Book excerpt: Torn between duty and desire, and on the brink of civil war, Zak only has one shot to get it right for all of Ishtaan and the woman who stole his heart. Callie dreamed of being whisked away from her rat-infested apartment and the mountain of debt due to failed fertility treatments her ex left her with, but waking up on an alien spaceship a million miles from Earth was not the improvement she was hoping for. Discovering that she was one of six other female captives taken to repopulate a dying alien civilization did not make it better. But finding out she was expected to mate with the towering, silver-hued alien was the final straw. First Prince Zakaarir was out of choices. His sire's greedy ambitions brought their world to the brink of starvation and started an interplanetary war that nearly destroyed their people. Their females were dying of a genetic disease, and bringing in replacements from another world was a last desperate attempt to save all Ishtaans from extinction. All he needed was to make one his Queen so he could claim his title and save his people from another war. Beautiful, smart, and far too independent for her own good, Callie was the last thing he expected, and the worst thing that could happen as Callie couldn't give him the young he so desperately needed. In a last desperate race against time when the unthinkable happened and his sire committed the ultimate betrayal putting Callie's life in danger, Zak knew he would be forced to choose between the woman he was coming to love... And the people he was sworn to protect.

Download or read book Brown s Battleground written by Jill Ogline Titus and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-12-05 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, Prince Edward County, Virginia, home to one of the five cases combined by the Court under Brown, abolished its public school system rather than integrate. Jill Titus situates the crisis in Prince Edward County within the seismic changes brought by Brown and Virginia's decision to resist desegregation. While school districts across the South temporarily closed a building here or there to block a specific desegregation order, only in Prince Edward did local authorities abandon public education entirely--and with every intention of permanence. When the public schools finally reopened after five years of struggle--under direct order of the Supreme Court--county authorities employed every weapon in their arsenal to ensure that the newly reopened system remained segregated, impoverished, and academically substandard. Intertwining educational and children's history with the history of the black freedom struggle, Titus draws on little-known archival sources and new interviews to reveal the ways that ordinary people, black and white, battled, and continue to battle, over the role of public education in the United States.

Book excerpt: A Winnipeg Free Press Top Read of 2021 What if David Bowie really was holding the fabric of the universe together? The death of David Bowie in January 2016 was a bad start to a year that got a lot worse: war in Syria, the Zika virus, terrorist attacks in Brussels and Nice, the Brexit vote—and the election of Donald Trump. The end-of-year wraps declared 2016 “the worst … ever.” Four even more troubling years later, the question of our apocalypse had devolved into a tired social media cliché. But when COVID-19 hit, journalist and professor of public policy Andrew Potter started to wonder: what if The End isn’t one big event, but a long series of smaller ones? In On Decline, Potter surveys the current problems and likely future of Western civilization (spoiler: it’s not great). Economic stagnation and the slowing of scientific innovation. Falling birth rates and environmental degradation. The devastating effects of cultural nostalgia and the havoc wreaked by social media on public discourse. Most acutely, the various failures of Western governments in their responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. If the legacy of the Enlightenment and its virtues—reason, logic, science, evidence—has run its course, how and why has it happened? And where do we go from here?

Book excerpt: His presence gives me a sense of dread. All of the shadows turn what would be their heads to look at him as they take flight to his lead, following him like a king, but he is not the King. He is the evil invader. Before me, the land seems to go on. Cities of wealth with food piled high into the sky. Everything is enveloped in flashing blue light. Abruptly, a horrendous vision blazes over top of the seeming illusions of beauty. Everything swiftly explodes into mounds of rotted garbage, decaying and destroyed. Everything is dead. The food is putrefied and decomposed. The evil invader is no longer beautiful and full of glory. He is left broken, horrid, and more horrific than any nightmare I have ever seen. I can taste the scream of horror in my mouth. My breath is caught within my chest. I feel like I am suffocating. I cannot make a sound. Ringing echoes loudly in my ears. I hear screaming. I hear moaning. I hear anguish, and I am trapped!
