Book The War with Mexico

    Book Details:
  • Author : Justin Harvey Smith
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 1919
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 608 pages

Download or read book The War with Mexico written by Justin Harvey Smith and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1919 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As every one understands, our conflict with Mexico has been almost entirely eclipsed by the greater wars following it. But in the field of thought mere size does not count for much; and while the number of troops and the lists of casualties give the present subject little comparative importance, it has ample grounds for claiming attention. As a territorial stake New Mexico, Arizona and California were of immense value. National honor was involved, and not a few of the Mexicans thought their national existence imperilled. Some of the diplomatic questions were of the utmost difficulty and interest. The clash of North and South, American and Mexican, produced extraordinary lights and shades, and in both countries the politics that lay behind the military operations made a dramatic and continual by-play. The military conduct of the governments-especially our own-and the behavior of our troops on foreign soil afforded instruction worthy to be pondered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Father Escalante, who was born in Treceno, Cantabria, Spain around 1750, became a Franciscan in the Convento Grande in Mexico City at the age of 17. In 1774, he came to present-day New Mexico in the Mexican province. He was first stationed at Laguna pueblo and then in January 1775 assigned as a minister to the Zuni. In June 1776, he was summoned by Fray Francisco Atanasio Dominguez, who had arrived in Santa Fe on March 22, 1776, for the expedition to California and remained in New Mexico for two years following the expedition. Father Escalante died at the age of 30 in April 1780 in Parral, Mexico, during his return journey to Mexico City for medical treatment. Author Herbert Eugene Bolton, who was well-known for his books on the Southwest and Spanish Americas, here recounts in detail the story of Father Silvestre Velez de Escalante on his expedition to the Interior Basin in 1776. Bolton also includes translations of Father Escalante’s expedition itinerary and personal journal, in which Escalante described the expeditions he went on. He also includes a translation Bernardo Miera y Pacheco’s report to the King of Spain dated October 26, 1777, as well as two maps. “This dynamic story of Father Escalante’s trek into the Great Basin, by Dr. Herbert E. Bolton, represents the results of a long lifetime of interest, writing, and exploration in Spanish activities in the great Southwest.”—Preface

Book General Alonso de Le n s Expeditions into Texas 1686 1690

Download or read book General Alonso de Le n s Expeditions into Texas 1686 1690 written by Lola Orellano Norris and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-29 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late seventeenth century, General Alonso de León led five military expeditions from northern New Spain into what is now Texas in search of French intruders who had settled on lands claimed by the Spanish crown. Lola Orellano Norris has identified sixteen manuscript copies of de León’s meticulously kept expedition diaries. These documents hold major importance for early Texas scholarship. Some of these early manuscripts have been known to historians, but never before have all sixteen manuscripts been studied. In this interdisciplinary study, Norris transcribes, translates, and analyzes the diaries from two different perspectives. The historical analysis reveals that frequent misinterpretations of the Spanish source documents have led to substantial factual errors that have persisted in historical interpretation for more than a century. General Alonso de León’s Expeditions into Texas is the first presentation of these important early documents and provides new vistas on Spanish Texas.
