Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agreement Between Science and Religion But we cannot change or amend the government of the universe. Often we raise our puny arms in protest against pain, bereavement or misfortune, but we make no impression upon the cosmic order. We have produced no army strong enough, no conqueror great enough to change in the slightest degree a law of Nature. We hunger to comprehend the government of the universe, to know whether its ways are really just or unjust, what our relations are to it, and what ground we have for hope or fear from this stem, mysterious and unchanging power which enfolds us. Every religious cult, from the lowest to the highest, has had one central motive - the explanation of the government of the universe. Science, in its higher reaches, seeks to solve precisely the same problem. Religion would explain the relations of the individual soul to the government of the universe. Science would explain the relations of all truth to the supreme adjustment. It shall be my task to inquire concerning the results of these two investigations - one religious and the other scientific - of the government of the universe, and to ascertain whether there exists any agreement between them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible, Science, and Faith This being the case, the man of science is not only thoroughly untrammelled in his work, but he has absolutely nothing to apprehend, so far as his faith is concerned, from the most searching and the most pro found investigations which may be instituted in any of the manifold departments of historical or scientific research and criticism. On the contrary, he welcomes every genuine contribution to science as a precious addition to the already vast store of knowledge, and he encourages the most thorough investigation in every line of human inquiry as something which is sure to issue in results which shall not only be of value to science, but which shall also be of priceless worth in illustrating and corroborating the truths of faith as well. Download or read book Twelve Lectures on the Connexion Between Science and Revealed Religion written by Nicholas Patrick Wiseman and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Lectures on the Connexion Between Science and Revealed Religion: Delivered in Rome In the following Lectures, the reader will hardly fail to observe a certain want of harmony between the different parts; and I know not how I can better apologize for it, than by briefly stating the manner and occasion of their composition. They were first drawn up for private instruction, and read by me in the English College at Rome, over which I had the happiness of presiding; being intended for an introductory course to the study of theology. At the request of several friends, I was induced to deliver them to a public audience; and, during the Lent of 1835, they were read to a large and select attendance, in the apartments of His Eminence Cardinal Weld. It will be easily understood how many modifications were requisite for the second delivery; particularly as I pledged myself in my prospectus to simplify my subjects, so far as to make them intelligible to persons who had no previous acquaintance with them.
