Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Primitive Baptist, Vol. 8: August 26, 1843 This life and this light not only produces conviction for sin, but an honest and open confession of all sin without reserve; and although the sinner does try to hide his re Iigion and his feelings from men, yet this 51111 Opens all his crimes in honest, hum ble, and sincere confession ofall his sins to God; for now by this light of the Spirit, he sees and believes God is looking in his heart and on all his actions; yea, he believes God sees all his past sins and he sees them too, and that he must account to God for them. This man is no hypocrite, he don't; do what he does to be seen of men; he is not blind neither like the Pharisee, who had no light to see how sinful he was, but thanked God he was better than the public ao but this man, being illuminated by God's Spirit, sees his sins himself, God's holiness, God's law and justice and truth; yea, he sees himself a great sinner, and that it has been and only is God's mercy that kept him out of hell. Thus by life ant light being conveyed into his soul, by the Spirit of God, he is convicted for his sins; he being convicted and self condem ned confesses his sins, and fearing the wrath offiod and hell under a sense of, and a heart feeling anguish of his sins, is led to repentance for his sins, which repentance isa turning from all and every actual sin without reserve, while the Spirit carries on in his heart a turning of the principles, or faculties of his soul from sin, by changing the desires, and incli nations of the soul, so as to turn the n against sin. The love of sin the relish and desire to sin; so that the sinner resolves against sin, promises God against sin, prays to be kept from sin, mourns over sin, his weakness to keep from sin in a word, his soul ls so turned in him by the Spirit's operation, as to hate sin, to loath sin, and to greatly weep whenever he is so unfor tunate as to fall into sin, against his best; and firmest resolutions and promises, which he has made God 'to keep from sin; yet his very falls into sin deapen' the work of repentance and godly sorrow for Sin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Hundred Years of the American Baptist Publication Society This brief story of the first century of the Publication Society has a mission of its own. It is not put forth as a substitute for the larger history, "Pioneers of Light," prepared by Dr. and Mrs. Lemuel Call Barnes and Dr. E. M. Stephenson, nor yet as a summary of that volume. Necessarily the circulation of the larger work was limited; the edition was relatively small, and was distributed within narrow circles. It was felt that a shorter history should be prepared, which could be more widely distributed, so that pastors and Sunday-school workers should have in their hands the story of the national organization which in a very peculiar sense is the pastors Society, the Sunday-school Society. For this reason the chapters of this little book were written. The author has availed himself, not only of the material presented in "Pioneers of Light" mentioned above and in the annals of the first fifty years of the Society assembled by J. Newton Brown, D. D., and published by the Society in 1856, but has searched the original records in his keeping as the Recording Secretary of the Board of Managers. The annals of the Society's first century brought together by E. M. Stephenson are incorporated here, together with the roster of names constructed by him, and published in "Pioneers of Light." The opportunity has been used to correct some errors that unfortunately existed in the lists as they were first printed.
