Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Engineers in France This book is not intended to be a history or detailed account of the work done by American Engineers in France. Their work was so extensive and so varied as to put the writing of its record beyond the powers of one man, for none could know it all. It is hoped that some day the record will be properly set forth in justice to the men and for the honor of the profession, but it will be of necessity the joint product of several collaborating authors. The first contribution that America made to the Allied cause was the raising of nine regiments of engineers, with one of which the author served. It is their work that is the motif of this book. In the writing, it has been necessary to touch on all the fields of engineer activity, because these regiments came in contact with every field, even if they did not invade each one, from constructing ports to digging and holding trenches, in all parts of France from the Atlantic to the Vosges, from the Mediterranean to Flanders. Consequently there results a brief outline of what all engineers did. Perhaps, it may serve to give those who did not go overseas a picture of what is meant by engineering in modern war. There will not be found any description of spectacular or dazzling pieces of construction like so many structures in civil works that arouse admiration. There was none such. Military engineering consists in doing things in the simplest and quickest way, where permanency in character and accuracy in execution yield to the imperious demands for results that are immediately available regardless of all other considerations. Book American Engineers Behind the Battle Lines in France Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Engineers Behind the Battle Lines in France Classic Reprint written by Robert K. Tomlin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Engineers Behind the Battle Lines in France Last December when Mr. Tomlin, formerly managing editor of Engineering News-Record, went to France as war correspondent of the McGraw-Hill engineering publications, he went as a pioneer. No other technical publication in this country was similarly represented at the front, and though he went armed with letters of introduction and the authority of our War Department to get and print whatever the British and French censors deemed proper, there was no certainty that the busy officers directing the great engineering programs would have tune to tell him their stories, or that the censors would permit him to publish them. Mr. Tomlin writes in glowing terms, however, of the full cooperation he has had from officers and censors. Everywhere he has been shown over the work and been given as much information as could be consistently done - and everywhere there has been appreciation of the journalistic need for prompt attention. The first articles, of course, were largely general. The work was just being organized. The first, second and fourth articles are confined to the organization of road building, railway yard and terminal development, and light railway construction, and an outline of some of the problems to be solved, and the third, also in the general preliminary class, relates to the inspection of French quarries by American engineers. In the fifth we first see the engineers actually on construction, in the varied activities of the railway regiment. In the remaining articles, with the exception of that on "Water-supply at the Front in France," which again tells only of the organization and the general problems - we also get details. Besides the views of road building and the light railways at close range, supplementing the first and fourth articles, we have an article on the industrial problems at a shrapnel plant, one on map-making in air and on the ground, one on the construction of an advance depot and two on the work of the army engineer school - which is far in advance of anything of the kind in this country before this year. The articles are here gathered together in book form because of the great interest they have aroused, and the assistance they have rendered army officers engaged in this country in training men for the front. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twentieth Engineers, France, 1917-1918-1919W/hen America entered the war in 1917, one of the first demands of the commander-in-chief was for a regiment of forestry engineers. If an army of the size comtemplated was to be put at the front, docks must be built; railroads laid; barracks, warehouses, hospitals, bakeries, refrigerator plants, and power plants provided; and trench timbers, dug-outs, and barb-wire stakes fur nished. The basic factor in all these necessities was lumber and the Twentieth Engineers, detailed to this task, more than met their tremendous responsibility.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book General Pershing s Story of the American Army in France Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Pershing's Story of the American Army in France After a thorough consideration of allied organizations it was de cided that our combat division should consist of four regiments of infantry of men, with three battalions to a regiment and four companies of 250 men each to a battalion, and of an artillery brigade of three regiments, a machine-gun battalion, an engineer regiment, a trench-mortar battery, a signal battalion, wagon trains, and the head quarters staffs and military police. These, with medical and other units, made a total of over men, or practically double the size of a French or German division. Each corps would normally consist of six divisions - four combat and one depot and one replacement division - and also two regiments of cavalry, and each army of from three to five corps. With four divisions fully trained, a corps could take over an American sector with two divisions in line and two in reserve, with the depot and replacement divisions prepared to fill the gaps in the ranks. F The cartoons exhibited are creations of two of our talented men; the photographs were made by our own photographers, the engravings are a product of our engraver; many stories and saying are of our own origination and in each article or write-up is displayed a characteristic individuality of the writer. The Diary will furnish a chronological record of happenings, and will probably call back to mind many thoughts of scenes in France. We feel that the work we have done has been very essential in this war or movement, for much has depended upon the condition of roads over which motorized and horse-drawn transports could function the better toward the ultimate end. During our sojourn in France, we were in the Zone of Advance, near the Fighting Front, until the signing of the Armistice, and have seen the operations of many of the divisions that were actually engaged in Front-line work. Here we may quote Major Wm. M. Acheson, formerly Division Engineer and Chief of Road Service of the Advance Section of American Army, speaking before the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Major Wm. M. Acheson was formerly Division Engineer and Chief of Road Service of the Advance Section of American Armies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of E Company 37th U. S. Engineers In preparing the summary of our work, I have been impressed with the fact that the men have worked under very severe conditions almost con tinuously since their arrival in France, and if at times too much stress seems to have been placed upon the narration of the dangers undergone, I feel that we should be pardoned. Our story should contain the facts, and we have a just pride in our contribution to the cause. In the years to come we shall be glad to have of record the truth aboutour service, and it has been my one aim to get the facts and deal with them coldly and fairly. If the result is of any value to the men, I shall be more than glad to have had the honor of collecting and recording the information which they themselves have furnished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American in Paris, Vol. 1 of 2 You have no sooner a guinea in London than you have none. In addition to the ways and means I pointed out in my last, gather together the letters I wrote you from Paris, and offer them to the booksellers. There are enough, if you have preserved them, for a volume. Those from London reserve until time has made the necessary additions for volume the second. I had partly the intention, in writing these letters, to dress them up one day into some kind of shape for the Public. I am not certain they are fit to be seen in their present dishabille - but leave that to the purchaser. A pretty woman slip-shod is a pretty woman still, and she is not so much improved as you think by her court dress. Tell the Public I do not mean them for great things: I am no critic, no politician, no political economist; but only, as Shakspeare would say, "a snapper up of inconsiderate trifles." - Under this title I have the honor to be, with the most perfect consideration, the Public's very obedient, humble servant.
