economic life of the nation, this compelling and passionate book gives us a new way of seeingÑand of seeing beyondÑthe damning categorization of race.

Book Routledge Revivals William Shakespeare The Anatomy of an Enigma 1990

Download or read book Routledge Revivals William Shakespeare The Anatomy of an Enigma 1990 written by P. E. Razzell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, the aim of this book is to reveal the William Shakespeare whose life has been obscured by centuries of literary mythology. It unravels a series of strands in order to understand the man and the major influences which shaped his life and writing. The first part advances the thesis that his relationship with his father directly influenced the character of Falstaff — helping to not only explain key events in his father’s life but also critical events in his own biography. This thesis not only illuminates the Falstaff plays but also a number of other works such as Hamlet. The second part focuses on Shakespeare’s own life, and includes much original research particularly on the tradition that he was a poacher of deer, discussing the influence this incident had on his later life and writings. In addition, a sociological approach has been used which illuminates a number of key areas, including questioning the view his background was narrow and provincial — which has often been used to dispute his authorship of plays of such cosmopolitan appeal.
