Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Legion Monthly, Vol. 5: August 1928 At noon of the first day they were through the defense system, and were going through comparatively untouched country, with only here and there a pill-box or a strip of wire to impede their progress. At one o'clock they received orders to hold up their triumphant progress for awhile until the division on their left could catch up. Their flank was beginning to wave in air, un protected, for a dangerously long distance. This not only exposed them to attacks from that direction, but the artillery of the slower division would be firing into them. The division halted impatiently, reformed, evacuated its wounded, replenished ammunition supply, and ate its emergency rations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Legion Monthly, Vol. 5: July, 1928 The captured man, sober, made no defense, admitting every thing and asking no clemency. He proved a model prisoner. No complaints, no requests, no annoy auces. Mum John, the jailer dubbed him. He ate, slept, kept his cell clean. In going to the white man's college, he had separated from his people. He was single; no relatives came to see him; he asked to see no one. N 0 mail was sent him. He wrote no letters. The sentence made a stir.in Branding Iron, and beyond. Throughout Yucca and neighboring counties, out into the border States and farther, waxed and spread this singular topic for comment and conjecture. It engaged men in ranch, street and office; enlivened church socials and sewing circles. What would a woman sherifi do with a hanging on her hands? What was the sheriff of Yucca going to do in the circumstances? To Mrs. Bayne, thinking it out, opinion and advice poured in from many sources. Women called singly, in pairs and in groups to offer sympathy and suggestion, nursing their curiosity. Telephone calls, letters from various parts of the county and from outside - some containing resolutions adopted by societies of one kind or another - the glances of acquaintances as she walked about the town, the turning of heads to gaze at her when she passed strangers, all spoke the state of the public mind. A hanging was in itself nothing so very unusual in Branding Iron, Abner Bayne having personally con ducted several in his long service as sheriff before his marriage; but the coming one was attended by rare accompaniments. Download or read book The American Legion Monthly Vol 5 written by American Legion National Headquarters and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Legion Monthly, Vol. 5: November, 1928 I had seen photographs and etch ings of skyscrapers before I came to America. I had always had Ameri can friends, and they were willing to describe their country. But I was determined to enter the country by New York in order to see the wonderful harbor and sea-front of which I had heard so much. The last I saw of Eng land were the white cliffs of the Isle of Wight on a September day, when yachts revolved about the ship like great white moths. Then no more land until the entry into New York Harbor at about six o'clock in the evening. I missed the Statue of Liberty on that occasion, although I have seen it since. I was busy below, doing the last bits of frantic packing. New York, when at last I came on deck, loomed before me through a deep blue haze like an enchanted city. The dim forms of the skyscrapers shot grace fully up into the sky, starred all the way up by their innumerable lighted windows. The sight gave me that odd sensation that all moving experiences give, of sudden rediscovered familiarity. I felt that I had known it all my life, but that it had been hidden deep in my subconscious mind. I felt then that America was going to come up to my highest expectations. In my childhood, I had not at first realized that my American friends belonged to another country and another flag. They spoke the same language, and I supposed, with a child's simplicity, that they sprang from the same background as myself and inherited the same traditions. Only when these friends, small boys and girls, disappeared for long periods did I learn that they had gone back to their own country, a great and strange and magnificent place called America, such a long way off that they could only go there for a long time or not at all.
