Book Successful African American Men

Download or read book Successful African American Men written by Sandra Taylor Griffin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-03-31 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics emphasize that one out of every five men is incarcerated. The background experiences of dysfunctional black men are often explored while few studies focus on the motivating triggers for high achieving black men. Successful African American Men: From Childhood to Adulthood is a unique study of the nurturing behavioral settings that high achieving black men used as adolescents and examines whether social capital played a role in helping them negotiate their way out of disadvantage. Equally important, is how these settings accommodated the men's diversity, complexity, and the influence of black culture, and reconciled it to their ability to respond and cope with mainstream America. This volume will be of interest to psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists and others interested in the rich diversity of experience found within communities of color.

New Visions of Collective Achievement graciously offers each of us, as stakeholders, a most precious gift: a theoretical and practical framework to effect real, meaningful, and long-lasting change if we are courageous enough to take heed. “This refreshingly clear and focused book presents a comprehensive discussion on the schooling experiences of African American males across generations. This invaluable resource should be required reading for all educators who work with this population to show the value of education in the African American community.” – Chance W. Lewis, Ph.D. Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor of Urban Education, UNC Charlotte “New Visions of Collective Achievement provides educators with an important insight into the ways Black males experience their education across time. Through groundbreaking research presented in the voices of three generations of Black males, this book commands attention and calls for multiple stakeholders in our schools and communities to work together to cultivate and advance the social and academic well-being of Black males.” – Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of English Education, Teachers College, Columbia University “New Visions encapsulates the spirit of African American males who are separated by generations, yet bound by a collective struggle against social injustice and a desire for success. Dr. Hucks invokes a reverence for historical oppression, an awareness of present day opportunities and barriers, and a visionary path for future generations of Black men.” – Ivory A. Book The State of the African American Male

Download or read book The State of the African American Male written by Eboni M. Zamani-Gallaher and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The circumstances affecting many African American males in schools and society remain complex and problematic. In spite of modest gains in school achievement and graduation rates, conditions that impede the progress of African American males persist: high rates of school violence and suspensions, overrepresentation in special education classes, poor access to higher education, high incidence of crime and incarceration, gender and masculine identity issues, and HIV/AIDS and other health crises. The essays gathered here focus on these issues as they exist for males in grades K-12 and postsecondary education in Michigan. However, the authors intend their analyses and policy recommendations to apply to African American males nationally. Although it recognizes the current difficulties of this population overall, this is an optimistic volume, with a goal of creating policies and norms that help African American males achieve their educational and social potential. In this era of widespread change for all members of American society-regardless of race-this book is a must-read for educators and policymakers alike.
