Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Horticulture and Florist's Companion, 1868, Vol. 4 Year by year, the forests in our country are being stripped off, exposing the hills and plains more and more to the fierce, sweeping winds of winter. Springs and brooks have disappeared because of this wholesale destruction of the forests; and trees that were formerly hardy, and produced uniformly good crops, now fail altogether. The peach, that formerly gave in the New-England States a crop almost every year, now fails two years out of three: while the tree is often badly injured by the winter. The same maybe said of other fruit-trees, as well as of ornamental trees, shrubs, and grape-vines. The winter that has just passed has been a peculiarly unfavorable one. From all quarters, we hear complaints that hedges of arborvitæ, hemlock, and other plants, have been badly injured; that standard evergreens which had stood successfully for years have been nearly destroyed; that grapevines in large numbers, and even of those varieties that have been considered perfectly hardy, have been killed; that pear-trees in large numbers have either been killed outright, or so injured that they will bear no fruit, and require a year or two to recuperate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Horticulture and Florist's Companion, 1867, Vol. 2 Not very long ago, there was in a certain horticultural paper a notice, "Never stake a Ira;" which, in my opinion, deserves to be quoted at par with the famous system of "puddling; " that is, making a liquid puddle in the hole in which the tree is to be planted, and sticking the tree therein. Can people be serious in advocating such a system ? I always thought that the preparation of soil or earth, in about the way used by "puddlers," belonged more to the brickmaker's or pottery line of business than to gardening; although sometimes a gardener may have to perform the operation with clay and water, to mend an oven or a flue in a greenhouse: but no one can seriously believe in planting trees on that principle. In dry weather, trees may be planted with success after having had their roots placed in a puddle: but the holes will have to be filled with a soil rather dry than too wet; and, even then, watering ought to be done with some care, so as not to consolidate the soil. The difficulty of establishing practical rules, that would he universal in their nature, or uniformly successful, arises in part from the varied action of the agents of vegetation, and the almost infinite degrees of their individual modifications under varied circumstances, such as are dependent upon soils and climates, moisture and aridity, heat and cold. No rules can be given that will he of equal force or application in every case; the practice perfectly adapted to one soil and situation would be altogether unsuited to another if differently circumstanced. One thing, however, is certain - that all successful practice is based upon the laws or principles that govern vegetable growth; and all successful results, no matter how contradictory their origin may appear to be, are capable of being referred to the same unvarying principles, could we hut trace their progress through all stages of development. In view, therefore, of the many apparently conflicting opinions which must necessarily be given in the enunciation of merely practical rules (and which may he either right or wrong, according to existing peculiarities), it becomes a question of some importance, and one well worthy of serious consideration by all who are interested in the welfare and efficiency of horticultural literature, whether more real progress in the spread of useful knowledge would not follow the promulgation of principles only, thus enabling every person to deduce a practice suited to the conditions by which lie is surrounded, instead of publishing the thousand and one minute routine details of as many individuals, alt varied as to certain peculiarities of time, place, and season ; at the same time producing precisely the same, or very similar results.
