Book The American Public and the Motion Picture Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Public and the Motion Picture Classic Reprint written by Charles A. McMahon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Public and the Motion Picture It would be interesting, if space permitted, to chronicle the various steps in the evolution of the motion picture business, which in a little more than a quarter of a century has developed from the penny arcade stage to a place in the forefront of American industries. Complain as we may about the men who dominated the screen in its incipiency - and it is true that some of them were fur pedlars, clothes spongers, cloak merchants and men of kindred callings - we must give them credit for their astute ness in seizing upon the motion picture as an instru ment of gain, and for developing its commercial possibilities to the extent that we find to-day. Keen business sense, unbounded faith and untiring energy is the brief answer to the commercial development of the motion picture business, which is to-day as fully stabilized, as intelligently directed and as capably captained as any of the leading American industries. The commercial rating of the motion picture in industry is in dispute. One estimate, in terms of actual turn over, places it in the seventh place, pre ceded only by the following: slaughtering and meat packing, petroleum, automobiles, foundry and ma chine shops, steel works and rolling mills, and cotton goods. Other bases of figuring would give it a higher or lower rating. The following data on the economic side of the business are illuminating. The invest ment in American films stands to-day at more than the number of persons permanently employed in the industry is in excess of last year feet of American film went into foreign trade, representing between 80 per cent. And 90 per cent. Of the film product exhibited abroad. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Selected Films for American History and Problems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selected Films for American History and Problems Classic Reprint written by William H. Hartley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Films for American History and Problems This handbook grows out of the irritations which accompanied fourteen years of searching for classroom films suited to specific teaching situations. Time after time the writer has ordered a film which, according to the title or producer's description, seemed the answer to a schoolteacher's prayer. All too often it turned out to be either useless drivel or fine material utterly unrelated to the subject at hand. The problem, therefore, was to find film descriptions which were reasonably complete and honest, which included an evaluation of the material presented, and which contained suggestions concerning the phase of the school curriculum which the film best illustrated. This handbook undertakes to furnish such information to the teachers of American history, problems of democracy, civics, geography, economics, and fusion courses in the social studies. The first three chapters give directions for obtaining, evaluating, and using educational films. Little claim is made for originality in much of this material, for it is largely based upon the researches of others. What has been attempted is to bring this material together and apply the findings to the social studies. Many of the problems dealt with in these chapters are still unsolved. The best available information has been given in the hope that it may stimulate further investigations in these areas. During the past two years the writer has seen and evaluated over six hundred social studies films. The second half of the handbook is a catalogue containing reviews and evaluations of such of these films as possess definite value in illustrating some phase of American civilization. Each film was evaluated by the writer serving either alone or in collaboration with committees composed of teachers and pupils. About one third of the films finally included in the handbook were evaluated in classes actively engaged in studying the subjects illustrated by the films. Book Survey of Progress and Trends in the New Era of Motion Picture Entertainment

Download or read book Survey of Progress and Trends in the New Era of Motion Picture Entertainment written by Will H. Hays and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survey of Progress and Trends in the New Era of Motion Picture Entertainment: Annual Report to the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, Inc., March 30, 1936 While the industry on its own behalf must continue to talk with pictures, not words, the record of critical and public opinion with regard to current motion pictures should greatly encourage those who see even larger prospects ahead. Conclusions reached by competent critics and by commentators of the leading organs of the press in all parts of the country are to the effect that there is more intellectual distinction in the movies than ever before that the screen has trans lated into celluloid drama the greatest number of established classics in the history of motion pictures; that the new productions haveexceeded optimistic hopes that pictures of historical on the increase; that the screen has shown its ability to portray the highest concepts of the human mind; that pictures are finer, more interesting, more entertaining and more educational than ever before; that honest and compelling themes are predominating in the outstanding pictures; that more meaning and dignity has been lent to the screen and that the industry is perform ing a great experiment that will help to determine whether the screen is the universal entertainment medium for the expression of the highest forms of art and drama. Such tributes to the progress of the art are perhaps all the more striking because of the fact that the period under review marked only the ninth anniversary of the first talking motion picture. Sound was a revolutionary development which gave birth practically to a new art form, made necessary the development of new techniques of produc tion, the finding and training of many new artists, the creation or discovery of new source material, the need of great new investments for technical facilities, and the creation of self-regulatory measures to cope with the new problems which the addition of speech to motion brought to the social aspects of motion picture entertainment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Cinematographer, Vol. 17: A Technical and Educational Publication of Motion Picture Photography; November, 1936 It is natural, that if one can secure the right exposure reading he can also secure the right lighting balance with the use of these instruments. L have had a number of cases where it was absolutely essential to balance lights, because of freak conditions, by the meter. This holds true whether you are working on exteriors or interi ors. Let's say you have a reading of f:3.5 on one portion of the set; your people read f:2 and some of the light bits of decoration go as high as f:5.6. It's a simple mat ter with the meter to change lights until you secure the proper balance, or if you are looking for high lights and shadows to work them out correctly with the meter.
