THE THEOEY OF AGKICULTUKE. LESSON I. INFLUENCE OF CLIMATE, ETC. ON AGRICULTURE. 1. Agriculture is the art of cultivating land, and its object is to make it produce the largest and most valuable crops, at the least cost, and with the least possible injury to it. 2. This object is attainable only by a combination of science with practical knowledge. Agriculture may therefore be studied under the heads, "The Theory," "The Science," and " The Practice of Agriculture." 3. Ireland, owing, in some degree, probably, to her advanced western position in the Atlantic, possesses a mild but damp and variable climate, better adapted to the growth of root and green crops, as they are called--such as turnips, beet, carrots, cabbage, and clover, all of which are found growing in their original wild state on our shores and in our fields--than to the finer kinds of grain, the produce of the cereal grasses (corn), which have been introduced from countries enjoying a much greater degree of summer heat. 4. The effect of climate on the production of farm crops is influenced by a variety of circumstances, such as elevation, exposure, aspect, the nature of the soil, and cultivation. The higher we ascend above the sea level, the more rarified the air becomes, and the more the effect of the reflection of surrounding bodies in producing heat is diminished; cold increases, until, at an elevation of about one thousand feet--more or less, in proportion to the degree of shelter afforded by higher ground, and to the dryness of the soil and subsoil--the cultivation of corn ceases to be profitable. 5. It is estimated that in the British isles every increase of elevation, amounting to sixty yards, has an effect on the growth and ripening of crops equal to an...
