Book excerpt: The kitchen is heating up in this “sweet and spicy tale” of two chefs filled with simmering romance and bonus recipes (Booklist). Lumi Santana is a chef with the gift of synesthesia—she can perceive a person’s emotions by tasting their cooking. Despite being raised by a single mother who taught her that dreams and true love were silly fairy tales, she takes a chance and puts her heart—and savings—into opening a fusion restaurant in Manhattan, offering a mix of the Dominican food she grew up with and other cuisines she’s drawn culinary inspiration from. But when Lumi’s venture fails, she’s forced to take a position as a sous chef at a staid French restaurant in midtown owned by Julien Dax—a celebrated chef known for his acid tongue and brilliant smile. Lumi and Julien don’t get along, and she secretly vows never to taste his cooking. Little does she know that her resolve doesn’t stand a chance against his culinary prowess. As Julien produces one delectable dish after another, Lumi can no longer resist his creations. She isn’t prepared for the intense feelings that follow, throwing a curveball in her plan to move on as soon as possible. Plus, there’s the matter of Esme, Julien’s receptionist, who seems to always be near and watching. And as the attraction between Lumi and Julien simmers, Lumi is shaken by a tragedy that complicates not only her professional plans, but her love life . . . “This delightful debut charms the reader with its unique conflict, savory dishes, and engaging characters that warm your heart.” —Priscilla Oliveras, USA Today-bestselling author of Kiss Me, Catalina

Download or read book Bad Blood written by Lorna Sage and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whitbread Award Winner: A memoirist “conjures up her claustrophobic childhood in the small Welsh village of Hanmer with wit and unsentimental clarity” (The New York Times). The bad blood had missed a generation. You’re just like your grandfather, my mother said. Blood trickles down through every generation, seeps into every marriage. An international bestseller and winner of the Whitbread Biography Award, Bad Blood is a tragicomic memoir of one woman’s escape from a claustrophobic childhood in post–World War II Britain and the story of three generations of a family—its triumphs and its darkest secrets. With wit and a dose of self-deprecating humor, Lorna Sage’s prose brings to life a period—the 1940s and 1950s—that continues to influence and shape society in the twenty-first century. As a portrait of a family and a young girl’s place in it, Bad Blood is unsurpassed. “Her father was off fighting in World War II, her mother off in her own dreamy rerun of adolescence, so young Lorna hung onto the ‘skirts’ of her vicar grandpa, a histrionic, bitterly intelligent philanderer . . . Sage finds such delicious ironies in all the awful detail that readers can’t help but be entertained., wickedly . . . perfect book club reading.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “She lifts your spirits even as she hurts your heart.” —Daily Telegraph “Deeply affecting and beautifully written.” —People “Evocative, enthralling, often hilarious.” —Los Angeles Times “A superb memoir of a daughter of the ’50s who got knocked up, but not knocked down.” —Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s Fresh Air

Download or read book The Sage s Way written by Ray Grigg and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004-05-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With uncommon insight, The Sage's Way uses the tradition of Oriental wisdom to explore such common subjects as acceptance, patience, power, self, grace, grief and laughter. Think of its Prologue and 64 Chapters as the Eastern philosophical equivalent of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet. Each chapter is composed of a teaching and a commentary. The teachings- from a mysterious sage of Mount Shan- are concise and dense, somewhat like the enigmatic pronouncements that might come from a reclusive mystic. The commentaries- offered by Old Shu, a remarkable hunchback living a life of contented simplicity- are wonderfully sensible and wise, somewhat like our own deepest awareness when we are introspective, honest, trusting and intuitive. The Sage's Way leads readers toward an awareness that will inspire inner strength and quiet serenity. This is the best of Oriental wisdom, the essence of both Taoism and Zen presented with a grounded clarity that is both deeply challenging and elegantly simple. As such, this book is likely to become a lifetime companion, offering day-to-day guidance while providing poignant readings for special occasions. Author of internationally sold books The Tao of Relationships, The Tao of Being, The Tao of Sailing, Zen Brushpoems, The Tao of Zen, The New Lao Tzu, Ray Grigg is eminently qualified to offer this work to those who are seeking a balanced and harmonious way through the sometimes bewildering challenges of ordinary life.

It had been a place that cried out for many years while ghosts of the past walked its halls. The house had seen good and evil and screamed out for the justice that it deserved. Many had come and gone as the house waited for the rightful owner. The stone house would only permit the one who would bring beauty and happiness back to enter through its doors. Colton had dedicated his life to being a deputy. His love for his town, family, and job had cost him the love of a woman. His trust in women had made him bitter and distrustful. He wasn't willing to put his heart on the line again. A new beginning, a new future, a new lease on life. Quinn had waited for a chance to escape the trauma she had endured at the hands of her fiance, a man who she loved. In one drunken fit of rage, it was all gone. She never looked back as she fled Boston. Defiance and battles lead to hope, love, and devotion as Colton and Quinn butted heads, trying to find their way. A secret room was revealed. Would the magic return to the mountains and the land surrounding the house? And if not, how long would it last before death and despair would try to destroy it again? The Scottish clans would have to stand together to ensure their beliefs and traditions were not silenced again as their ancestors once were.

Download or read book Changing the Subject written by Srila Roy and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Changing the Subject Srila Roy maps the rapidly transforming terrain of gender and sexual politics in India under the conditions of global neoliberalism. The consequences of India’s liberalization were paradoxical: the influx of global funds for social development and NGOs signaled the co-optation and depoliticization of struggles for women’s rights, even as they amplified the visibility and vitalization of queer activism. Roy reveals the specificity of activist and NGO work around issues of gender and sexuality through a decade-long ethnography of two West Bengal organizations, one working on lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues and the other on rural women’s empowerment. Tracing changes in feminist governmentality that were entangled in transnational neoliberalism, Roy shows how historical and highly local feminist currents shaped contemporary queer and nonqueer neoliberal feminisms. The interplay between historic techniques of activist governance and queer feminist governmentality’s focus on changing the self offers a new way of knowing feminism—both as always already co-opted and as a transformative force in the world.

Book excerpt: Whispers in the Margins: A Chronicle of Memory and Mischief In the quiet corners of our lives, where the mundane meets the magical, lies a forgotten art—an art of ink and intuition. Write It Down Before You Forget It (Or Blame It on the Squirrels) invites you into this clandestine realm—a place where memory dances with mischief, and words become constellations. Imagine standing before an ancient door, its lintel adorned with cryptic symbols. As you cross that threshold, you encounter an epigraph—a whispered promise. It hints at the emotional landscape ahead, setting the tone for what lies within. Is it sad, whimsical, or mysterious? The epigraph knows. Dear reader, may you too venture forth—quill in hand—and chronicle your odyssey. For in Forget-Me-Not Hollow, every scribble is a star chart, and every memory is a treasure waiting to be found. Dear Friend, In the hustle and bustle of life, amidst the digital noise and endless to-do lists, a quiet sanctuary exists—an empty page waiting for your thoughts, dreams, and reflections. That sanctuary is your journal. Why Journal? Clarity: Pouring your thoughts onto paper untangles the knots in your mind. Suddenly, chaos becomes a roadmap. Memory Keeper: Your journal is a time capsule. Capture fleeting moments—the taste of morning coffee, the scent of rain, the laughter shared with loved ones. Emotional Release: Write about joy, frustration, heartache, or wonder. Let your emotions dance across the page. They’ll thank you for the space. Creativity Booster: Scribble, doodle, sketch. Your journal is a canvas. Your squiggles have stories even if you can’t draw a straight line. Self-Discovery: As you write, you unearth hidden gems—your quirks, fears, and secret desires. You’re both an archaeologist and poet. Tips for Starting: No Rules: Your journal is a judgment-free zone. Spelling mistakes? Scribbles? Perfect. Just write. Consistency, Not Perfection: Don’t wait for the “right” moment. Write when you’re messy, tired, or joyful. The magic lies in showing up. Morning Pages: Try Julia Cameron’s technique—three pages of stream-of-consciousness writing each morning. It’s like yoga for your mind. Gratitude Journal: List three things you’re grateful for each day. It’s a heartwarming habit. Remember: Your journal isn’t just paper; it’s a confidante, a time-travel device, and a friend who never interrupts. So grab a pen, open that blank page, and let your soul spill forth. P.S. If you ever meet a squirrel with a silver tail reading an epigraph, ask it for its favorite riddle. Squirrels are surprisingly well-read! 🌟📚🐿️
