Download or read book Bees in America written by Tammy Horn and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2006-04-21 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Integrates history, technology, sociology, economics, and politics with this remarkable insect serving as the unifying concept” (Buffalo News). The tiny, industrious honey bee has become part of popular imagination—reflected in our art, our advertising, even our language itself with such terms as queen bee and busy as a bee. Honey bees—and the values associated with them—have influenced American culture for four centuries. Bees and beekeepers have represented order and stability throughout the changes, challenges, and expansions of a highly diverse country. Bees in America is an enlightening cultural history of bees and beekeeping in the United States. Tammy Horn, herself a beekeeper, offers a social and technological history from the colonial period, when the British first brought bees to the New World, to the present, when bees are being trained by the American military to detect bombs. Horn shows how the honey bee was one of the first symbols of colonization and how bees’ societal structures shaped our ideals about work, family, community, and leisure. This book is both a fascinating read and an “excellent example of the effects agriculture has on history” (Booklist). “A wealth of worthy material.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Top Bar Beekeeping

Download or read book Top Bar Beekeeping written by Les Crowder and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Top-Bar Beekeeping is an offering designed to encourage beekeepers around the world to keep bees naturally by providing beekeeping basics, hive management and the utilization of top-bar hives. In recent years, beekeepers have had to face tremendous challenges, from pests, such as varroa and tracheal mites, to the mysterious but even more devastating phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Yet in backyards and on rooftops all over the world, bees are being raised successfully, even without antibiotics, miticides, or other chemical inputs. More and more organically-minded beekeepers are now using top-bar hives, in which the shape of the interior resembles a hollow log. Long lasting and completely biodegradable, a top-bar hive made of untreated wood allows bees to build comb naturally rather than simply filling prefabricated foundation frames in a typical box hive with added supers. Top-bar hives yield slightly less honey but produce more beeswax than a typical Langstroth box hive. Regular hive inspection and the removal of old combs helps to keep bees healthier and naturally disease-free. Top-Bar Beekeeping provides complete information on hive management and other aspects of using these innovative hives. All home and hobbyist beekeepers who have the time and interest in keeping bees intensively should consider the natural, low-stress methods outlined in this book. It will also appeal to home orchardists, gardeners, and permaculture practitioners who look to bees for pollination as well as honey or beeswax.

Book The American Bee Journal Vol 8

Download or read book The American Bee Journal Vol 8 written by G. S. Wagner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, Vol. 8: 1872-73 The extracted honey we sent to Philadelphia. Our bees did not do much 011 white clover, but when basswood came in bloom (july 15th), the bees kept us busy emptying out honey. \v e were fairly swimming in honey for about two weeks. We 'never saw bees gather honey faster than they did from basswood blossoms. Good swarms would fill their hives in two days when they had empty comb. Now we see the necessity of urging the bee keepers to cultivate the basswood. There is a great quantity of small basswood trees in the woods in this section which we can get to trans plant. Had it not been for basswood. We would not have got any profit from our bees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
