Book A Bibliography of William Wordsworth

Download or read book A Bibliography of William Wordsworth written by Mark L. Reed and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 1859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publishing history of William Wordsworth's writings is complex and often obscure. These two volumes set out, for the first time, a comprehensive, detailed bibliographic description of every edition of Wordsworth's writings up to 1930. The great variety of forms in which readers encountered both authorized and unauthorized texts by Wordsworth is revealed, not only as produced during his lifetime but also during the years of his largest sales, popularity and influence, the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The bibliography provides new information about hundreds of printings and their internal and external designs, processes of production, sales, contents and variant texts and illustrations. More than a record of the transmission and reception of Wordsworth and his writings, it offers invaluable new data for the study of British publishing history and the reception and readership of British Romantic literature.

Book Skylark Meets Meadowlark

Download or read book Skylark Meets Meadowlark written by Thomas C. Gannon and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AøNative rereading of both British Romanticism and mainstream Euro-American ecocriticism, this cross-cultural transatlantic study of literary imaginings about birds sets the agenda for a more sophisticated and nuanced ecocriticism. Lakota critic Thomas C. Gannon explores how poets and nature writersøin Britain and Native America have incorporated birds into their writings. He discerns an evolution in humankind?s representations?and attitudes toward?other species by examining the avian images and tropes in British Romantic and Native American literatures, and by considering how such literary treatment succeeds from an ecological or animal-rights perspective. ø Such depictions, Gannon argues, reveal much about underlying cultural and historical relationships with the Other?whether other species or other peoples. He elucidates the changing interconnections between birds and humans in British Romanticism from Cowper to Clare, with particular attention to Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Byron, and Keats. Gannon then considers how birds are imagined by Native writers, including early Lakota authors and contemporary poets such as Linda Hogan and Joy Harjo. Ultimately he shows how the sensitive and far-reaching connections with nature forged by Native American writers encourage a more holistic reimagining of humankind?s relationship to other animals.

Book The Emily Dickinson Collection

Download or read book The Emily Dickinson Collection written by Emily Dickinson and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emily Dickinson Collection (2021) compiles some of the best-known works of an icon of American poetry. Out of nearly two-thousand poems discovered after her death, less than a dozen appeared in print during Dickinson’s lifetime. Drawn from such influential posthumous volumes as Poems (1902) and The Single Hound (1914), The Emily Dickinson Collection captures the spiritual depths, celebratory heights, and impenetrable mystery of Dickinson’s poetic gift. “Fame is a fickle food / Upon a shifting plate, / Whose table once a Guest, but not / The second time, is set.” Deeply aware of the fleeting nature of fame, Dickinson—whose reputation in life was as a lonely eccentric who rarely, if ever, left home—seems to provide some clarity as to why publication so often eluded her. Having published just ten poems in her lifetime, Dickinson continued to write in solitude until her final years. Her final word on fame is a warning, perhaps, for poets whose fate would differ from her own: “Men eat of it and die.” Despite her admonishing tone, she found space elsewhere to muse on the nature of literary achievement, recognizing that obscurity could incidentally produce the conditions for a poet to produce their most vital work: “Success is counted sweetest / By those who ne’er succeed. / To comprehend a nectar / Requires sorest need.” Throughout her life, Emily Dickinson showed a profound respect for the mysteries of worldly existence. In her poems, this creates an atmosphere of prayer and contemplation, a search for something beyond the simple answers: “Some things that fly there be, — / Birds, hours, the bumble-bee: / Of these no elegy.” Amid such fleeting things, she catches a glimpse of eternity. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Emily Dickinson Collection is a classic of American poetry reimagined for modern readers.

"My friends, I must not spoil your dance. Oh, you would not care to see if you only knew what is in my blanket. Sing on! dance on! I must not show you what I carry on my back," answered Iktomi, nudging his own sides with his elbows. This reply broke up the ring entirely. Now all the ducks crowded about Iktomi. "We must see what you carry! We must know what is in your blanket!" they shouted in both his ears. Some even brushed their wings against the mysterious bundle. Nudging himself again, wily Iktomi said, "My friends, 't is only a pack of songs I carry in my blanket." "Oh, then let us hear your songs!" cried the curious ducks. At length Iktomi consented to sing his songs. With delight all the ducks flapped their wings and cried together, "Hoye! hoye!" Iktomi, with great care, laid down his bundle on the ground. "I will build first a round straw house, for I never sing my songs in the open air," said he. Quickly he bent green willow sticks, planting both ends of each pole into[...]".

Book Wordsworth and the Formation of English Studies

Download or read book Wordsworth and the Formation of English Studies written by Ian Reid and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous historical studies of English have not looked closely at the similarities of its development in different cultural settings and educational systems. This book provides a cross-national perspective on attempts to establish, maintain, and modify the discursive practices that constituted English literary studies in universities. Drawing on archival sources, it takes three leading institutions as exemplary sites: Cornell University, in the United States; The University of London, in Britain; and the University of Melbourne, in Australia. places, a persistent genetic identity exists that is best understood as Romantic. More particularly, Wordsworth's writings, and a cluster of ideas, images, and attitudes associated with him, exerted a normative pressure on curriculum and pedagogy during the 19th-century emergence of the university and literature as we know them today. They also provided long afterwards a naturalized set of framing assumptions.
