Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a selective collection of Harper’s Weekly woodcut Civil War images appearing during 1861, along with the original descriptions of illustrations. The focus is Warrenton town and Fauquier County Virginia, and beyond. About This Document -- Several years ago, Fauquier resident Paul Mellon kindly gifted a collection of Harper’s Weekly news magazines to the Fauquier Historical Society. They are a great educational source of engraved images highlighting Civil War events published when most newspapers were only words. The images illuminate the story. Harper’s artists were busy making on-scene images for woodcut engravings including many of Warrenton, Fauquier County and nearby environs in Northern Virginia. Warrenton, the county seat, was of military importance as a commercial crossroads including a railroad branch line terminus. It changed occupiers sixty-seven times during the War. It was the hub for Confederate Col. John S Mosby’s partisan raiders who were citizens by day and raiders at night. With daring raids they strategically kept the Union’s Army of the Potomac bottled up in Northern Virginia protecting and repairing supply lines and Washington DC. Fauquier was also home to many enslaved, about 48% of the population at the beginning of the War. The images are in high resolution and were digitally enhanced to give readers, students and researchers clarity.

Book Grant vs Lee

Download or read book Grant vs Lee written by Wayne Vansant and published by Zenith Press. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVGrant vs. Leetells the dramatic story of the final year of the Civil War in Virginia—a bloody and unyielding fight for both sides—through the eyes of the two greatest Civil War generals: the North’s Ulysses S. Grant and the South’s Robert E. Lee. /divDIVThe long and violent campaigns that took place from 1864–1865 (the Overland Campaign, Petersburg Campaign, and Appomattox Campaign) represent the beginning of modern warfare. By this point of the war, both sides employed seasoned and hardened soldiers who looked past the Victorian sensibilities of the gentleman soldier and understood that there would be no falling back. By the end of 1864, both sides built trenches and mounted attacks to break each other’s lines. There was a stalemate that winter. /divDIVGrant’s forces had superior numbers and supplies and by March 1865 they pushed Lee’s army out of the trenches at Petersburg and took Richmond, the Confederate capital. Lee’s dwindling forces retreated west, looking for food and other Southern forces to help continue the fight. After a bitter final battle at Sailor’s Creek, Lee’s army was surrounded by Union forces at Appomattox Court House. On April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered to Grant and the Civil War was over. /divDIVBeautifully illustrated and vastly researched,Grant vs. Leeis a dramatic, illustrated introduction to one of the most pivotal years in American history./div

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Civil War was fought for idealistic American goals such as freedom, states’ rights, and unity. Such ideals notwithstanding, the four-year war (1861–1865) all too often descended into outright butchery, leading to more than 620,000 deaths. Accompanied by battlefield photographs and other primary sources, this chronicle covers all aspects of the war, including the technology and battle plans of both the Union and Confederate armies. As a counterpoint to the usual history of the victors, the final chapter gives a Southern perspective on the war’s causes and legacy.
