This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Quarterly Register, 1839, Vol. 11 W: now bring our labors for another year to a close. We have been sus tained by the hope that they are not altogether in vain. Other publications contain many articles which are more immediately interesting than the mass of those which are inserted in the American Quarterly Register. Our object is not so much to entertain the passing hour, as it is to collect and arrange materials for thought which will be permanently useful. Some of the articles inserted in the eleven volumes of our work will be of indispensable importance, we may pre sume to say, my years hence. They have been prepared with an exhausting amount of labor, and in some cases, from sources which are exceedingly rare, and which will soon cease to exist. For instance, our excellent friend and fellow laborer, John Farmer, Esq., who has, during the last year, gone down to the grave, was in the possession of stores of information, with much of which be enriched our pages, that will be sought in vain elsewhere, or at any future time. Invaluable records are frequently lost, or burned, and they inevitably decay in the lapse of time. In rescuing, therefore, some of this perishing information from utter less, we cannot but feel that we are doing good service to our country, and to the churches of our Lord. We interfere with no other publi cation; we come into collision with no class of our fellow men. In the statis tical department of our labor, our concern is not so much with the living, as it is with the pious and venerated dead - with the noble and sainted men, to whom, under God, we owe our inestimable civil and religious institutions. Still no active measures seem to have been taken towards effecting the object, until sometime in the next year, 1823. As it had been put in operation, at first, by Bishop Smith's bringing his private academy into its building, and had once been revived by Dr. Buist's doing the same thing, a similar plan was now naturally thought of. To this end, a negotiation was entered into during the latter part of the year 1823, between the trustees and the Rev. John Dickson, the Rev. Mr. Gilbert and William E. Bailey, Esq.; each of' whom had a flourishing private school or academy in the city. The result of this negotiation was, an agreement that those gentlemen should transfer their schools to the college buildings, and commence operations on the first of January, 1824. To inspire confidence in the plan, Dr. Bowen was elected the principal on the 23d of December, 1823; with the understanding, that he was to give his advice and aid in organizing the institution, but that hejwas to take no active part in the instruction, and was tr; be only a locum tenens, until a competent head of the institution could be 0 tained. Accordingly an overture was made to accept the ofiice, to the Rev. Jasper Adams, then professor of mathematics and natural philosophy in Brown University, Providence, R. I. It was represented to this gentleman, (December 12th, 1823, ) "that there was a college in Charleston, which had been incorporated during many years, and that the board of trustees had always consisted of a portion of the most respectable inhabitants of the city." It was further stated in the same communication, --" its endowment from the State, however, was small; and by bad management has become reduced to...

Download or read book The American Quarterly Register Vol 5 written by B. B. Edwards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Quarterly Register, Vol. 5: August 1832-May 1833 IN forming an estimate of the character of an individual, there are always two classes of influence to be taken into the account. In the first place, the providence and Spirit of God are to be distinctly recognized. Men are not unfrequently placed in such circumstances, that they. Can hardly avoid acting a distinguished part. They came into existence at that very moment when the world was ripe for change. They had only to fall in with a current, which had received its direction long before they were born. Or, perhaps, some slight incident occurred in the early part of their history, which was entirely out of the range of their contrivance, but which essentially modified their whole subsequent course. The fathers of New England, though endued with almost prophetic sagacity, were, notwith standing, deeply indebted to the providence of God. The persecutions which they suffered in England, compelled them to leave it. A spirit of adventure and foreign discovery, had been, for several years, abroad in europe. Coming from a small island, over a wide ocean, and landing on a great continent, they would naturally feel an enlargement of soul. The idea must have been forced upon their minds, that they were to be the parents of a new race, the patriarchs of a new continent. They were also frequently the subjects of remarkable and entirely unforeseen deliverances. It is important to look upon the history and character of men, in this aspect. A main part of our object in reading biography, should be to trace the Operations of the providence of God. If we lose sight of that, we shall certainly be in danger of paying idolatry to a few distinguished names. Ln Washington's character, there was a singularly happy combination Of qualities, which were in part the result of his own effort and self-discipline. Still, God gave to Washington, powers of body and of mind altogether unusual, and placed him in circumstances, where those powers were nur tured and developed. Book The American Quarterly Register 1835 Vol 7 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Quarterly Register, 1835, Vol. 7 Again, an original, Christian literature, in this country, is consistent with a diligent attention to foreign modern literature. Some men imagine that the great object - the acquisition of an American literature - could be ac complished, if we were to prohibit the importation of all books from London - that if we were left to work our own stock, independent of the intellectual warehouses on the other side of the waters, new forms of beauty and grandeur would spring from beneath our wonder-working hands. But is the case thus? Is a literary monopoly, any where, a good thing? Does the fact that we have but a scanty original literature, show that the booksellers in St. Paul's church-yard and Piccadilly are the cause? No: let the gates of knowledge he opened wide into every land. If better books can be made in England than we can make, let us have them. We need the productions of the British press in order to maintain the English language in its purity. It is of inestimable service for us to have reviews there. If any one thinks that we are in no danger, let him read the Biography of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Our best models, what we call thoroughly native American works, were written by men well versed in English literature. Some of the admired' state papers, of the early years of our revolutionary struggle, were written by such men as Wilson and Witherspoon, men who were educated at the British universities. In later days, such writers as Dennie of the Port Folio, Professor Frisbie, and the late Mr. Evarts, were thoroughly con versant with English literature. Our most eminent living statesman now devotes two months out of the twelve to these same studies. Instead, therefore, of decrying the models of taste and genius of past ages, and of other countries, it is our wisdom to study them patiently and thoroughly. This is not slavery. This is no degrading subjection to the models of antiquity, which will cramp our genius. Instead of placing a prohibition on foreign books, would that our presses teemed with the thoughts of Pascal, and of bishop Beveridge, and of Thomas Adam, and of John Howe. It is the borrowers; it is the second rate authors, who complain of the effect of the introduction of English books - men who draw their resources from the shallows and flats of Alison and Hugh Blair, and never come within reach of the gigantic shadows of John Howe and of Joseph Butler.
